She swats at him. âYou flatterer.â
I canât believe that itâs him. Now, he has that going for him too.
âAnd you also played, Fae?â asks Brandon.
âYeah, guess who?â
âThen that would make youâŠwaitâŠit canât be.â His eyes widen. âStarFeather?â
I grin and nod.
âCommander. I canât believe it!â he says. âNow I know weâll win.â
âSo whatâs the plan?â asks Nav. âYou figured out how to free the compelled people from the Evo?â
âI did,â I say.
âAnd deal with the military?â asks Alexander.
âSure did. Also, a way to breach their walls and hack their network.â
The three of them nod, looking hopeful.
âCouldnât we just steal their data and leave their destruction to someone else?â asks Sunny.
âNo. This is personal,â says Nav. âThe NIA killed my husband, my dad, and many other innocents.â
âI agree,â says Alexander. âI want to be the one to avenge Americus and free America.â
Ron Paul shifts his feet on Alexanderâs shoulder and says, âFree America.â
âPlus, we need to get them back for what they did to Fae.â
I favor Alexander with a smile. âI understand where youâre coming from, Sunny. I donât like the risk, but any agency we go to might be working with the NIA. We canât trust anyone. Besides, they killed Barbra, chased away my dad, and made me kill Americus.â And even if they didnât commit those crimes, Iâd support my friendsâ goals no matter what.
Sunny frowns but nods.
âSo what are you thinking, Commander Luna?â asks Alexander.
âFirst, weâre going to need Gabriel and his Knights of Christ,â I say.
Nav scowls at the name. âWe donât need that scumbag. He canât be trusted.â
âI agree with Nav on this,â says Alexander. âHeâs a loose cannon.â
Says the other loose cannon.
âIâm with them,â says Brandon. âHe killed our prisoner against orders.â
Theyâre right, but we need him. âHe wouldnât be my first choice, or second, or even hundredth. But he has the same goals as us, and he has things I need.â
âHe tried to kill me,â says Sunny.
He said he accepted Sunny into his heart. For some reason, I believe him. âHe wonât do it again.â
Nav narrows her eyes at me.
âHe wonât,â I say. âOr heâll suffer the same fate as anyone trying to hurt my friends.â
Nav frowns but nods. âIâll tolerate him if we need him.â
The others agree.
âAlexander, do you have his contact info?â I ask.
âAmericus gave it to me before he left.â
âCall him,â I say. âWeâll probably have to convince him to join us after what happened.â
Alexander calls on speakerphone.
âWhat do you want, boy?â asks Gabriel.
Not a great start.
âWe need your help,â says Alexander.
âI donât follow Americusâ orders anymore. He couldnât even call me himself?â
âHeâs dead,â says Alexander.
Silence on the other end.
âAre you still there?â
âWhat happened?â asks Gabriel, his voice suddenly brittle.
âDirector Tempton of the NIA killed him,â says Alexander, leaving out my part. âWe also have credible evidence that theyâre responsible for the Evo takeover.â
Gabriel groans. âThose heathens will burn in hell for this, but first, theyâll face my wrath. I can bring fifty Knights and whatever else you need. Know this, though. Iâm going to kill anyone who took the mark of the beast.â
Alexander agrees, his fingers crossed behind his back. I detail the plan to Gabriel, and we hang up.
âAlexander, I need your help planning the finer details of this mission,â I say, knowing heâll love it and needing his expertise.
Alexander pumps his fist. âThe tactical geniuses saving the day again!â
Ron Paul caws, then flies to a table. He snatches a beetle and gobbles it down.
I grin. âNav, Iâll need your help devising a Trojan horse.â
âIâve made quite a few in my day,â she says. âSounds fun.â
âBrandon, practice with your sniper rifle tonight. Youâll need to make a critical shot tomorrow.â
âIâm on it, Commander,â says Brandon.
âAnd Sunny,â I say, âI need you to build an electrical device for the Obliterator suit.â
âGive me the details, and Iâll get to work.â
I look between them and couldnât be happier with who I ended up with. Although the stakes are high for the country, Iâm still more concerned about my friends. âTomorrow, the five of us are going to take on the entire NIA establishment. Theyâre a powerful organization, but we will win, and they will pay.â
Alexanderâs eye burns with determination. âEven though weâre massively outnumbered, like the legend Simon Montfort in the battle of Muret, I will devastate the NIA.â
âŒâŒâŒ
We park our cloaked military truck on the outskirts of the NIA compound. Everyone but Sunny and I leaps out and readies their AK710s, sidearms, and various grenades. I take a moment to review my plans for any last-minute alterations, always the perfectionist. My mind whirls through countless possibilities and solutions until my nerves start to choke me.
âThis is a good plan, right Sunny?â
âIt is. Plus, since you delayed the military with your faulty intel, weâll have the time we need to pull it off.â
I nod, feeling bolstered. Heâs right. We join the others and peek over the hill at the massive black cube that houses the NIA headquarters.
âOur taxpayer dollars put to good use,â says Brandon as he adjusts the strap of his three-oh-eight sniper rifle.
âEnslaving us with our own money,â says Nav.
âThey wonât be around much longer when Sunny and I are done with them,â says Alexander as he pats Sunnyâs back.
Sunny extends his electric gun and nods, an extra battery strapped to his body.
I fidget with my q-link as I examine the ominous structure. It has smooth, black, windowless walls and a flat roof. It looks more like something out of a dystopian sci-fi novel than a real government building.
I stand tall and fix my eyes on each of my companions in turn.
