âThatâs rebellion,â murmured Alyosha, looking down.
âRebellion? I am sorry you call it that,â said Ivan earnestly. âOne can hardly live in rebellion, and I want to live. Tell me yourself, I challenge youâ âanswer. Imagine that you are creating a fabric of human destiny with the object of making men happy in the end, giving them peace and rest at last, but that it was essential and inevitable to torture to death only one tiny creatureâ âthat baby beating its breast with its fist, for instanceâ âand to found that edifice on its unavenged tears, would you consent to be the architect on those conditions? Tell me, and tell the truth.â
âNo, I wouldnât consent,â said Alyosha softly.
âAnd can you admit the idea that men for whom you are building it would agree to accept their happiness on the foundation of the unexpiated blood of a little victim? And accepting it would remain happy forever?â
âNo, I canât admit it. Brother,â said Alyosha suddenly, with flashing eyes, âyou said just now, is there a being in the whole world who would have the right to forgive and could forgive? But there is a Being and He can forgive everything, all and for all, because He gave His innocent blood for all and everything. You have forgotten Him, and on Him is built the edifice, and it is to Him they cry aloud, âThou art just, O Lord, for Thy ways are revealed!âââ
âAh! the One without sin and His blood! No, I have not forgotten Him; on the contrary Iâve been wondering all the time how it was you did not bring Him in before, for usually all arguments on your side put Him in the foreground. Do you know, Alyoshaâ âdonât laugh! I made a poem about a year ago. If you can waste another ten minutes on me, Iâll tell it to you.â
âYou wrote a poem?â
âOh, no, I didnât write it,â laughed Ivan, âand Iâve never written two lines of poetry in my life. But I made up this poem in prose and I remembered it. I was carried away when I made it up. You will be my first readerâ âthat is listener. Why should an author forego even one listener?â smiled Ivan. âShall I tell it to you?â
âI am all attention,â said Alyosha.
âMy poem is called âThe Grand Inquisitorâ; itâs a ridiculous thing, but I want to tell it to you.â
V The Grand InquisitorâEven this must have a prefaceâ âthat is, a literary preface,â laughed Ivan, âand I am a poor hand at making one. You see, my action takes place in the sixteenth century, and at that time, as you probably learnt at school, it was customary in poetry to bring down heavenly powers on earth. Not to speak of Dante, in France, clerks, as well as the monks in the monasteries, used to give regular performances in which the Madonna, the saints, the angels, Christ, and God himself were brought on the stage. In those days it was done in all simplicity. In Victor Hugoâs Notre Dame de Paris an edifying and gratuitous spectacle was provided for the people in the HĂŽtel de Ville of Paris in the reign of Louis XI in honor of the birth of the dauphin. It was called Le bon jugement de la trĂšs sainte et gracieuse Vierge Marie, and she appears herself on the stage and pronounces her bon jugement. Similar plays, chiefly from the Old Testament, were occasionally performed in Moscow too, up to the times of Peter the Great. But besides plays there were all sorts of legends and ballads scattered about the world, in which the saints and angels and all the powers of Heaven took part when required.
