âHow could I ask her?â muttered the boy. âAfter all that has happened, could I go to her andâoh, what sort of a lame story could I tell?â
âLes femmesâthey have a wonderful genius for manufacturing crutches for stories like that.â
âYes, butâIâve been such a damned fool!â
âSo have all of us, at one time and another,â observed Poirot philosophically.
But Jackâs face had hardened.
âThereâs something else. Iâm my fatherâs son. Would any one marry me, knowing that?â
âYou are your fatherâs son, you say. Hastings here will tell you that I believe in heredityââ
âWell, thenââ
âWait. I know a woman, a woman of courage and endurance, capable of great love, of supreme self-sacrificeââ
The boy looked up. His eyes softened.
âMy mother!â
âYes. You are your motherâs son as well as your fatherâs. Go then to Mademoiselle Bella. Tell her everything. Keep nothing backâand see what she will say!â
Jack looked irresolute.
âGo to her as a boy no longer, but a manâa man bowed by the fate of the Past, and the fate of Today, but looking forward to a new and wonderful life. Ask her to share it with you. You may not realize it, but your love for each other has been tested in the fire and not found wanting. You have both been willing to lay down your lives for each other.â
And what of Captain Arthur Hastings, humble chronicler of these pages?
There is some talk of his joining the Renaulds on a ranch across the seas, but for the end of this story I prefer to go back to a morning in the garden of the Villa GeneviĂšve.
âI canât call you Bella,â I said, âsince it isnât your name. And Dulcie seems so unfamiliar. So itâs got to be Cinderella. Cinderella married the Prince, you remember. Iâm not a Prince, butââ
She interrupted me.
âCinderella warned him, Iâm sure! You see, she couldnât promise to turn into a princess. She was only a little scullion after allââ
âItâs the Princeâs turn to interrupt,â I interpolated. âDo you know what he said?â
âNo?â
âââHell!â said the Princeâand kissed her!â
And I suited the action to the word.
