Who the fuck was Brook?
I watched as Roth picked up some athletic tape and began wrapping up my fists. “I’m fighting someone?” I asked, my curiosity burning brighter than my need to be silent.
“No, you are getting beat by someone. Brook has never been beaten. The last guy he killed, he did it in less than a minute.” Lou said and laughed as I looked up at him in uncertainty.
He walked out, and I followed with Roth close behind me. Closer than normal.
“It’s a stall brawl.”
I tried to turn toward him as we walked out of the house and into the back where there were crowds of people all standing and waiting for the main event to start. “What the fuck is a-”
He pushed me back forward, “Don’t turn the fuck around.” We kept walking along the path. “They’re going to lock you in a box with a fucking killer. There will be no air. You have to kill him, or he will kill you, or you both will die. The only way the door opens is when someone is dead. Don’t leave that baby here alone.” That was all he said before we made our way to the middle of the makeshift outdoor arena where there was a large transparent box in the middle of the crowd.
I had to laugh now I could see what Roth meant, the box was no bigger than a bathroom stall. Whoever I was fighting and I would be stuffed into a box barely big enough to fit one person, and then we would have to beat one another to death in close combat. All while running out of oxygen.
I watched the excitement grow as the person I could only assume was my opponent started to make his way down to the designated area. Money was being passed, and tickets being handed out. The fucking psychos were betting on us.
I swallowed hard and tried to keep a straight face as the man made his way into the box, Roth was right he was a killer. He was at least double my size, had more than a few inches of height over me, and even from where I stood, I could see the old scars that marred his body. He was seasoned. He moved around the little box like it was his second home, clearly not his first fight. He put his head out of the door and took in deep breaths, prepping his lungs for what was about to come.
I looked into the crowd, and I recognized several people, Ruby and Harrington, Vale was standing behind what looked like one of the Vilanuevas brothers. He was one of their bodyguards. Who would have thought snitching would have gotten him that life? Personally, I felt like he deserved to be burned at the stake for the shit he pulled, then again, he was out there living a life of luxury while I was being tortured to death slowly.
Everyone was decked out in their fancy clothes, full glasses of champagne, and small finger foods circulating the crowd. I wanted to scream and demand they realize what they were a part of, but I could tell by the way they all were glaring or laughing as I walked toward the small box, no one cared.
I was in this on my own.
“Let’s go!” The man inside the box screamed at me and began jumping in place. I looked over to Vale one last time as he laughed and passed a glass of champagne toward Ruby, who was laughing and sweetly laying a hand on his chest.
That man was my brother. I had sworn to give my life for him and any other patched member of the Wings of Diablo crew. Yet here I was about to be beaten to death, and not one of them was around to help me. Forgotten. Abandoned. Thrown away like trash.
I walked into the box. We were so close his breath was blowing the shaggy hair that had fallen into my eyes away from my face. Harrington Giles walked up to the box and turned to address the crowd.
“Ladies and Gentleman, today we have a fight to the death match, Nico vs. Brook. All bets will need to be placed before the door is shut. We have Brook winning with 3 to 1 odds. Any more takers.” He bellowed as the crowd rushed toward the bookies.
He turned back to the box, “Don’t make me look bad, boy. If you’re gonna die, do it spectacularly.”
He turned back around, “Let’s get this started!” He moved to the door, and I listened as all sounds of the outside world vanished, and all I could hear was the pounding of my own heart and the slow deep breaths of the killer in front of me.
The door clicked shut, and in the next second, the large man was swinging his giant fists toward my face. I tried to dodge but immediately came in contact with the wall, there was nowhere for me to go. I covered my face, but that only made him angrier. “Die, you little bitch, die!” He screamed as he grabbed me by my wrists and slammed me into the wall to the side, my nose crunched, and the blood poured down my throat. I tried to get a good breath in, but the air already started to feel light. There wasn’t enough oxygen. I swung my arms toward him. I made contact a few times, but they seemed to bounce off his solid body. I screamed my frustration, nothing I was doing was working, and he was now power driving his knee into my stomach, blood was coming from my mouth, and I could feel my bones breaking from the force.
The world was beginning to sway in front of my eyes, and black spots cloud my vision. I was running out of air.
“Don’t leave that baby alone…” Roth’s last
