From that early time I began to be impressed with my father's character, as compared with other men. Every member of the household respected, revered and loved him as a matter of course, but it began to dawn on me that every one else with whom I was thrown held him high in their regard. At forty-five years of age he was active, strong, and as handsome as he had ever been. I never remember his being ill. I presume he was indisposed at times; but no impressions of that kind remain. He was always bright and gay with us little folk, romping, playing, and joking with us. With the older children, he was just as companionable, and the have seen him join my elder brothers and their friends when they would try their powers at a high jump put up in our yard. The wholeof his career, from childhood to manhood, was, 'According to thecourse of this world, according to the prince of the power of theair, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience'(Eph 2:2).

The practicabilityof every reform is determined absolutely and always by "thecircumstances of the case," and only those who put themselves intothe midst of affairs, either by action or by observation, can knownwhat those circumstances are or perceive what they signify. Nostatesman dreams of doing whatever he pleases; he knows that it doesnot follow that because a point of morals or of policy is obvious tohim it will be obvious to the nation, or even to his own friends;and it is the strength of a democratic polity that there are so manyminds to be consulted and brought to agreement, and that nothing canbe wisely done for which the thought, and a good deal more than thethought, of the country, its sentiment and its purpose, have notbeen prepared. Social reform is a matter of cooperation, and if itbe of a novel kind, requires an infinite deal of converting to bringthe efficient majority to believe in it and support it. Withouttheir agreement and support it is impossible.

But that is not the question now. It is conspired against; and wehave given a few proofs of the conspiracy, as they shine out ofvarious classes engaged in it. An indictment against the wholemanufacturing interest need not be longer, surely, than theindictment in the case of the Crown against O'Connell and others.Mr. Cobden may be taken as its representative--as indeed he is, byone consent already. There may be no evidence; but that is notrequired. A judge and jury are all that is needed. And theGovernment know where to find them, or they gain experience tolittle purpose.

I was considering with my self, what I had written concerning the Progress of the Pilgrim from this World to Glory; and how it had been acceptable to many in this Nation: It came again into my mind to write, as then, of him that was going to Heaven, so now, of the Life and Death of the Ungodly, and of their travel from this world to Hell. The which in this I have done, and have put it, as thou seest, under the Name and Title of Mr. Badman, a Name very proper for such a Subject: I have also put it into t

s valuable because it clearly shows what really is the origin of the idea of Space. It proves that the idea of Space is a representation of one condition of our Activity. It is because the primary work of Thought is to represent the forms of our dynamic Activity that we find the idea of Space so necessary and fundamental.

But it will perhaps be argued that our ordinary sensations carry with them a spatial meaning and implication, and that indirectly, therefore, our sensations do supply us with the idea of Space. It will readily be agreed that if this is so of any sensations it is pre-eminently true of the sensations of vision and touch. Indeed, it will perhaps not be disputed that the ordinary vident man derives from the sensations of vision his most common spatial conceptions. We propose, therefore, to inquire very briefly how the character of spatial extension becomes associated with the data of Vision.

The objects of Vision appear to be displayed before us in immense multitude, each

edwells rather oftener in alleys and by-ways than she does in courtsand palaces, and that it is good, and pleasant, and profitable totrack her out, and follow her. I believe that to lay one's handupon some of those rejected ones whom the world has too longforgotten, and too often misused, and to say to the proudest andmost thoughtless--"These creatures have the same elements andcapacities of goodness as yourselves, they are moulded in the sameform, and made of the same clay; and though ten times worse thanyou, may, in having retained anything of their original natureamidst the trials and distresses of their condition, be really tentimes better;" I believe that to do this is to pursue a worthy andnot useless vocation. Gentlemen, that you think so too, yourfervent greeting sufficiently assures me. That this feeling isalive in the Old World as well as in the New, no man should knowbetter than I--I, who have found such wide and ready sympathy in myown dear land. That in expressing it, we are b

inctive and inexplicable elements: a power deeper and more marvellous in its inscrutable ramifications than human consciousness. 'What on earth,' we say, 'could So-and-so see in So-and-so to fall in love with?' This very inexplicability I take to be the sign and seal of a profound importance. An instinct so conditioned, so curious, so vague, so unfathomable, as we may guess by analogy with all other instincts, must be Nature's guiding voice within us, speaking for the good of the human race in all future generations.

On the other hand, let us suppose for a moment (impossible supposition!) that mankind could conceivably divest itself of 'these foolish ideas about love and the tastes of young people,' and could hand over the choice of partners for life to a committee of anthropologists, presided over by Sir George Campbell. Would the committee manage things, I wonder, very much better than the Creator has managed them? Where would they obtain that intimate knowledge of individual structures and functions

Rome, too, left the world a rich inheritance. Through the vicissitudes of history her laws and ordered government have stood a majestic object-lesson for the ages. But when the stern, frugal character of her people ceased to be the bone and sinew of her civilization, Rome fell.

Then came the new nations of the North and founded a more permanent society. The base of Greek and Roman society was the slave, crushed into the condition of the wretches who "labored, foredone, in the field and at the workshop, like haltered horses, if blind, so much the quieter." The base of the new society was the freeman who fought, tilled, judged and grew from more to more.
