knew I shouldnât have let them be alone!â he said.
âWhatâs wrong? Did Kei do something?â she asked.
âI donât know. But sheâs really mad, and really confused,â he explained.
âBig brother!â Amai cried when Kei wouldnât let go.
âFuteki, Iâll be right back,â Taizen said.
âO-okay,â Futeki stuttered when Taizen hugged her.
âWhatâs wrong Amai?â Taizen said running up to her. He didnât see Kei, but he ignored that.
âBig brother, KeiâŠheâŠ,â Amai said looking up.
Taizen picked her up like the little kid she was. âTell me all about it. Iâll listen,â Taizen said sitting down with Amai in his lap.
Amai put her head on Taizenâs chest. âHeâs not the right personâŠheâŠ,â she started.
Taizen listened to the thoughts around him until he heard Keiâs.
Where is she? All I wanted to know is what I did wrongâŠmaybe sheâs mad because I think about Hisakata⊠Kei thought.
Taizen twitched. âWhatâs this about? Are you just jealous?â he asked.
âI am not jealous! You listen to his thoughts in class! You listen to his thoughts when heâs around me! I barely ever hear any thoughts about me! Not even my name! If he really wanted me, my name would be in his head at least once! Donât you think?!â Amai exclaimed.
âShhh, hush now,â Taizen said with and understanding look. Go hang out with someone else. If you want you can stick with me and Futeki.
Amai nodded. I donât want anything to do with Kei!
âCâmon, the Futari is about to start,â Taizen said. He lifted Amai up then put her on her feet.
Taizen and Amai walked back over to Futeki.
âSorry about that Futeki. Do you mind if Amai tags along with us?â Taizen asked with Amaiâs hand in his.
âSure, I donât mind one bit!â She said smiling. She shivered then pulled her blue, long sleeved dress over her hands.
âHey, Yuki and Hoshi are here!â Taizen said watching them come in.
âSo are Kitai and Hatsu!â Amai said with a cheerful expression.
Futeki listened for their voices. âI really wish someone would tell me where they are!â she said.
âWeâre right here,â Kitai teased Futeki.
Futeki stuck her tongue out. âYou try being blind!â
Hoshi looked around. âWhereâs Kei? Wasnât he with you Amai?â
Amai looked away.
Taizen shook his head in a motion to stop.
âWhat happened?â Yuki asked. She ignored Taizen.
Taizen glared at Yuki.
Hatsu looked around for his twin brother Takai. Through the crowd he saw him and waved for him. âTakai! Over here!â he called. His brown hair and green eyes was a perfect match. He was around 15.
Takai looked over to Hatsu. âCome on Hisakata; letâs interact with the other people a little bit.â
âOkay,â she said moving her icy blue hair out of her face. Her hair came to the middle of her back; her eyes were a shimmering blue. She was about 14 like Kei.
They walked over there holding each otherâs hand.
Amai looked away. Can I go home? This day is just getting more frustrating by the moment⊠she thought looking at Taizen.
Taizen hesitated. Stay a little longer, if itâs not too muchâŠ
âOkay,â Amai said.
âHuh?â Kitai, who was now beside her, asked.
âNothingâŠ,â she said. âIâm gonna get some punchâŠ,â she said walking off.
She was at the punch table when she heard a voice.
âHey,â it said from behind her.
She turned around to see a boy with orange hair and orange eyes looking straight at her. âWho are you?â she asked. âAnd your little fox isâŠso cute!â
âUmâŠ,â he paused. âMy name is FoxâŠthis is Foxtrot,â he said putting his hand out to shake Amaiâs.
Amai hesitated, but shook his hand. His thoughts are so clear⊠âAmai Yaiba. So youâre the new student? You skipped yesterdayâŠ,â she said pouring a cup of punch.
Fox turned his head but kept his eyes on Amai. BeautifulâŠthatâs the only word I can think ofâŠ. he thought.
