Sarah put her elbows on her knees and moved forward, peering into her kids’ eyes.
“It doesn’t mean anything, it’s just gonna be a little more hectic around here.”
“But why?! Why couldn’t you guys just put a lid on it?!” Anna wailed, frowning intensely.
“I’ll ask you that when you find your mate and you can’t help but to jump him every time he so much as looks at you, sound like a good idea?” Sarah growled at her daughter, her wolf stirring up.
“Calm, love.” Drew said putting his hand on her knee, calming her and her wolf down. He looked to his son and raised a brow.
“Any questions? Concerns?” He asked, searching his sons’ unreadable face.
“I’m not changing any diapers, or feeding it.”
“First of all, do not address your siblings as ‘it’. Second of all, they won’t need any of your assistance, They have their kick ass mother to help them. I don’t need your help, and I sure as hell won’t ask for it. God, I’m hungry!” She growled, stood up and stormed to the kitchen. Drew rolled his eyes and rubbed his temples.
“Is she gonna be like that the whole time. Bint like and stuff.” Anna asked, crinkling her nose in her mothers direction.
“No foul language, and yes. She is.”
“I heard that you little whelp.” They said together, the twins widened their eyes and gulped.
“This is gonna be fun, eh?” Their father said, then got up to retrieve his mate.
Luna crossed her arms and looked up at the pregnant moon, sighed and put her head on her knees that had been bent. She just couldn’t figure it out, couldn’t wrap her mind around it.
“You shouldn’t think so hard,” Ander said, sidling behind her “you might get worry lines right there.” He said pointing in between her eyebrows.
“Your mate might find it gross.” He said, sitting next to her, mocking her position. They looked at each other then she laughed and shook her head.
“Why are you, anyway?”
“Why am I what?”
“Worrying. I should say what about, that would be more correct.”
“You rant a lot, just saying.” She said, looking back up to the moon.
“It’s boring isn’t it?” She crinkled her brow and looked to him, her elbow touched his.
“What is?”
“Just looking at it, waiting and watching to see if it’ll do something. If it’ll show you, somehow, why.”
“Why, what?” He confused her, but in an absolutely breathtaking way.
“Just why. Why is everything the way it is for us, why does things have to be complicated for two people and perfectly normal for everyone else.” His eyes looked to hers and she frowned.
“I wonder that a lot.” His eyes searched for something in hers.
“Something’s bothering you.” It was a statement, not a question.
“It’s just… it just seems like, most days, she just created me just to get a kick out of something. Just to get a daily laugh. And I let her. I’m the strongest being she’s ever created, save Marissa. I’m the only one who can openly defy her and not care if she rains her wrath down on me. Why do I let her drive me nuts? Can you answer that for me, Ander, why do I let her do these things to me?” She looked to him, tears making her eyes burn. In a too quick movement he wrapped one arm around her and pulled her closer. She let the tears fall and sobbed into the crook of his arm. He looked up to the moon and let out a low howl to the moon, but it was still powerful. She couldn’t howl, she knew she couldn’t, so she let his howl soothe her.
“I’m sorry love, I honestly am.” He said, kissing her forehead as more tears fell down.
“I know you are. I can’t see anything past you, and I can’t see my own. I’m so sorry Ander, I don’t know how this is gonna end. I’m probably never gonna say this again, and tomorrow I’m gonna deny all of it. I love you Ander Mascot. With everything in me, I love you. But this can’t happen, because something huge is coming and she just loves fucking with me. I’m so sorry, I don’t want it to be like this. I wanted a normal life, with a normal mate, and a normal kid. But I’m probably not gonna get any of that, that means neither are you.” She sobbed, glaring at the swollen moon. He was quiet for a while, then he grabbed her chin and slammed his lips down on hers. Neither of them knew how to kiss, they went purely on instinct, but it was enough.
“Then I say, if you’re going to deny it all, we live it up now.” She smiled, wiped her cheeks and stood.
“Race you to the creek near the boulder shaped like John Travolta’s head!” She yelled then morphed into her wolf, a deep red that reminded her of blood, and ran off. She wheezed in laughter after she heard him grumble.
“You know good and damn well I have no idea where that is.”
“What are you doing here Jake?” She asked rubbing her temples and closing her eyes.
“This was my fathers’ pack, when he died I-I had to come.” He said, taking a step and watching her extremely closely.
“I get that, Jake, I really do but why? Do you know what happened after that? Do you understand the level of pain that was in that house after you left?” She didn’t use any words that seemed too female knowing Luna Crazy-She-Bitch would start yelling and Valerie wouldn’t be able to take it.
“I had to go.”
