Cy pulls the now colorful Amalia to her feet and he dips her backward, landing a searing kiss on her smiling lips. All of us onlookers stand and cheer for the bonded couple and I am in awe of the entire event.
Gavin pulls me under his arm and kisses me on the head. I want this moment for us someday. I want to be his Intended wife forever, with a long life lived in between. I can’t even say that I fully understand what all of this ceremony means, but I still want it.
Everyone runs up to hug the newlyweds and I trail behind the group, waiting my turn. I feel an itchy, creepy crawly feeling on the back of my neck and turn around to scan the woods behind me.
Everything is dark and I can’t see past the hanging lights around me. Still, I feel like someone out there has their eyes on me in particular. Maybe it’s another demon looking to avenge Barron, or maybe it’s Barron himself.
Either way, I’m ready for him and ready to start my own happy ending. I glare into the woods, letting the onlooker know that I mean business and I’m not afraid to take them on… even if it means killing every last one of them in the process.
Chapter 12
Being in an airplane for the second time in a week is surreal. It’s almost as if I have money and a life. The life part is definitely coming together, but I still don’t have the money bit. Everyone around me has plenty of it and zero qualms with paying my way through absolutely everything.
I’ve tried to push the offers away, but I don’t have a lot of choice. I’m being hunted by a demon and developing super powers, neither leaves much time for job hunting.
The first class seat in the much bigger airplane is plush and cozy. I could sleep easily here, if I wasn’t so nervous and sick to my stomach about meeting my father’s family in a new country. Going to Greece and seeing the amazing architecture is something I’ve always wanted to do, but I never even dreamed that I’d have a family out there somewhere.
I press my forehead against the cold glass window, not even caring that I’m going to end up with a red mark between my eyebrows. The view is too spectacular to miss at this elevation.
We are coming into Athens, with the vast blue ocean to our left and the home-crowded mountain ranges of the city. Speckles of green trees and hill peaks are drawn between the white, blue, and orange rooftops that layer the entire landscape below.
From what I can see, there is no rhyme or reason to the streets or neighborhoods, if there are any neighborhoods. It seems like Athens is an entire neighborhood in itself. I don’t think I could ever get enough pictures of this place.
As our plane approaches the ground, the busy hills of Athens fall away and open up to a wide space of grassland and a large airport. A hand lays on my shoulder and I turn to Gavin.
He has a tired smile on his stubbly face after waking from his hour long nap. I can’t deny that I enjoyed watching him sleep beside me, but the view outside my window pulled me away.
“Sounds like we made it, love. Are you excited?” Gavin asks me, leaning over his armrest into my personal space.
I shrug and rub my lips together. “I’m more nervous than excited I think.”
Gavin touches my cheek with his fingers and I sigh against the warmth and electricity there. I close my eyes and his voice brings me back to reality. “I can say with absolute certainty that they will love you. And so will my mom’s cousins. They’re kind of dull, but loveable.”
“They’re not dull, just distinguished!” Camilla shouts from her seat behind us and I laugh.
Gavin grimaces and sinks further into his seat, hiding from his tiny but ferocious mother. “Sorry, mom!” he says, not looking back at her.
“I’m sure they’re wonderful, Cami.” I turn and smile at her as she fixes her wild bed head in her compact mirror. She winks over the small plastic mirror and goes back to her sprucing up.
The only other people joining us on this trip are Gram, Aunt Mags, Alexa, and Neo. The reunion is with Camilla’s distant family and I’ve been told they do it every 3 years. Gram always joins, even though Camilla isn’t her natural daughter, and I love that about her.
I’m glad Neo is here so I don’t have to be the only newbie in the group. I also feel bad that he has to meet so many people so fast, considering he is one of the least social people I know. His feelings for Alexa have already changed him this week though.
I look behind me again at Neo and Alexa who are both fast asleep, even as the plane lands with a bump. Neo has his hands behind his head and his mouth hanging open, surprisingly not snoring. Alexa’s head rests on Neo’s chest and she looks like an adorable resting nature child with her messy red curls and the yellow flower in her hair.
Gavin nudges me. “Why do you suddenly look so happy?” he asks me with a smile of his own.
I lay my head on the seat behind me and sigh. “I just feel like things are going to work out. Like maybe fate is on our side. It’s a good feeling.” I look into his shining golden eyes.
Gavin leans toward me and kisses me softly on the top of my nose. “Fate brought us together, Aella. I trust it completely now.”