Amai stopped and turned her body to Fox. âI couldnât be more thankfulâŠ,â she said with a smile.
Uh⊠âWhat do you mean?â he asked looking at her.
âI can-â she stopped herself. Only Taizen, Yuki, and Ganjou know that Iâm a spell master⊠I canât tell anyone else⊠âI canâŠread your faceâŠitâs not that hard,â she lied biting her lip.
âAweâŠcanât you tell me the truth? How did you know I was a new kid, I skipped school yesterday, and I didnât say anything a moment ago,â he said leaning up against a nearby tree.
Amai bowed her head. âIâmâŠa spell masterâŠ,â she whispered so that only Fox could hear.
âAh, that explainsâŠ,â he said looking at the bright blue sky. âWho were you running away from? I can read your expression. Youâre too easy to figure out,â he said petting Foxtrot.
âI wasnât running away-â
In an instant, Foxâs finger was at Amaiâs lip. âTruthfully. I can tell when youâre lying,â he said moving his finger.
Amai bowed her head. âKei TokuâŠheâŠ,â Amai paused. Why am I telling him about my life? I just met himâŠ
âI get it-â
âThere you are Amai!â Kei called trotting over to Amai.
She bowed her head.
âWho are you?â Kei asked looking at Fox.
Fox looked at Amai. He put Foxtrot on the ground and smiled. âIâd rather know who you are first.â
âIâm Kei,â Kei said reaching his hand out for Amaiâs.
âWould you just leave me alone?!â Amai shouted at Kei. She pulled her hand away and glared at him.
Kei looked at Amai with confusion. He put his hand on her shoulder. âAmai calm down-â
âDonât you see that Iâm trying to get away from you?!â she shouted trying to push him away.
Fox watched with confusion as Amaiâs eyes grew angry.
Amai looked at Fox with tears in her eyes. The look on her face was shouting âhelp meâ.
âFoxtrot,â Fox said watching Amai.
âDonât hurt himâŠ,â she whispered. She fell to her knees.
Fox ran over to her. âAmai? Are you okay?â he asked kneeling down beside her.
Amai looked at Fox. Is he the one? I feel comfortable around himâŠbut⊠she thought as she looked at him. Her eyes were filled with tears. âIâmâŠfineâŠ,â she cried. She leaned on him.
Kei glared as he held Foxtrot in front of him. âStupid foxâŠsee what you made me do?â he said looking at Foxtrot.
âYouâre the stupid one!â Foxtrot yelled snarling her teeth.
Kei put her down. âHehâŠguess I didnât see that comingâŠ,â he said watching Foxtrot.
Amai looked at Kei then back to the ground.
Kei reached his hand out. âIâm sorry Amai.â
âI said go away!â she yelled. She stood up bowing her head.
Kei took a step toward her.
She ran off crying. KeiâŠyouâŠyou jerk! She thought running away from the festival. She ran to the memorial stone.
When she got there she wiped the snow of her mother and fatherâs names. Mother⊠father⊠she let out a little chuckle. âI couldnât even say his name rightâŠhow do you expect me to fight him?â she cried tracing her finger over the lettering.
She felt a hand on her shoulder then turned her head to see who it was. She looked back to the memorial stone once again feeling the names. âThey died when I was fiveâŠI miss them,â she said.
âI know how it feelsâŠI lost my whole clan. No one survived. Not even our leader,â Fox said letting Foxtrot crawl into his coat.
Amai turned to him. âThatâs horribleâŠ,â she said wiping the tears from her eyes.
âYeahâŠwell, I donât want you to get sick. Letâs go back to the festival,â he said.
Amai stopped and bowed her head. âKeiâŠheâs still there.â
Fox hesitated. âYeahâŠ.â
âIâm going homeâŠ,â she said walking past Fox.
âBut do I?â Fox asked putting Foxtrot on the ground.
âWhat do you mean?â
âIâd like to get to know you, Amai,â he said walking to her.
