it. She heard Frank’s cruel laugh and a feeling of dread overcame her. Grasping hands reached out from the fog, and his head, complete with gashed neck, shot out in front of her. Alice recoiled and tried to stop her forward movement, but her efforts had no effect. Frank reached out with those strong arms, that she once thought were so protective. Alice closed her eyes and begged for forgiveness. Suddenly, Frank’s arms fell away and another figure appeared out of the mist. A figure she recognised instantly.

‘You finally got here then, Alice Hussy.’

Alice gasped and then screamed. ‘AMY!’

Amy laughed. ‘We’ve been waiting for you for so long, we began to think you’d never get here.’

She took hold of Alice’s hands and pulled her forward, away from the grasping arms, away from that broken neck, away from that hideous laugh which had now morphed into a beaten, howl of frustration. Alice didn’t look back. All those nightmares were, literally, behind her now, and it was Amy, blessed, beautiful Amy that had come to claim her and lead her into the light.

She was dressed in her best white summer dress, the one she was so proud of. She wore her black patent, shoes, the pair she loved to dance in. Alice looked down at her own feet, to see her favourite Oxford heels. Her tatty old dressing gown was gone, and she was wearing her favourite polka-dot frock, and her famous Rita Hayworth, chestnut curls, hung around her shoulders. She hugged Amy and they wept tears of unbridled joy. Inseparable in life, they now had all of eternity to look forward to.

Amy pulled away from the hug, and still holding Alice’s hands, she walked backwards, leading Alice on. ‘People are waiting,’ she whispered.

Alice looked past Amy, to see her mother and father holding hands, looking as much in love as they ever did. And there was Miriam, and Barney, Benny and the rest of her farm lads. They clapped and shouted to her. ‘Nice to see you again, Missis.’

As she wiped away more tears, she heard music. Begin the Beguine was playing. Amy grinned and held out her arms. Alice took hold of one of her hands, put the other on her waist in her own, adventurous, style, and together they danced into the light.
