Kota stood up from his desk and headed for the door, but Johnson stood in his way, blocking his only escape route. “Never bring that toy, here again, you hear me? And change that dumb outfit. You’re supposed to be following the Evergreen Code of Conduct. Change into appropriate attire.” She chastised him. “Go!”
Johnson moved to the side, letting Kota escape from her grip. He walked to his third class of the day with his head down, being pushed, shoved, and jostled around in the heavy traffic. He took a wrong turn and remained stuck in the rectangular luck but by luck, he landed in front of his next class.
Kota sneaked into the room, his eyes glued to the floor. He glanced up only to look for open seats but quickly raised his head when he heard a familiar voice ring out. “Kota?” The voice asked. He looked up and noticed it was Alyssa. She stared at him with a big grin on her face. She waved him over, pointing at the empty seat next to her. He nodded his head, approaching the empty seat and sitting down. She sat down next to him.
“How have your first two classes gone?” She asked him. “Was trigonometry any good?”
Kota shrugged his shoulders. “... Okay.”
Alyssa tilted her head. “Okay? Kota, what happened?”
Kota shook his head. “I’m okay.”
“You sure?” She asked him.
He nodded, staring into her blue eyes. “Yes.”
Alyssa nodded. “Okay, I’m just asking. Plus… you haven’t taken out Teddy. You always do that.”
“Uh… I-” Kota was interrupted by the bell blaring. He shifted his attention away from Alyssa to his third-period teacher. Alyssa stared at him, shaking her head before turning her attention to the teacher.
“Good morning, students. My name is Jake Winchester, your Chemistry teacher. Today we’ll begin…” Kota began tuning him out, being teleported back to his fantasy world which Alyssa noticed instantly too. Strangely, Winchester picked up on this too but decided to not call him out for his lack of attention.
As class dragged on, Kota remained in his fantasy world, not noticing a familiar classmate some columns away from him. His deskmate from his first period glanced in his direction, recognizing him. It’s the weird kid. I feel bad for the girl next to him. She thought to herself before continuing to build up her sketch of the family. The child was now broken and bruised.
The fifty minutes that comprised a period, or, in other terms, a class, ended faster than most students expect. They were released, headed to their fourth period. The girl from first period left before Kota and Alyssa, going to her next class.
Kota and Alyssa, meanwhile, began preparations to head to their next class, which happened to be the same class. However, on their way out, Winchester called Kota over. Alyssa remained behind, standing by the door for him.
Kota approached Winchester, rubbing his thumb against his palm as he neared the teacher. “Yes… sir?”
“Are you okay, Kota? I noticed you were spacing out, is there anything I can do to help you? Is there anything I can do to keep your attention?”
“I… I don’t know.” Kota responded, hesitant to remain any longer in the room.
Winchester nodded. “Then that’s okay, Kota, sorry to bother you. You can go to your next class, have a good day.”
Kota nodded before turning away and heading to the door where Alyssa waited for him. As he approached the door, he glanced behind him at Winchester.
“... Can I have a good day?”
