âIâve already heard your praises sung, Mrs. Barnsley,â chuckled Adalyn.
The older woman poured the tea, and then bent to the oven, whisking out two pies topped with crisp brown pastry. The fragrance made Adalynâs mouth water.
âHere yâare, then. Letâs give it a bit to cool down, otherwise itâll burn yer tongue somethinâ fierce.â She put one pie on the table, along with cutlery and plates.
âIâm going to be terribly spoiled here, I know it,â sighed Adalyn.
âYer looks like yer need some spoilinâ mâLady, if yerâll forgive an old womanâs blunt words.â Mrs. Barnsley sat down and pushed tea cups toward Daniel and Adalyn. âTiny as a bird, yâare. Need some meat on yer bones if yer goinâ ter manage Wolfbridge.â
Adalyn grinned over her teacup. âIâm stronger than I look. And Iâve seen several very industrious young ladies helping keep the Manor in order.â She looked at Mrs. Barnsley. âWould any of them be yours?â
âAye,â she nodded. âI got two of âem up at Manor.â
Daniel looked up at that. âLizzieâs old enough now?â
âTimeâs a passinâ, lad. Lizzie turned sixteen this month. Past time to earn her keep.â
âI had no idea,â he shook his head.
âMr. B. anâ I been blessed with five children, mâLady. Lizzieâs our youngest. She and Mary do up at Manor, Jane lives south of here, traininâ ter be a Ladyâs maid, and the lads are in the fields. Mr. B., beinâ as heâs gettinâ on in years, puts in his time in more of a supervisory capacity, he says.â She shrugged. âFancy way of sayinâ tellinâ lads what ter do.â
âIâm sure heâs very good at it, too.â Adalyn finished her tea. ââTis good to have a knowledgeable eye overseeing matters.â
âYer right about that, mâLady.â Mrs. Barnsley turned to Daniel. âAnd while Iâm thinkinâ about it, heâd like a quick word with yer, Daniel. Somethinâ about plantinâ.â
Daniel nodded. âIs he around today?â
âShould be.â
âIâll find him then.â Daniel turned to Adalyn. âI wonât be very long. Will you mind?â
âOf course not,â Adalyn laughed. âAnd I promise to leave you a little of the pie.â
Daniel laughed back and shook a finger at her. âYouâd better. Iâm counting on it.â
Left to their own devices, the two women looked at each other, then grinned and began to carve the pie.
It was difficult to hold back a moan of pleasure, thought Adalyn, as her taste buds exploded with the sensation of tart gooseberry, a dash of spices and meltingly wonderful buttery pastry. âOh my goodness,â she mumbled. âHeaven. Just heaven.â
âI knew yerâd like it.â Mrs. Barnsley smiled. âNow then, lass. Just us. Yer got questions, Iâll be bound.â
Adalyn blinked. âHow did you know?â
âThey all do, dearie. Iâve been here nigh on thirty years now. Seen my fair share of Wolfbridge ladies. So yer go right on and ask whatever yer want. Between us women.â
A mouthful of pie and a second cup of teaâŠand Adalyn decided to take Mrs. Barnsley up on her offer.
âAll right. Why donât any of the women live at the Manor? Why is it just men?â
The older woman nodded. âYes. Thatâs usually the first thing they want ter know. Well, it goes back a long time ter one of the earliest of the Wolfbridge women. Mebbe even the first one. All by herself in the manor, and in days when men had all the power, and women none of it. The poor lass was besieged by men wantinâ her for the land, pretendinâ affection, tryinâ to woo her into surrender. Driven nearly to distraction, she was. The one man she would have acceptedâwell he was after seducinâ one of the maids, behind the ladyâs back. A babe on the way sort of thing. Broke her heart, âtis said. All his promises were empty. And after that? No more women livinâ on the premises, and she turned her back on all those suitors. Made it a legal rule of the place, she did.â
âGoodness. I can understand her feelings, I suppose.â
âShe stayed unwed for a good many years. One oâ the longest-lastinâ at Wolfbridge. I think she may have been the one ter start hirinâ a unique set of men.â
âAfter that kind of heartbreak, Iâm surprised she thought of it. I might have kept my staff to all women. At least thereâd be no chance of anyone betraying my affections.â
Mrs. Barnsley leaned forward. âBetween yer and me, lass, I also think itâs got somethinâ ter do with the lads. They like havinâ their mistress ter themselves. And there hasnât been a mistress complaininâ or tryinâ ter change them rules once they got set up. Ever.â She turned her pie plate around, absently, as if in thought. âThe Wolfbridge lads are special, yâknow.â Her face was earnest now as she gazed at Adalyn. âTheyâre all about takinâ real good care of their Lady. Thereâs nothinâ they wonât do fer her; sheâs their life, in a way.â
âIâm starting to see that,â agreed Adalyn. âItâsâŠa little unsettling at times.â
Mrs. Barnsley smiled. âIâll agree ter that. Them lovely men just fallinâ over themselves ter help yerâŠmust be hard ter know which way ter turn.â
âDo anyâŠerâŠhave any of the Wolfbridge women everâŠI donât know quite how to askâŠâ
âYou mean any of the ladies have a go at it with the men?â
âUm, yes,â Adalyn blushed. âI think thatâs what I mean?â
âI should bloody well hope so,â said Mrs. Barnsley bluntly. âWhatâs the point of all that carinâ when it donât go noplace? Wolfbridge ainât a convent. And if I werenât wed and past all that, Iâd not mind being up there and havinâ a bit of it myself.â
Swallowing, Adalyn managed a weak smile. âBut how does one choose?â
Mrs. Barnsley grinned, a curve of her lips that managed to be both wicked and wistful. âI wouldnât. Iâd try âem all.â
Adalyn gasped, but at that moment Daniel came back into the kitchen, and her words dried up in her mouth.
âAll set,â he said, pulling out a chair and sitting down. âNow. About
