He spotted her immediately and took long strides to the booth, sliding in and placing both palms on the table, as if to keep his emotions down. âWhere the hell have you been?â
âThatâs not important,â she said calmly. âWhat matters is that I know where youâve been.â
His pale brown eyebrows knit. âWhat are you talking about?â
âI saw you last night, Todd.â She kept her voice void of emotion, and it wasnât difficultâshe suddenly felt so indifferent toward him. She couldnât believe sheâd ever agreed to marry someone who clearly held her in such little regard. âI saw you at Club Venus.â
His mouth dropped open. He ran a hand back through his hair, took a moment to think. âOkay, yes, I was at Club Venus last night. A little happy hour with some guys from workâno big deal. We finished the project we were working on, so decided to reward ourselves. I was going to tell you when I got home, but you werenât there.â
Liz released a tired sigh. What a liar. Sheâd have to be more direct. âOkay, how about this? I saw you pay a woman to dance naked in your lap. And I know that two nights beforeâand probably every night for the last two monthsâyou indulged heavily in that particular pastime. I know because I thought you were having an affair, so I hired someone to follow you.â
Now his eyes were as round as plates, gaping at her blankly. She decided to take the opportunity to press onward.
âIâm breaking off the engagement, Todd.â Sheâd taken off her ring before last night, but sheâd worn it to work today specifically so she could return it to him. Slipping it off her left hand, she laid it in the center of the table.
âLet me get this straight,â he finally said, sounding a bit manic. âYouâre breaking off our engagement because Iâve gone to a strip club a few times to unwind after work?â He said it like she was crazy and unreasonable, as if he hadnât lied to her, as if it had indeed only been a few times. And as if getting lap dance after lap dance without having mentioned it was a perfectly acceptable way to run an engagement.
âWell, actually, thereâs more to it than that,â she said. âFor one thing, Iâve realized I donât love you, and for another, Iâve met someone else. But neither of those things probably would have happened if you hadnât started lying about working late so that naked women could wiggle around in your lap, so I guess that going to a strip club to âunwindâ did indeed lead to this.â
Todd looked absolutely livid. âYouâre seeing another man? Cheating on me?â
She gasped her disbelief. âNot before I found out what you were up to, so donât act as if youâve been wronged.â
âWho the hell is it? Iâll kill him.â
She rolled her eyes. Compared to Jack, Todd was scrawny. âThat doesnât matter,â she said, getting back her composure. âThe important thing is that our engagement is over.â She looked at the ring sheâd placed between them. âYouâd better put that in your pocket before it gets lost.â
Todd began shaking his head. âNo, I wonât accept that ring, Elizabeth.â She cringedâsheâd always hated that Todd insisted on calling her that, and she suddenly hated it even more now; it sounded so Puritan. âBecause weâre not breaking up.â
Another sigh of exhaustion escaped her. âWe just did.â
âNo, you canât break up with me, I wonât let you. Weâre going to have the perfect life together and I still intend to have it. Weâll be fine, youâll see. Youâll just have to be patient with me.â
She had no idea what he was blathering on about. She shook her head. âWhat? Patient with you?â
He nodded. âOkay, Iâll admit it. Iâm having trouble not wanting other women. But youâll just have to be patient while I get those feelings out of my system. Thatâs why Iâve been going to Club Venus, darling, for you. So that I can go into our marriage with a pure heart and wonât ever have to cheat on you.â
âDear God.â She almost laughed. Did he actually think that explanation would make things better?
Then again, maybe he was so accustomed to the old, complacent Liz that heâd thought he could get away with anything.
Well, she was tired of arguing with him about whether or not he âacceptedâ her breaking up with him. Sheâd hoped they could have a civil discussion about this, maybe work out living arrangements over lunch, but clearly sheâd been too optimistic. âLook, Todd, weâre through. Understand?â
He shook his head vehemently. âNo, weâre not. Weâre going to have the perfect life, you and I. Youâre supposed to be my perfect wife.â
âWhat?â she said, confused by his rambling.
âThe first night I took you home to meet my parents, my dad pulled me aside and said, âSheâs the one, son, the one whoâll make a perfect wife for you.â And I realized he was right. Youâre going to make a wonderful mother to our children, Elizabeth, and you always handle every situation appropriately, and you listen to what I say and do what I wantâŠâ His eyebrows knit tightly again. âOr at least you used to.â
God, heâd wanted to marry her because she was a doormat. And because his daddy had given her his seal of approvalâprobably because he recognized what a Stepford Wife she would make, as well. Liz let the tiniest smile leak free, wondering what Toddâor his fatherâwould think if they could have seen her last night. Would they have found it âappropriateâ for her to get a lap dance? Would they think it was âappropriateâ for her to get fucked on an open balcony for anyone to see while she begged her lover for more?
âYou know what, Todd?â she said with a knowing smile. âIf you knew the real me, youâd never want to marry me. So trust me,
