She had no idea why sheâd kept Kazimir to herself, as if he was something to hide.

Bobby didnât think things could get any stranger, until he woke up that morning to find a green man looming over him.
âWhatthafoo,â he yelped, scrambling feverishly with his duvet as the green man drifted away from him, his curious expression unchanged. He was tall, with long dark hair, but what stuck out most was the suit of medieval armour he wore. Worse, what looked like a wooden stake poked out of his chest.
As Bobby sat bolt upright, he realised the stranger was not only translucent, but floating several inches above the ground. That, combined with the green tinge to his skin, made one word crash through his mind. Ghost!
His suspicions were confirmed as the armoured man moaned faintly before gliding out of Bobbyâs room by simply melting into the wall.
âTell me that didnât just happen,â he mumbled to himself, exhausted by all the madness heâd seen since setting foot in Dawnvel.

Heâd spent a couple of hours googling druids on his phone before heâd fallen into a restless sleep. Heâd read some articles that described druids as a peaceful people in tune with nature and animals, but other articles depicting them as an evil cult who took part in human sacrifice.
Bobby hastily got dressed and unlocked his door, jumping once again as he found Mo leaning against the wall waiting for him, apparently filing down his nails to pass the time.
âDonât mind Vlad,â said Mo.
âYou what?â
âThe ghost that just passed through here.â Mo grinned widely.
âSo he was a ghost?â
âHe is now, yeah. Was a vamp before that. Old Vlad doesnât know heâs dead.
Still tries to suck on peopleâs necks when they sleep. Most people just feel a slight breeze or nothing at all. If he annoys you, just fling some garlic at him.â
âAnd the ghosts canât hurt us?â
âNot these kind,â Mo replied. âLots of others, sure, but Vlad the Lad and Dawnvelâs other permanent ghosts arenât gonna hurt or possess anyone.â
âApart from the phantom neck biting?â
Mo shrugged. âThe animal ghosts come in handy sometimes. We can communicate with them better.â
âThereâs animal ghosts?â

âOf course, why would humans be the only ones whose spirits remain?â Mo looked over to the empty bed across the room. âHey, whereâs your roommate?â
He shrugged. âNo idea. Heâs hardly ever here. Freddy usually rolls in hours after curfew.â
âHmm, very interesting.â Mo twirled an imaginary goatee. âMy spider senses are tingling. What you need to learn around here Bobby is that everyoneâs potentially up to something. This Freddy could be a gorgon or even a mermaid in disguise for all you know.â
âWell, I didnât see a tail, but I suppose he could be hiding one.â They shared a grin.
Mo assured Bobby as they got ready to leave that only one in a hundred poor sods became ghosts after death, and that was usually because they had unfinished business.
âAnd thereâs vampire ghosts?â
âJust one at Dawnvel. All the others were mortal before.â
âOthers?â Bobby asked, locking his door behind him, not that it would stop Vlad from gliding back in again.
âCourse. This place is full of them.â
âHow come I havenât seen one in Dawnvel before now?â
âYour powers are burgeoning,â said Mo, continuing to casually file his fingernails. âIâm guessing it started when you first saw that Shade on your way here. Every day youâre getting stronger, until one day the sorcery makes you go

off like a bomb, killing you and maybe innocent bystanders nearby. Unless you complete the Joining of course.â
âWhat! I might explode? You left that part out last night.â
âDid we? Oops,â Mo sniggered. âDonât worry, youâll be fine as long as we do the Joining.â
âYou know this is like, emotional blackmail or something,â Bobby said as they walked through the building.
âHey man, itâs just the unfortunate truth.â
âWhat were you doing outside my room anyway, stalker? Please tell me you werenât there all night.â
âNaa, youâre not that important.â Mo chuckled. âI arrived about ten minutes ago. Simone ordered me to check you hadnât skipped town. Sheâs deemed you a flight risk.â
Bobby couldnât deny heâd thought about it. Heâd spent half the night making plan after plan of how he could get out of all this.
âYou like her, donât you?â
âWh-what do you mean?â Bobby spluttered.
âI saw the way you looked at her, completely enamoured.â
âI was not. I mean, sheâs beautiful, everyone can see that. But so are Lana and Niamh, as well as a load of other girls here.â
âA fair few guys too,â Mo added. âMaybe itâs something in Dawnvelâs water, eh.â
113
âWhat, like a spell?â
âNo, I was joking.â Mo said. âI donât think itâs possible to magic yourself pretty. Illusions are only temporary, otherwise Iâd spell myself gorgeous daily.â
âSo, I really donât have a choice with this druid nonsense?â Bobby asked as they left the dormitories and set off through campus.
âNot with the Joining Iâm afraid. You could willingly give up your magic though, if youâre dead-set on not being a druid.â
âReally, then I can do that, canât I.â
Mo nodded grimly. âItâs possible, but not recommended.â
They passed by the Perfects house now, where Dreg was hanging out of the window, his arm flung out. Bobbyâs mouth fell open as the raven swooped down from the clouds to land on Dregâs arm before he disappeared back through the window.
âThatâll be the guild replying to us,â Mo explained. âDreg sent them the raven last night.â
âWhat like with a scroll attached to the birdâs leg.â
âYep.â Mo chuckled. âYouâd think a phone would be easier, but the Elders are sticklers for tradition. Soâs Dreg actually, the guy doesnât own a phone or even a TV. I donât think heâs ever been on the internet.â
âHeâs a bit moreâŠdruidy than the rest of you, isnât he?â
âDefinitely,â Mo replied. âItâs probably because of who his family are. The rest of us are relatively normal, promise.â
114
âWait, where are we going?â Bobby realised Mo was leading him to the cafeteria.
âYou get to sit at the âPerfectsâ table now.â Mo grinned. âOther than that, itâs a regular school day. Try to act like thereâs nothing out of the ordinary going on.â
He opened his mouth wordlessly. How could Mo expect him to act like last night hadnât happened? âYou think Iâll be able to focus on mathematical equations this morning?â
âWell, the clanâs got to maintain secrecy, havenât we?â
Before Bobby could reply, he got distracted by a rabbit hopping through a stone wall. He guessed Mo hadnât been joking about animal ghosts. Bobby would have to double-check every animal he saw was opaque or not from now on.
They entered the cafeteria, greeted by the smells of cooked porridge and bacon as Mo led him to the Perfects table. Bobby received more than a few curious glances as people saw him hanging with the elite gang.
The rest of the clan, other than Dreg, huddled together at the end of one of the long tables. As usual, no other students were seated anywhere near them.
Theyâd all been talking in hushed tones, apart from Niamh, who spooned her porridge silently, without eating any.

