âAre you suggesting what I think youâre suggesting? A one-night stand?â
Maeve licks her lips. I adjust my cock under the table. Sighing, she says, âYou canât do casual, and I canât do serious. I hate to bring a child into this, but if Iâm going to keep seeing Turner as my patient, and by proxy, you, multiple times a week, this needs to go away and I think thereâs only one way to put it to bed.â Her smile is soft. âTrust me, itâs not what I want either, but sometimes you have to do things for the greater good.â
Because of the insane attraction between us, it isnât a horrible idea. A man would be shocked anytime a woman suggested something so⊠meaningless, though. It goes against nature, or what Iâve experienced of the opposite sex, in every way. âYou think that whatever attraction we have for each other is going to go away if we fuck one time? Dr. Ahern, I didnât take you for a fool.â I grin.
âIâm offering the lowest possible solution.â Maeve is watching my lips through narrowed eyes.
My next breath lodges in my throat. âMaeve,â I say her name, and it comes out like a plea. âThereâs something else you should know.â
For the first time since we sat down, her face belies something other than lust or sympathy. âThis is where you tell me something really horrible. The first story was just a cover for what comes next, huh?â
I peer around the room to make sure no one is tuned into our conversation. âIâm celibate.â Clearing my throat, I steel my nerves to look at her.
Maeve is tapping one finger against the wooden table as she examines me, but she doesnât respond.
âSay something,â I prod.
She smiles. âIâm trying to figure out how to ask what that means. Specifics-wise, I mean. Obviously I know what it means in Merriam-Webster.â
âYou just asked.â I grin, nodding. âSpecifically, it means I havenât been with a woman in any capacity since⊠Turnerâs mom.â
Now I have her attention, her eyes widen in shock. âThat has to be it. Thatâs the draw. You truly are an impossibility. Now in more ways than one.â Maeve shakes her head. âYouâre Pandoraâs Box. Midas. The candy dangling in front of a baby.â
I scrub my fingers over the scruff on my jaw. âAre you the baby?â
âHow?â She ignores my rhetorical question in favor of exploring her shock.
I canât blame her. Men like me arenât celibate. And I donât just mean Navy SEALs with all the means to snag any chick we want, I mean single men my age in general.
âHow is that possible?â
My chest tightens. âFigured it would be best.â
âThatâs why you said you donât date,â she says, face pointed at the table in front of her. Her head whips up to me. âSo, what is this?â Maeve motions between us again.
âSomething too potent to deny, Maeve. Wouldnât you agree?â
She looks away. âI canât be the downfall of a streak that long, Lincoln.â She amends, âAssuming youâd want to have sex with me in the first place, that is.â
I scoff. âYouâre kidding, right?â I lower my voice. âI want to have sex with you. More than want.â
âItâs just on principle, and not some born again virgin thing? I need more information.â
I sigh. âDefinitely on principle, and because it simplified an area of my life I didnât have time for. I have a lot going on, and dating wasnât something I had energy for. The things that happen after dating and sex? Definitely didnât have time for that.â I make a rash decision and lay my hand on top of hers. âBut I also never had a reason to want to either.â
Maeve jerks from my touch, but doesnât make a move to pull away.
âI asked you out because I couldnât stop myself.â Swallowing down my nerves, I might as well tell her. âYouâre a game-changer, Maeve.â
After a beat or two, she asks, âCan we do casual without sex, but with commitment?â
I widen my eyes. âThatâs a peculiar question. Isnât it usually casual with sex and without commitment?â
She shrugs and pulls her hand from mine. I see her rubbing her palm in her lap. âIt is, but this situation between us doesnât leave much to negotiate, does it?â She closes her eyes for a second or two. âI wonât be the reason you break your streak, and you canât be the reason I fall for a man again. So that leaves us with the in-between.â
âI need more information,â I counter, using her phrase. Interesting that she says she doesnât want to fall for a man again. At all. Thatâs pretty black and white, and⊠negative.
âIâm not seeing anyone else and from what I can tell, neither are you. Thereâs the commitment. As for this insane attraction between us, we get creative and⊠everything but sex.â Maeve chews her bottom lip. âUnless âeverything butâ would still break your celibacy?â
âIt wouldnât,â I cut in quickly. Mostly because Iâd take anything this woman is offering, but it seems sheâs devised a plan we can both live with and I wonât say anything against it. Thinking about kissing her is enough to make me fuck air in anticipation. I wonât tell her that everything but sex probably wonât be everything but when weâre in the heat of the moment. âIt wouldnât be breaking anything. I agree. Letâs do it. Yes. Please.â
âThat was fast,â she says, grinning, but it slides into a frown. âLincoln.â After she says my name, she draws in a breath. âThis isnât because youâre like Rexy. I need you to know that Iâm not starting anything with you because you remind me of him. I thought it might have been why, but now I know for a fact that it has nothing to do with the lure of my past.â Itâs sad she
