He hadnât finished the sentence before the roadrunner was standing in front of him, rigidly at attention. âYessir Tech wouldnât wanna run out without all my gear in proper working order whatâs wrong with it?â
âJust need to tweak something here.â He watched Revâs monitor until the green circle of his fingertip covered the screen, and he felt the roadrunnerâs breathing against it. âBe careful,â he said under his breath, rubbing gently.
âAlways am donât you worry,â Rev whispered, with a wink and a lopsided grin, and before Duck could get his pained exclamation out, Rev was at his side, talking more loudly. âCâmon Duck whaddya say thereâs evil out there for us to take care of so letâs get on the move.â
Duck looked pointedly at Tech. âIs my camera working okay?â
âItâs fine,â Tech said.
âStop stalling and get out there,â Ace said.
âStalling? I am not the one who is stalling,â Duck said. âTech justâŠâ
âI was right here,â Ace said. âI know what he did. Now get!â
âBut you donât⊠gah!â Duck threw up his arms and fitted his arms into his flying cape, which automatically billowed out behind him. âFor a leader, you sure donât know much.â
âLess chat, more scat,â Lexi said, getting her own flyer on. âCome on, Duck.â
As they crowded into the airlock, Tech heard Duck say, âI am a duck, not a cat. You donât say âscatâ to a duckâŠâ The airlock doors closed, unfortunately, before Tech could hear what one did say to a duck.
âHey, Tech,â Ace said. âDo you think Duckâs been acting a little strange lately?â
âJust lately?â Tech grinned.
âStranger than usual, I mean.â
âI havenât noticed. But then, I try not to notice him.â
Ace cocked a finger in his direction. âGood point.â He flicked a switch on his own console and set one of Techâs hovering microphones in front of him. âDuck, Rev, Lexi, can you hear me?â
âLoud and clear, boss.â
âNo problems here but I gotta say North Haverbrook is a dump donât these people have any civic pride I almost tripped a dozen times already.â
âI think they got other things on their mind than garbage detail right now, Rev. Duck? You there?â
There was a pause, and then over the speakers: âYes, Iâm here.â
âHeâs on the roof of that apartment building a mile away. Rev, youâŠâ
âAlready on it chief I got the location locked in and as long as there isnât a couch in the street or something we should be there in about ten seconds.â
âTâanks for slowinâ down for Duck and Lexi.â Ace grinned. âHowâs the cameras woikinâ, Tech?â
Tech had been looking only at Revâs, cringing as every obstacle in the street appeared and vanished. He felt like he were playing some old-time video game where he was a passenger rather than the driver of a racecar. If he hadnât left his Freeze-Frame Specs in the lab, he couldâve put them on, though of course then he would miss most of what Rev was seeing. âTheyâre working fine,â he said.
âLet me know when Duckâs in position.â
âMake sure Rev gets there first,â Tech said. âAnd hope the guy doesnât have eyes in the back of his head.â
âRight. Slam?â The devil looked up. âGet ready to jet over there in case we need to bring down the building heâs in. I donât wanna do that, but if we have toâŠâ
âRah guh rah!â Slam agreed.
Tech went back to watching Revâs monitor, ducking as the view darted through streets and alleys. âAce, tell Rev to vary his speed, too. If he keeps a constant velocity, the guy could anticipate where heâll be.â
Ace relayed that, and Rev chattered back, âThanks for the tip Ace but no way is anyone gonna be able to tell where Iâm gonna be heck I donât even know from one second to the next.â
âTech saysâŠâ
âOh Tech said it sure thing sorry didnât realize.â The view on the monitor became more jerky instantly, as Rev speeded up and slowed down, in addition to darting from side to side.
âThatâs better,â Tech said.
Ace gave Tech a mock-angry look. âI know youâre da brains, but does he have ta rub it in like that?â
âTheyâre getting close,â Tech said. He was having difficulty remaining focused. He wanted to view Rev as just a teammate doing a job, but he kept remembering the roadrunnerâs touch on his stomach, the beak against his muzzle, and when he remembered, he worried that Rev was going to put himself in danger with his cocky attitude.
âI see the building going to go make some noise now,â Rev said over the speaker. His monitor went crazy, disorienting Tech until he realized that Rev was running up the side of the building across the street from the shooter. They could hear him yelling, âHey ugly betcha canât hit me can you I bet youâre as blind as you are stupid!â
The coyoteâs eyes flicked to Duckâs camera, showing the top of the apartment building a mile or so away. âAce, tell Duck to get closer. I canât see anything.â
âDuck, get closer.â
âIâm working on it!â Duck squawked back. His monitor blinked out and back several times, bringing him, by Techâs calculation, about thirty-one feet closer. âHowâs that?â
Rev was still chattering. âWhoops missed me boy you sure are no good with that peashooter are you whatâcha shooting anyway blanks?â He lowered his voice to say, âHey Ace how much longer I gotta do this for?â
Ace looked at Tech for his answer. âHeâs gotta get on the roof, even if itâs just for a second,â the coyote said.
âDuck, or Rev?â
Tech paused. Rev could certainly get up to the roof, even if just for a fraction of a second, and he was more likely to do it than Duck. Tech could always rewind his monitor footage and pause it to see the info he needed in
