she headed toward the mob.

The horse’s hooves pounded on the ground, and the wind felt like hundreds of feathers brushing against her skin. She was free.

Well, for a second anyway.

Pulling her bow over her shoulder, she nocked an arrow and aimed for the Mad that were between her and Graham.

She made sure each shot was a kill shot to the head.

She avoided those who didn’t have glowing red eyes, but if they did, they were hers.

Ryder could see the relief in Graham’s eyes but he didn’t stop swinging his axes, just like the Mad didn’t stop coming for him.

“Want a lift?” Ryder yelled as she got closer to Graham.

“Sure, why not? Beats running,” Graham joked with relief. Ryder liked him, and if they lived through this fight he’d be handy in the next battle.

“Hop on,” Ryder called, slowing the horse enough for Graham to mount.

He kept swinging the axes as they made their way to the bottom of the hill.

Ryder fired an arrow at an oncoming Mad. “Ouch,” Graham yelped.

“Have you been bitten?” If he had, she’d throw him off this horse and get the hell away from him.

“No, your bony elbow went into my ribs,” Graham said.

“”Ryder laughed. “You can fight off the Mad, but my elbow is too bony?”

“That hurt.”

“It would have hurt more if I’d left you with the Mad.”

“True.”

Ryder brought the horse to a halt by Graham’s workshop and the man hopped down. “Thank you.”

Ryder headed back to the field to take down as many Mad as she could.

When the townspeople of Pinewood descended on the gang, Byrant had his gun aimed at a Mad woman who was coming straight for Massimo.

Massimo hadn’t noticed since he was fighting off another Mad.

Bryant didn’t make the kill shot. He couldn’t.

Leandro leapt into the air and turned into a white wolf to protect his dad. He dived at him, knocking the Mad off his feet. Leandro sank his teeth into the Mad’s neck and ripped out a chunk of flesh, killing him. He didn’t need two taps.

When Javier saw Leandro as a wolf, he had a flashback to the savage wolf that attacked him. Javier went for Leandro, and Willard threw his knives at him.

“Don’t hurt Fluffy,” Carter yelled, he didn’t care how big Javier was he slammed into Javier’s chest with all of his force, slamming him to the ground.

Javier snarled and pushed Carter off him. “Get the fuck off me!”

“Leandro is Fluffy. He’s a werewolf,” Carter explained.

Willard’s knife struck Fluffy’s leg, and he yelped.

“Don’t hurt my son!” Massimo screamed. His eyes glowed red, and his fangs dropped. The men all knew that Massimo was a vampire—it was kind of like part of the welcome info pack when they moved to the town—but they’d never actually seen him transform.

Massimo pulled the knife out of Leandro’s leg, and the wound healed quickly. “Anyone hurts Fluffy, you’ll have me to deal with,” Massimo vowed.

Leandro rolled his eyes.

“You got that?” Carter said to Javier.

“Yeah.”

“Let’s stop fighting one another and kill off the Mad. Ryder’s doing it on her own and putting us to shame. She’ll be bragging about it later,” Carter complained. He took off running toward the Mad, swinging his weapons.

Graham threw Kelvin a knife since he didn’t seem to have a weapon. He looked down at it, then screamed and ran toward the Mad.

The others joined in, except for Byrant. He hid inside the workshop.

Ryder fired her arrows at the oncoming Mad, aiming for their eyes. Each time she scored, it was like hitting the bull’s-eye.

A Mad grabbed Ryder’s leg and tried to pull her off the horse, but Ryder kicked him in the face. Blood splattered out of his mouth, and he stumbled back on the uneven ground. Ryder shot her last arrow and hit the bull’s-eye. He wasn’t going to get up after that.

Another woman came at her, so Ryder took out her knife and stabbed at the woman, aiming for the hands that were grabbing her. The woman released her grip and Ryder rode away.

Part of her wished that Carter or Graham was riding with her, because they would be able to take on the Mad who were getting too close.

She headed back to Graham’s workshop in the hope that he’d have some more arrows or other weapons she could use. She didn’t want to get close the Mad to kill them.

Ryder looked around for the others to see if she could get one of them to ride with her, but they were all out in the field fighting off the Mad. There were scores of Mad out there, but Ryder’s gang was taking them down. She allowed herself a brief moment to take stock of each of them.

Fluffy dived through the air, biting down on a Mad who was going for him. He didn’t stand a chance against Fluffy’s teeth and clamping jaws. Fluffy savaged the man, tossing him about like a rag doll.

Next to him was Massimo, and Ryder was quite impressed with his skills. She’d not expected him to move that quickly, and he was strong—much stronger than he looked. Massimo no longer looked like an old man. He looked like a vicious vampire, and Ryder was glad he was on her team.

Willard was throwing knives at the Mad, and Javier was taking them down when they were distracted by Willard’s knives. It looked like the two of them had patched up whatever was going on between them.

Vicky’s hair swung as she whirled the shovel at an oncoming Mad. Her weapon of choice suited her.

Koda was stabbing at the Mad with his spear, which was a good tool to keep them at arm’s length. She’d have to see if he had a spare one she could use, or maybe Ryder would make one of her own.

Carter was shooting at the Mad. He really was the best gunslinger, but she’d never tell him that. Where was Byrant? Ryder looked around for him. I guess he’s under cover somewhere so he