“Why didn’t you just… take her with you. She would’ve came easily, she would’ve understood.”
“She?” The Luna said, but was easily ignored.
“I didn’t want her sucked into the messed up stupid world that I was born in to. If I could somehow save her from all the bullshit that I’m surrounded by, I’ve done my job.”
“Bullshit?” The Luna squeaked, her hackles raising.
“That wasn’t the way to do it Jake. She’s been suffering for eight years, she gets so little relief from him.” His face cleared and he walked to her, grabbing her upper arm and leaning close.
“It was a him? I’ve a son?” There was joy in his eyes and his tone as he asked.
“Yes, his name is Jake Junior, he looks exactly like you… here.” She put her hand on his cheek and pictured his son, then sent the picture to him. His eyes clouded over slightly as he looked at the photo.
“He’s… beautiful. Can you… can you show me her?” His voice cracked slightly but he didn’t seem to care. She pictured Sammy smiling, with her blue eyes alight and mischievous and sent it to him. He smiled as the picture went through his mind and let go of her arm. He stood then, wiping at a ghost tear on his face.
“How long are you staying?”
“Wait, what?! She’s staying? She can’t stay!”
“Down girl, I’m not. I just came to drop off your boy.” Valerie said, grabbing the boy from behind her and pushing him forward gently.
“Isaac? Where’d you find him?” Jake asked, taking the boys face in his hands and moving it.
“He broke into my apartment, planning to die in my bed. I came home and found him.” She said, crossing her arms loosely over her stomach.
“What do you mean planning to die?” Jake asked, his voice serious now as he sniffed the boy.
“There was an, uhm, ninja star in his leg and a gun skim on his arm. I tended them.”
“I should smell the blood though.”
“”Magic, the bandages are coated in magic, as we speak the silver is festering out and he is healing. But he feels none of it.”
“Thanks for that, again.” Isaac said, looking back at her with big hazel eyes/
“No problem Isaac. I should go now.” She said, smiling at the boy and walking towards the door. The Luna looked at her with the nastiest, meanest glare she could but Valerie couldn’t care. She wanted to go home and sleep. But something was still nagging at her.
“Where’s his father? Why hasn’t he been on the news, or put up fliers?”
“We’re wolves, Valerie, the minute we go to the news with this, or put up fliers, it’s their bounty hunters that come for us. I wasn’t going to risk his safety for his father’s wellbeing. Guess I wasn’t too good at it, huh?” Valerie said nothing, just looked to Isaac who seemed to be begging her something with those eyes that looked so much like her mates. She looked away and touched the door knob.
“Valerie,” his voice stopped her “if there’s anything you need, just let me know.” She turned around and looked into his black eyes.
“Brandons’ dead. He died about a month ago and, if I’m being honest, he disgusts me. They look nothing alike, they don’t have the same personality traits at all, but when I look at him the only thing I see is my dead mate. The only thing I need is for you to keep him away from me, and I’ll be fine.” Not once did she look at Isaac afraid of the pain that would erupt.
“But I haven’t done anything! If anything, I’ve been as nice and polite to you as I possibly could!” Isaac yelled, defending himself.
“It’s not about you doing something, per se, it’s just about you. I cannot be around you, it hurts too much. Right now… it’s just too much.” She turned and opened the door, then walked straight into a chest the size of a football field. She looked up and gulped.
“You’re the little fairy that found my pup, huh?”
Chapter 17“Time for bed guys!!” and ly yelled getting up from the couch where her and her mate rested. Cara zoomed to her mother, her brow furrowed and her head cocked.
“What do you mean? We normally go to bed at ten, it’s only eight.” Molly bit her lip and looked at Thomas, scared of how her children would take the news.
“Tomorrow you guys are going to start your first day of school.” He said standing and walking to Molly, putting a gentle touch on her waist to soothe her. All of his kids came down then, circling them and putting in their two cents about how they felt.
“We’ve never gone to school before.”
“It doesn’t make sense to go now.”
“Why do we even have to go to school?”
“What did we do to deserve this?” He shot a brief to look to Molly who made a curt whistle, cutting off all of her kids.
“Me and Sarah talked it over and agreed that it would be best if you kids got a better education, better than the tutors can give you.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. You mean that cunt bitch is going to school with us?” Luna snarled, taking a step forward.
“Luna, language.” Her mother growled staring her daughter down. They went at it for a few minutes before Luna backed down, bowing her head and taking a step back.
“It’s an excellent school, it goes from pre-k to the 12th grade, they don’t even make schools like that anymore.”
“Whoa, hold the flipping phone.” Alissa said, readjusting Libby in her arms.
“She’s coming to school with us?” Molly
