happened. It’s all my fault. I sat there and listened to his stupid stories, egging him on like some blathering idiot. I encouraged him to keep on telling story after story, laughing and playing along. If he was around I’d tell him he is an old crack pot! Darris laughed a little at the memory of him and his grandfather playing “Army Captain” with metal pots on their heads. At that moment Andom and Maddy sat down next to him.
“We’re sorry Darris we know how close you two were.” Maddy put her arm around Darris as she said this.
Darris fought back a few more tears before he continued, “It’s ok, I am just going to miss him that is all.”
It was Andom’s turn to speak, “We know you didn’t mean what you said about Terras, you were just a little upset.”
Darris was very stern as he spoke, “I meant every word of it. Stories like that are dangers to everyone. They give people false hope. People need to be practical and science is the only way to be practical.”
Maddy with a scared look on her face spoke up, “Darris we know your upset, but I’ve heard lots of stories from people who have seen the Magens use their powers, the Anims, and Elgons as well.”
Andom interrupted, “Yeah, and how do you explain how our armor works. It becomes one with our body. We can feel everything the armor can.”
Darris narrowed his eyes on Andom, “I wouldn’t know. I am not the one who gets to wear the armor. That is you, you are the oldest. And as for those other stories, you said it yourself Maddy they are stories!”
Just then they heard the door shut down stairs. Darris began to sneak down to see if he could over hear the conversation. Maddy and Andom were close to his heels.
“You were supposed to go in with him,” was the strong voice of his father.
Hermus responded a moment later, “He wanted to go in alone. You know how difficult your father is.”
“That is no excuse! You were sent with him with four horses and two soldiers to protect him!”
“Would you rather me die too?”
“Do not compare your life with my father’s! I do not wish death on anyone. I just think that if you were there then….,” Harpis couldn’t finish the sentence.
“You don’t think there was an accidental fire do you? You think Gorgal killed Him!”
“I didn’t say that.”
“But you think it don’t you?”
There was a moment of silence before Harpis continued, “Do you not find it odd that Gorgal survived the fire?”
Hermus paused a moment before answering, “He said that Drute saved his life. He is honoring your father as a hero in tomorrow’s speech. He is even going to present you with a Medal of Bravery on his behalf. Surly you don’t think that your father would hesitate to save a man from a burning building…especially a man in a position such as Nitale Gorgal?”
“I just know that my father is almost never wrong when it comes to character, and he defiantly was afraid to go but knew he had to.”
“This is ridiculous! President Gorgal wouldn’t hurt a fly.”
“I am calling a council meeting tomorrow at noon.”
Hermus was thrown back at this, “For what reason?”
“Well for starters we need to vote in a new governor, and we need to discuss what happened at the castle.”
After hearing this, Darris retreated back into his room followed by Maddy and Andom. They all went back to their usual spots.
“I knew something was up with Gorgal. Grandpa was right.” Darris was excited.
Andom answered back, “You said earlier that you liked Gorgal.”
Darris shook his head, “No I said I think he looks like a nice guy. I also said that Grandpa was never wrong when it comes to judging character.”
Maddy and Andom looked at each other knowing that Darris was up to something. They both spoke at the same time, “So what are you going to do?”
Darris had a big grin on his face, “I am going to listen in on that council meeting.”
