"You said she dated someone else," John said from my right.
"Yeah," I said, not really paying attention.
"Was it Danny Gray?" I felt a jolt of energy surge through my brain. John knew about him? why hadn't he ever told me?
"Yes, yes it was," I said, more interested, "how did you know?"
John turned his head. It appeared as though he did not want to answer my question. It was especially odd because he brought up the topic himself.
"Okay," John started, "I'm going to tell you something, but you can't get mad."
"Just tell me already."
"She dated Danny last year. She wanted to keep everything under wraps, so she only told a couple of people, Audrey and I included," he said, "look, I don't know why she didn't tell anyone else, but, they broke up within a month or two."
"How did I not know about this?" I asked.
"Well, you weren't exactly talking to any of us at the time. You were so caught up with basketball," he said simply, "and, we understood that it was important to you," he added when he saw my face, "she told us not to say anything, and at first we didn't know why. But, now it makes sense, she didn't want to tell you because you were probably under the impression that you two were gonna get back together."
My mouth slacked. In fact, I could feel my whole body go numb. I sat down on the curb right before the crosswalk light turned green. A quo of people walked in front of me, bumping my sides. I didn't care, all I could think about was what John just told me.
Once the people crossed the street and the light turned red again, John sat down beside me. He put an arm around my shoulder and patted me on the back.
"I'm sorry man," he said, "but maybe it's time you got over her . . ."
"But, you just told me that this was the reason we were on this trip, I have to get her back."
"I know, I know . . . and I'm sorry, but, I don't think Emily feels the same way."
John was right. I couldn't deny it. If Emily didn't have the decency to tell me things were over, then she wasn't worth my time. She wanted to lead me on, she wanted to make me feel like I still had a shot. She was playing games with my head, and quite frankly, I was done playing.