âIâll see you tomorrow at school. We can talk then, Iâm just not in a good moodâŠ,â she said. She closed her eyes and said, âTerepo-to. See ya Fox,â then she vanished.
âYa try to comfort them and they vanishâŠI donât get it. HmmâŠ,â Fox said dazed.
âFox, snap out of it! Hello, earth to Fox!â Foxtrot said looking up at Fox. She looked at Fox then to where Amai was. She smiled. AweâŠsheâll love Amai. I donât think Fox even knowsâŠhmmâŠ
Amai sat on the front porch with her face buried in her hands. Why should I cry so much?! She sat there until it started getting dark.
Taizen and Yuki were walking to the house when they saw Amai on the porch.
Taizen looked at Yuki. âYouâre a girl, you talk to herâŠ,â he whispered.
Yuki nodded. She went up to Amai. âAmaiâŠis there something wrong?â she asked.
âYeahâŠcan we talk about this later? Iâm not in the moodâŠ,â she said.
âAmaiâŠnow is fine. Letâs go up to my room,â Yuki said.
Amai nodded. âYou winâŠ,â she said standing up.
Taizen went up to his room. SheeshâŠgirls⊠he thought.
He went to his closet and pulled out his black t-shirt. He changed after he closed his door.
He pulled out his note book and went to his bed.
Canât people care to observe? Taizen heard through his thoughts. He closed the note book. âWhere and who are you?â he asked looking around his room.
âIâm right here. You havenât given me a name yet,â a female voice said.
Taizen looked beside him. âYouâre a ferretâŠI think Iâm going crazyâŠ,â he said putting his hand on his head.
âYouâre not going crazy, Taizen,â she said.
âHey, how do you know my name?â Taizen said looking at the ferret.
She sighed. âYouâre my master. I havenât been able to come to you until now because of Sardis. Iâll explain that later though,â she said.
Taizen picked her up. âHow old are you?â
âDonât you know itâs rude to ask a girl how old she is? ButâŠyou are my master, youâve gotta knowâŠ,â she sighed. âIâm the same age as you. Your mother and father were the masters of my father and mother,â she explained.
âMother and father didnât have any petsâŠ,â Taizen said.
âYes they did. You didnât see them because your parents didnât let you. If a master doesnât want their companion to be seen by certain people, those few people canât see them. Do you understand?â
Taizen soaked it in. âUm, I guess so. Am I the only one?â he asked.
âNo. Thereâs Fox and Foxtrot, who youâre sister knows. Thereâs one who will belong to Amai. And another who will belong to Yuki,â she explained.
âAmai knowsâŠFox andâŠFoxtrot?â Taizen asked.
âYeah, theyâre from the âKitsuneâ clan,â she said.
âHmmâŠ,â he paused. âYou really need a nameâŠ,â he said when he was about to call her.
âIâd love one!â she said with glee.
âKoichouâŠthatâs good,â he said.
âI love it!â Koichou said crawling into Taizenâs lap. She looked up at him as if to say, âthanksâ to an old friend.
âThatâs good,â he said.
âYou said that Yuki and Amai had an animal eachâŠwhat animals are they?â he asked.
âUmâŠAmaiâs animal is a snow fox. Yukiâs is a silver dove,â she said smiling.
Taizen laughed. âHave they come to them yet?â
âYeah, we should go check on them now,â Koichou said.
Taizen stood up with Koichou on his shoulder. He walked to Yukiâs room and knocked on the door.
âCome in?â Yuki called.
Taizen walked in to see Amai holding a snow white fox and Yuki holding a silver dove.
Yuki looked at Taizen. âThey were right!â she said.
Amai smiled. âThis is Chiisai,â she said snuggling the white, three tailed fox.
âThis is Rikka, may I ask her name?â she said
âWhatâs wrong? Did Kei do something?â she asked.
âI donât know. But sheâs really mad, and really confused,â he explained.
