have had more time to have gotten to know her. Through all of his analysis of what had happened, one thing had been proven clear. He just didn’t have time to get to know the girl. Maybe they actually were soul mates, and he only had been mistaken about their attraction. So what if she didn’t fit his previous paradigm of the perfect girl. That could have been a mistake as well. Now, with his father interfering, he might never know.

Eventually the sheriff and deputies allowed Rick and his father to go. They said they had seen enough. Unfortunately, they packed up the comic books—probably to look for fingerprints. Rick didn’t think it was likely to bring up anything on their computers.

“You’ll get him to a counselor, right?” the sheriff said to Mr. Deacon before he left.

Rick’s father nodded, gazing sadly on his son. “I know a good pastor that also counsels in such circumstances.”

“Good.” The sheriff nodded, smiling. “I know it can be difficult. Those kind of groups take advantage of kids like him. It is a good thing he got away.”

Mr. Deacon nodded.

Rick and his father climbed into their hired car, and the driver drove them to the airport.

Rick was subdued when he sat in the back seat, clinging onto Mrs. Blithe’s book. Because it was dusty, the deputies hadn’t taken it from him, assuming it had always been in the vacant house and that he had imagined Mrs. Blithe. The people of Wolverton had escaped perfectly.

He opened the first page, then flipped the pages, just feeling the thin leafs of paper pass through his fingers. A sheet of folded note paper fell out.

Picking it up, Rick peeked at his father who seemed distracted by his own thoughts. Then, quietly he opened it.

Dear Rick Deacon,

I hope you find this and you are well.

Don’t seek out Wolverton again. I know you want to. You are trapped in their honey. You have been lured in by their Daisy. But please don’t find us. If I could save you from them, I would.

I wish I could have warned you about Daisy earlier. She is an expert. But I fear that is too late. I will watch after your child, if you wish. But be free. Don’t come back.

Your Best Will at Heart,

Mrs. B

Rick stared at the words.

Then his father snatched up the note.

“Hey!” Rick grabbed for it, but his father held it out of his reach, reading it.

After a while, his father handed it back, nodding. “Listen to her. She’s got it right.”

Rick growled, clutching the note then stuffed it back into the pages of the book. Sharply looking to his father, he said, “I can’t abandon my child.”

“Fine.” Mr. Deacon gazed right ahead. “As long as it is your child, I will make sure you don’t. We’ll convince the mother to move in with us—if it is your child. But we will be performing a paternity test on her child once she gives birth. You understand.”

Painfully chuckling, Rick nodded, knowing that his father would not be satisfied otherwise. Besides, maybe he was right to be suspicious. Maybe Daisy had been pregnant all along and they needed a rich man to fund the pack, so they scammed him into thinking he was the one who made her so. The Loup Garou had run a similar scam to get money from his father after all. But honestly, Rick was sure Daisy had not been pregnant when they first met. She didn’t look it. And he was positive that after their hours together, she most definitely would carry his child. However, he said, “Of course. One cannot be too careful. Wolves are wolves.”

Again, nodding, Mr. Deacon said, “Indeed.”
