“All right, over to the corner. Fifteen minutes.”
She stood and started walking over to the corner, having to clench her butt cheeks to ensure the damn thing didn’t fall out.
Ohhh. Ouch. That stung.
She sucked in a breath.
“Starting to sting?” he asked cheerfully. She glanced over to find he was stripping off the gloves. That worm-bum. He’d known it would sting when she moved and he hadn’t warned her.
“Keep moving, Georgie-girl.”
“But it stings,” she wailed.
“Good. It’s meant to sting.” He pointed at the corner. “Corner. Now.”
The ginger was really starting to burn as she shuffled over. When she was finally in the corner, she attempted to unclench her butt cheeks. But, oh God, it was hard to stay still. The burn seemed to keep growing. She shifted her weight from foot to foot. Nothing made it feel better.
“Five more minutes,” Ed told her.
Five more minutes! She couldn’t even stand five more seconds!
Five more minutes passed and thankfully, the burn didn’t actually get worse the way she feared it might. But by the time he helped her back to the bed and into her former position, she was more than ready to get the nasty thing out of her ass.
He put his gloves back on then slowly removed it, putting it back in the bag.
“You’re not keeping it!” she said aghast.
He let out a bark of laughter. “No, my girl. This is going straight in the trash.” He walked into the bathroom. When he returned, he didn’t have the ginger or his gloves. Grabbing hold of her, he drew her against him, wrapping his arms around her.
“You did so well, baby. I’m proud of you.”
“For taking a piece of ginger up the ass? Your bar for being proud of me is kind of low.”
He smacked her ass and she yelped.
“No, smart ass. For recognizing that you deserved to be punished and not taking the out I gave you. For being strong. For being you. My baby. My woman. The best thing to ever happen to me.”
In the morning, she was surprised to wake up on her own. That never happened. But when she cleared the sleep from her eyes, she saw that there was a glass bottle with a piece of paper rolled up in it on the pillow next to her.
Excitement filled her. Sitting up, she grabbed the bottle and drew out the piece of paper. A treasure map.
Quickly, she got dressed in her pirate outfit, complete with telescope, sword, pirate hat, eye patch, and Squawkers.
She set out to find the treasure. It was weird that Ed wasn’t around. He now watched her like a hawk. But she set off, certain she would find him along the way.
It was difficult. There were other pirates everywhere, trying to rob her of her treasure map. And it was hard work, trekking around the backyard. But finally, she found the X that marked the spot. It was sprayed in red paint on the ground. And in the middle of the X, there was a small velvet box.
Her breath caught in her chest as she moved forward and picked the box up.
Ed stepped out from behind the woodshed. He walked towards her then got down on one knee. Her heart skipped a beat. Was he . . .
He took the box from her hands and opened it.
“Georgina Catherine James, you’re my whole damn world. Without you, my life is nothing. I don’t even want to imagine it. I want nothing more than for you to be my wife. To come home to you every day, go to sleep holding you, wake up kissing you. Please, will you marry me?”
She could barely speak, she was so overcome. Alarm started to fill his face.
Speak, Georgie. “Of course I’ll marry you. I couldn’t imagine my life without you by my side, protecting me, watching over me, helping me sail the seven seas in search of treasure.”
He placed the ring on her finger and she stared down at it, glistening under the sunlight. It was beautiful. A single solitaire. Classic. Gorgeous.
He stood and gathered her into his arms. “I don’t need to search for treasure, because I found the greatest treasure in the world when I met you.”
“The things you say.”
