assassin is on it!”

“Excellent,” Hade chuckled with pleasant menace. “Now we wait for the disaster to unfold in a most spectacular fashion.”

—: Chapter 71 :—

Mira teased, “Is this your way of avoiding our bet? Asking a million questions?”

“No,” I chuckled and lowered my visor to focus on my mech hands until they started washing themselves again. “Wow. I can feel my mech’s individual fingers like they were my own. This is unbelievable.”

“That’s not the only thing you can feel,” Mira purred. “Permission to touch the king’s Royal Person?”

“Yeah. Go for it.”

Her rig stepped up to mine and she gently grabbed my rig’s robot crotch.

ZING!

Sizzling sensations tickled pleasantly through my groin.

I laughed and felt myself getting hard. Definitely not taking my visor off now. Didn’t want to confuse the SRF or SR Interpreter or whatever.

Mira was visible smirking in my comms window. She said seductively. “It doesn’t count if we do it in our rigs.”

“Wait,” I chuckled, “don’t tell me our rigs are anatomically equipped?”

“No,” she giggled and released me. “If you want that, we’ll have to do it the old fashioned way.”

“Which is?”

“In bed. After I win our bet.” She winked over comms. “Now run your rig around like you said. Get a feel for it.”

“Right,” I grinned.

Turned out, the key to piloting a YX-37 battle mech — other than keeping your visor down — was staying calm, focused, and thinking clearly, something I had done daily for years and years as an engineer.

It wasn’t long before I — I should say my mech — was jogging confidently around the deck, taking long, loping strides, and swinging around my battle-armored arms. Like the Rolbotics exosuit, it was easy to jog at 30-40 kph without breaking a sweat or getting short of breath. Heck, in the exosuit, I actually had to move my limbs. In the Dragonfire, I just sat here concentrating. It was mentally challenging but not physically taxing. Well, not yet. We all know how draining intensely competitive gaming can be. Or competitive chess. An intense all day tournament can leave you mentally exhausted.

Still jogging along the deck, I swerved around the rows of parked mechs like they were a simple obstacle course. That was so easy it was barely worth the practice.

Next, I flexed my battle hands experimentally, getting a sense of finger responsiveness and wrist mobility. Much better than the Rolbotics exosuit. Almost as good as my own human hands. My initial impressions said the Dragonfire’s mechanical fingers were so dextrous and responsive, I could use them to play an oversized piano or oversized guitar or drum kit, or something equally complicated if I had instruments big enough for the mech to play.

I thought with a smile, somebody roll out the giant musical instruments and giant Marshall stacks!

Mechadeth is gonna give an impromptu concert!

If only.

The more I moved around the deck in the Dragonfire, the quicker it became clear that, although I was an expert in the Rolbotics exosuit and knew its quirks and limits, this Zalaxian battle mech was a beast on another level. Going from the Rolbotics exosuit to the YX-37 was like learning to ride on a one-banger 50cc Vespa Primavera scooter, then jumping to a four-cylinder 1000cc Honda CBR superbike. One was not the other. If Roland and the boys were here now, they’d be falling over each other lining up to try piloting my Dragonfire. And doing the same for a shot at Mira.

Lucky me.

I hollered, “Crown to Mira! I can’t get over how responsive this is! I always thought our Rolbotics exosuit was smooth, but this battle mech is butter!”

Mira laughed, “I’m glad you like it, my king.”

“I like everything around here,” I winked, not sure if she was watching my face in her own comms window or not.

I continued my jog, upping the gymnastics by doing hops, jumps, cartwheels, diving rolls, flips — yes, flips — and anything else I could think of to push the limits of the battle armor, and get my head into this game and out of the games I wanted to play between Mira’s legs. I still had a bet to win.

“Mira to Crown, are you going to play all day, my king? Or can we get down and dirty like I know you want to? Out.”

“Ha!” I laughed. “You never stop, do you?”

“I told you I didn’t,” she flirted.

I could think of worse teachers to have, believe me.

I jogged back to where Mira waited in her rig. Her Dragonfire stood with one armored fist resting on one cocked and armored hip.

“Well?” she challenged over comms.

“Well what?”

“Are you ready to lose our bet?”

“What do I win again?”

“Bragging rights.”

“Don’t I get that either way?” I chuckled.

“No, you only get that if I win.”

“You mean you do. You get bragging rights for being my first. But seriously, what do I get if I win? You have to make this worth my while.”

“Hmm,” she said, her eyes darting around in the comms window. “How about this? If you win, I put my mouth where your money is and—”

“Isn’t that a given?” I snorted.

“Let me finish, my king. I was going to say, I put my mouth where your money is and I… never… ever… stop.”

“Never?” I chuckled.

“Not ever.”

At that moment, I realized my scepter was twitching and starting to drool in anticipation.

“Deal?” Mira asked.

“Deal,” I snorted. “But I’m going to hold you to it. An hour a day, every day, from now until forever.”

“Only an hour?” she teased. “I had planned on giving you two. Your loss!” she cheered.

I laughed so hard I squeezed out tears of joy.

This day was off to a great start.

The best ever, in fact.

What could possibly go wrong?

I could lose the bet and betray Oia, that’s what.

The other option was for me to break my word and go back on my promise to Mira.

No, I wouldn’t let that happen. My only option was to win this bet.

Yeah, right.

So!

Stupid!

In case you’re wondering, an assassination attempt on my life during my blackout bet with