âIâm telling you, a Legionnaire is to blame,â Warren declared as he and Mo sat beside them. He cut off to glare at Bobby. âWhyâs he here again? He isnât even one of us yet.â
âHe will be after the Joining,â said Simone.
âIf he passes, which I find highly unlikely,â Lana added.
âIâm just glad you didnât try to run again.â Simone bestowed him with a brilliant smile, her grey eyes twinkling. Bobby felt his chest flutter.
He decided to ignore Warren and Lanaâs jibes and asked. âLegionnaire? Isnât that what you accused me of last night?â
âItâs the name of those who hunt druids.â Warren scowled. âTheir order has been around since Roman times, and they still practice the tradition.â
âOh yeah, because Legionnaire is what Roman solders were called,â he said.
âWell done, you know basic history.â Lana applauded sarcastically.
Simone shook her head. âLegionnaires arenât to blame for Zander. I told you before, there were signs of dark magic.â She looked at Niamh guiltily. âBut I wonât go into details.â
âItâs okay,â Niamh mumbled. âYou donât have to wrap me in cotton wool. I know none of us have been ready to question you yet, but please, you and Dreg were there just after those two girls found his bodâŠfound Zander. What was it you saw?â
Simone took a deep breath, as if she didnât want to talk about this at all.
Bobby didnât blame her.
116
âZanderâs flesh was grey and his veins had gone red, clear signs of dark magic. Thereâd also been a black line at his throat. Whatever dark spell was cast on him itâŠsuffocated him to death.â She struggled through a sob. âIâm so sorry Niamh. I wanted you to believe he died peacefully.â
Bobby was shocked to see Niamh didnât appear close to tears, but stared stonily into space instead. âItâs okay, Sim. There is no peaceful way to go once dark magic is involved. Itâs not your fault.â
An uncomfortable silence followed, until Mo said. âAt least we have a strong lead to go on, so we can catch whatever scum did this.â
âYouâŠyouâre going after Zanderâs killer?â he whispered.
âOf course,â Warren snapped. âYou think weâd let anyone get away with this? He was one of us. Iâm gonna kill whoever did this myself and make it as painful as possible.â Warrenâs massive arms trembled as he clutched his fists.
Bobby just nodded, scared to ask anything more.
âWe know Legionnaires arenât above using tools of dark sorcery to achieve their goals,â Lana insisted. âItâs still possible the hunters are behind it.â
âListen,â said Simone. âI want justice for Zander as much as anyone. But we have a more imminent threat with this new coven in town.â
âNothingâs more important than Zander,â Warren shot back.
Bobby couldnât fail to notice the tension between the two of them, so many things left unspoken whenever their gazes met.
117
âI didnât say that,â said Simone, looking away from Warren. âBut we canât let them ambush us again. You said yourself it was a larger coven than normal, and probably led by someone powerful.â
âAnd youâre sure Cairnath didnât kill Zander?â Bobby summoned up the courage to ask.
âCairnath donât have magic,â Lana replied acidly, âso how could they kill Zander with dark magic? Imbecile.â
âHe was just asking,â said Simone.
âAnd Iâm just telling.â Lana crossed her arms beneath her chest. âStop defending him so much, the rest of us donât care if you want to hook up with him or something. Keep it to yourselves.â
Bobbyâs stomach clenched.
âWhatâre you talking about?â Simone frowned, evidently making her feelings toward him clear. Of course, a girl as beautiful as Simone wouldnât be interested in him. He hadnât really expected anything less.
âYeah, what are
