few times. They were both drop-dead gorgeous. But there was something very off about them. And it was in their aura’s that reminded me of ours. Off balance, shifted. It happened when you were of the supernatural. Which meant that they were not human.

Miranda squeezed my arm. “This is not good.”

I nodded. “Couldn’t have said it better myself.”

Chapter 3

For the better part of the night I mostly danced. I loved to dance. It was one of my most favorite things to do. Whenever I went to a party, the dance floor was my hangout spot. My hips swayed with the music naturally, my arms reaching up to the ceiling and moving with everyone else. Many boys moved next to me and placed their hands on my hips. I danced with them for a while, but then moved as a solo or dance with Miranda. She wasn’t the best at it, and usually just copied what I did.

I saw the strange girl on the floor, laughing and dancing. She seemed to be having a good time, but I didn’t see the boy anywhere. Maybe he left. A set of hands rested on my sides. Another boy. I almost sighed. It was getting tiring, nearing midnight. I usually didn’t stay up this late. I turned anyway, smiling flirtatiously. I moved with the beat, and the person holding onto me moved very well. I looked up, laughing. My blood ran cold when I caught sight of who it was, the laugh dying away.

“Hello”, the odd boy said in a sweet, sultry voice.

His voice drew you in, just like his eyes, inviting you to come further. I suddenly felt dazed. Shaking my head, I looked away from him, trying to avoid his eyes.

“Hi.” I got out.

He laughed, his hands still on my hips, pulling me closer until I was nearly up against him. I squirmed uncomfortably.

“We dance well together.” The boy murmured, his lips close to my ear.

I shivered. “Yeah.”

He chuckled lightly again. His laugh was carefree, soft. He was pretty charming.

“I never did get to know your name.” He said.

“Jordan.”

He smiled. “Hello, Jordan. I’m Chris.”

I forced a smile. “Nice to meet you.”

He laughed. I must’ve been hilarious. But his smile faded quickly, and he was quiet then. He twirled me on the dance floor just in time for a slow song to begin to play. Chris smiled.

“I love your costume.” He said, reminding me that I was wearing one.

The entire outfit was black, a tight corset, tied with ribbon. The mini skirt I had on barely skimmed my thighs. I also wore fishnet tights and strappy high heels. I had died streaks of red in my dark hair, which was nearly black. I loved the outfit because it was fairly dark, and sinister. It represented Halloween nicely. I had to admit, I liked Chris’s costume too. The gothic look suited him.

“Yours is very nice.”

“Thank you.” He rested his hands on my waist, my hands going behind his neck.

Chris grinned, and his inviting eyes locked on mine. They were gorgeous, but they seemed darker than before.

I never really was fond of my eyes. They were green, very green. When I was happy, my eyes were like emeralds. But when I was angry or upset, they were very dark, so dark you would think my eyes were hazel. Chris’s eyes were so beautiful, so stunning, I felt I was drowning in the now nearly black depths with dots of gold, like stars.

While his eyes were enticing, now they seemed to be intimidating. They narrowed and darkened. They were not a warm brown anymore, they were now black as pitch. He was sucking me in with his hypnotic eyes.

My magic. I had to find it. But first, I had to break away. I rested my head on his shoulder and shut my eyes. At first, my head spun, like when you got off a terribly dipping roller coaster, and you were now so tipsy you felt you could not stay on your feet. I felt I would either throw up or pass out. I gripped my wrist in my hands behind Chris’s neck, my nails digging into my skin. The small prick brought me out of the dizzying state, but I worried that if I looked, or even talked to Chris that I would be placed under his spell again.

A hand touched my shoulder. “Jordan? Are you okay?”

I jumped slightly under the touch. I looked up and a wave of relief washed over me. Miranda scowled as she eyed Chris.

“You okay?” She asked again.

I nodded, however my eyes said, get me the hell out of here. Miranda’s eyes widened and she gripped my arm, pulling me away from Chris.

“Um, you know, there are some kids screwing around in the game room. One of them passed out. Jordan, do you think you could come and help them out?”

I nodded, breaking away from Chris. He seemed disappointed, if not even a bit angry at Miranda. His eyes had not returned to their normal golden brown. They reminded me of snake eyes.

“Sorry”, I apologized, even though I was not sorry at all. I was glad to get out of his scarily strong arms. “I’ll see you later.”

Chris did not speak. Instead, he moved away from us and left through the front door, letting it slam shut behind him. The girl he had come with had not noticed his departure. She continued to dance, swinging her hips rapidly back and forth with the music.

I turned to Miranda and sighed gratefully. “Thanks for the save. I owe you.”

She nodded. “Who was that guy?”

I shrugged. “He said his name was Chris. I have no idea who he is though.”

I had never seen him at Ocean View High before. And our school was one of the best in California. I don’t know why I would’ve expected Chris to be going there, the best of the best did, and he and his friend just seemed to fit there.

“Hey”, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I spun around to see Kylie clinging to her boyfriend Keith.

“Who was the guy you were dancing with?” She asked. However I knew she did not care, she was just digging for gossip.

I sneered. “It doesn’t matter.”

She shrugged and moved away, but I knew she would be back later. The sudden appearance and disappearance of the two teens had really upset me, and I could tell it had done the same to Miranda. I knew it would be hard to convince her to use magic to deal with the situation. Of course, we’re allowed to use magic, it was natural for the supernatural to use their magic, but create trouble, or one misstep, then you will be punished. The Elders who are in charge of magical beings and who are the ultimate magic creatures, would kill you. You would be executed for exposing our kind to the world.

Miranda was terrified of the Elders, as well as you should be, however I was not. It would be next to impossible for me to have her and I perform magic. I, on the other hand, had no problem risking it all and using my magic. I had gotten away with a few testy spells before, not that the Elders didn’t find out. I could use my own magic to find out about Chris and this girl. It would be worth a scolding from Miranda. Magic was just more powerful when it wasn’t one person. But, I did not need Miranda. She eyed me curiously, as if she could tell what I was thinking.

“We can’t risk it.” She murmured. Maybe she could tell what I was thinking.

“I don’t need your help.”

Her eyes softened and she placed her hand on my arm. “I just don’t want you to get into trouble. You’ve already tested the Elders’ patience. Why push it?”

I scowled. It is true, I had gotten into trouble before. But to me, magic, it was worth it. I shook off Miranda’s hand. “I can take care of myself. If you’re afraid.”

Her brown eyes narrowed. One thing she did not like was being called a coward. And if someone said she was scared or afraid, then to her, it was like an insult. “I’m not afraid. If you want to stir up some magical mischief, I’m in.”
