Ultimately, they retreated to Eiraâs room.
It was a cramped place, like every apprenticeâs dormitory chambers. But Tower apprentices didnât have to share their rooms with others, which was better than most of the servants and staff in the palace. Alyss plopped herself on Eiraâs bed, immediately producing a blob of clay from her pouch and beginning to magically manipulate it. Eira chose to pace instead.
âWhat do you think it will be?â Alyss asked as she wriggled her fingers, watching the clay writhe and dance. âA tournament, so there must be games of some kind.â
âI wonder how theyâll manage to have us compete against each other⊠The elfinâs magicâLightspinningâis so different from ours. And I donât know anything of the Twilight Kingdom or the others.â
âIf you donât know it then no one in Solaris does.â Alyss laughed. âArenât you excited to find out?â
âI could burst.â Eira curled and uncurled her fingers. Every icy wall sheâd built up around her emotions had thawed. Magic seeped from her pores. She was surprised she wasnât leaving wet footprints behind her with every step. âI wonder if the tournament will be here. If weâll get to see them and whatever magic they do have.â
âOf course it will be. Solaris is the center of the world,â Alyss proudly proclaimed.
âYou donât honestly believe that propaganda.â
âEven with the new maps, itâs just Solaris and Meru out there.â
âThe world is so much larger, Alyss.â Eira stopped, staring out past the leaded glass of her window. The frosty peaks of the mountains teased her with that jagged horizon line. The world was out there, calling to her. Whispering from the great unknown. âSolaris was the center of the world, until trade opened with Meru. That was just three years ago. Now look, thereâs three, three other kingdoms! Think of how many more there could be.â
âIâd rather not.â Alyss laughed. âHistory class is already unbearable. Think of how much worse it will be if we keep making or discovering new history.â
âEither way, I just want to see their world,â Eira said wistfully. âI want to see Lightspinning in person. They say itâs like weaving sunlight.â
âAnd the Crones of the Mother say itâs sacrilege to compare it that way.â
âThe Crones of the Mother hate progress.â Eira shook her head and dismissed the notion.
âYou know, thereâs one way to ensure you see them.â
âWhat?â Eira turned to face Alyss.
âGo to the tournament.â
âObviously.â Eira rolled her eyes. âBut Iâm not going to be able to get there if itâs on Meru. Unlike the crown princess, I donât have a whole armada to carry me back and forth.â
âThereâs a way to get there.â A bright grin crossed Alyssâs cheeks, nearly from ear to ear. âCompete.â
âWhat?â Eira whispered.
âBe a competitor.â
âWe donât evenâŠwe donât know how.â
âYou could ask your uncle. Youâll likely be the first to know,â Alyss said eagerly. âThink, you and I could have a leg up on all the others.â
âItâll likely be the instructors, or sorcerers far better than us.â Eira hated how disappointingly logical she was inclined to be.
âWe can be just as good as any of the instructors and are better than halfâyou know it.â
âYou might be just as good.â
âWe are,â Alyss said firmly. âAnd if you try and fight me Iâll throw this clay in your face and make it stick in your hair.â
âIâm sure my brotââ Eira was interrupted by a deep growl of her stomach.
âHa! You are hungry.â Alyss sent the clay back into her pouch just as it was beginning to take the shape of a bird. Eira was grateful it didnât end up on her head. âI knew it.â
âI only said I wasnât because it was so crowded.â
âItâs likely calmer now; letâs go.â Alyss linked her elbow with Eiraâs and pulled her into the hall. âWeâll go. Weâll eat. And weâll plan our training,â Alyss decreed.
âTraining?â
Alyss tossed her braids over her shoulder dramatically. âOf course. We want to be in top shape if weâre going to be competitors.â

For a week, Eira went along with Alyssâs pushing to turn themselves into âtop competitors.â Predictably, by day seven, their morning jogs ended up being more of a stroll around the city and ending either at the bookstore or the sundries store for Alyssâs crafts. Not that Eira was complaining. The more she had time to think about the possible logistics of this competition, the more she doubted she would have any chance of actually participating.
She and Alyss were sitting in one of the Tower lounges, enjoying a peaceful, quiet evening, when a young apprentice approached.
âEira Landan?â He stayed a few steps away and kept his eyes down. Eira had learned just how quickly rumors of her could spread in the Tower.
âYou know itâs me. What does the minister want?â She avoided calling Fritz her uncle and drawing any more attention to the familial bond.
âHeâd like a word. He sent me to tell you heâd be in his chambers.â
âAll right, Iâll head over.â Eira closed the cartography book sheâd been flipping throughâlooking at maps of Meruâs crescent-shaped coastline and the city of Risen nestled within itâand slipped it into her bag as the young man left.
Alyss caught her hand, yanking her close. âI swear to the Mother above, if you get the opportunity to sign up early for this competition and donât write my name downââ
âAlyss.â Eira stopped her friend with a laugh. âThis likely has nothing to do with the competition. We donât even know what âsigning upâ means yet, or if we can.â
âMinister Fritz said he should have word in a week. I bet
