Bad News

The next day, us four went to the retirement home. It was only a half an hour drive from David’s house. When we got there we walked up to the front desk and asked for a Kendra Cook. “She hasn’t been here for a few days. She died of a heart attack three days ago. I would love to take a message but, you know.” We all walked out and got in Alex’s car. Alex looked at me and for the first time I could see fear in his eyes. He knew that we only had one choice. He drove is to Max’s house or at least where she used to live.

It was so dark and vines were growing on all sides of the house. Jace showed up on her lawn. “What are you four doing here?” “We are taking care of Max, seems how you aren’t any help.” Kate said snippy. “You’re off with Jaz all the time, so we are taking measures into our own hands.” I threw out snippier than ever. “You can’t go in there.” David gave him a look. “And why not, because you can’t?” Which is true, Jace can’t go in there because it is another ghost’s house. Just like how Max can’t go into Jace’s house. “No, because I won’t let you all.” “Watch us.” And just like that we all walked through Jace and onto the front porch.

Alex slowly opened the door and walked in. “All good.” I heard the fear in his voice. I walked up behind him, then David, then Kate. “Okay just grab something, anything and let’s get out of here.” I could only see so many things because of the darkness. I noticed a couch, a TV, and a stand. Then another room off what could be the living room. I mean, what other room would there be a couch, and a massive TV? I walked over to the stand and noticed things that cluttered it. Papers, mail (unopened), beads, and a picture. I picked up the picture. In it was Max when she was three, her mom, her dad, and her older sister. They were in front of the Superman at Darian Lake. They were all smiling, all but Max. This is perfect. “Guys, I got it. Let’s go!” We all ran out of the house pushing things out of the way and each other. When we got to the car we passed the picture around. “Why is she not smiling?” Kate was the only one to say anything. No one answered her, no one knew. Alex turned on the car. “Let’s go burn this picture and get rid of this mess.”

We got to the cemetery about eight at night. It was dark and cloudy, the only light we got was the light of out flashlight. We were searching for what seemed like days but was only thirty minutes, trying to find Max’s grave. Then I heard Alex yell. “Found it!” We all ran to him and grabbed the Nupla shovels and stared digging. “This is so wrong.” Kate was never the one to do anything like this, she was the good one in our group, and we love her for that. Without her, the rest of us could be in jail. David laughed. With ten minutes of digging I heard a loud bang. “I hit something.” We found her casket. I opened it and took the picture out of my pocket and handed it to Alex. He took out his lighter and set the picture on fire and threw it in the open casket. After the picture was completely gone we all smiled and shouted. David was so happy he kissed Kate. Alex and I laughed. He looked at me, his eyes filled with relief. He picked me up, spun me around put me back on the ground and told me I was the girl, and then kissed me.

Epilogue

Ever since the graveyard bonfire, Max was never seen again, same with Jace. None of us could figure out why Jace didn’t want us to go into Max’s house, but it didn’t matter anymore. David married Kate and I married the bad boy. I moved on to deal with the pain of my mother’s death. Alex helped me find my dad, he is in the Army and doing well, Alex and I are visiting him when he comes back to New York. As for David and Kate, they are still out friends, they moved to LA. They invited us to live with them, but we don’t think that we are ready for that yet. Besides, I have my dad here, and no Jace or Max.
