âYes.â
âThese eight were some of them. What if the others are on there, but weâve never seen their picture?â
Ice poured into Joâs veins at that suggestion. She looked at the eight pictures all in Rianâs clan.
âI mean we had Kain who left and Tigerfanââ
âOh, and Dummie,â Evan added.
âWere those three you mentioned in other countries?â
âWell, Dummie was in Germany. KainâI think he was in England. Tiger was in Finland or Thailand? Iâm not sure about him exactly. They were really private which is cool, but it means we canât help you too much with the question.â
Jo needed to talk to her team. âRian, why donât you and Evan go grab the fruit Marta chopped up for dessert.â
âWith whip cream?â Rain stood bouncing on the balls of his feet.
âSure. Thereâs a can in the door. Eat it in the kitchen and wash your hands and face after.â
Both boys headed for the door, and Jo waited until she couldnât hear them in the hall before she turned to the others.
âEight out of twelve are in their clan.â She didnât think that was a coincidence. Especially, considering this game had over a million players.
âAnd all twelve are now confirmed as playing that game.â Maker noted the fact next to each victim.
âYou know itâs not out of the realm of possibility if the boys know eight of the twelve, they probably know all twelve,â Karma added.
Jo groaned. âRhys is going to kill me.â
âCan you imagine going from over a million to three hundred? It would narrow the suspect list down a great deal.â Sullivan stuck a screenshot of the game up on the corkboard.
âBlair, do you think some of your contacts could get us members lists if we narrow the group down to three hundred?â Jo asked.
âMaybe. Itâd be better if we could get it to a smaller number if possible.â
âDefine smaller,â Redden said.
âLess than a hundred.â
âOkay, when the boys get back. How about we ask them about the friends that left the game? They said they had several that disappeared. So we start there. Thatâs got to be less than a hundred,â Maker stated.
Another thought hit Jo, and she pointed to Redden and Blair. âYou two are staying at the Sheraton, right?â
âUh-huh.â Confusion pulled their brows into a frown.
âIf we have a call-out or a break, itâll take too long to get from downtown to here.â
âWhatâre you suggesting?â
âGo and get your bags and you can stay in the guestrooms upstairs.â
âYou sure?â Redden asked. âYou and I havenât always gotten along.â
Jo waved him away. âI wouldnât have asked if I wasnât sure. Itâll cut down on a lot of travel time and you two can still work the case while the rest of us work our day jobs.â
Karma snorted and shook her head. âListen, Maker and I need to head out. We have to run down a pusher near Woodlawnââ
âThe Vice case?â
âYeah, itâs one of Dadâs contacts, so weâre not telling anyone in case the guy flakes out.â Karma shrugged into her leather jacket.
âGot it.â Jo didnât like dealing with many of her bio-dadâs contacts as most of them were people not even the street scum would talk to. âBe careful.â
âWill do,â Karma said and turned to Blair. âAnd donât think Iâve forgotten about movies and dinner tomorrow night.â
âJust pick me up here when youâre ready.â His brown eyes twinkled as he and Redden followed Maker and Karma out the door.
Redden leaned back in. âWeâll be back in about an hour.â
âOkay.â
Then it was just her and Sullivan, which Jo liked much better.
âWhen is Rhys due home?â
Jo slipped her cell from her pocket. âThere was a wreck on highway 280, and the last text I have is âIâll be late. Donât wait up.ââ
âHow do you want to handle Rian and Evan?â Sullivan sprawled in the seat Redden vacated.
Just then Evan and Rian returned and scooted around the table.
âRian, can you and Evan give us a list of the friends that havenât logged in recently?â
Evan hummed. âYou know itâd be better if we gave you a list of those who left the clan and then left the game.â
âWhy would that be better?â
âBecause these eight people left our clan to join other clans and then left the game.â
Joâs heart sped up as she met Sullivanâs gaze. This could not be tied that closely to Rian. That would mean someone tied to their clan was killing people and the people dying were also their friends. At a loss for words, she was glad her partner stepped in.
âCan I ask if you recognize this person?â Sullivan pulled out a photo of Mark.
Evan gasped. âThatâs our previous clan owner. He left our clan almost six years ago to start a bossing clan and like five months later he never logged in again.â
Jo rubbed her temple and checked the time. âYour mom is going to be here soon to pick you up. Can you get us a list of everyone who left your clan?â
âSure.â Evan turned to Rian. âIâll send you the spreadsheet, and we can go through it together when I get home. That way if I miss something, youâll catch it.â
âSounds like a plan.â Rian closed his laptop and stored it in its case, and Evan did the same.
Jo helped Sullivan finish up the board as the boys talked behind them.
âOh, donât forget to add QueenAmethyst and Spacedog when you make the list,â Rian said.
âI was glad when they left.â
âMe too,â Rian agreed.
That drew Joâs attention. Rian liked everyone. There were few people he didnât immediately befriend. It was part of his bright personality. But these two he didnât like. âWhy?â
âBecause theyâre hi-level bridge trolls,â Evan replied.
Confused, Jo looked to Sullivan but found the same befuddled frown on his face.
âI donât understand.â Jo stepped over to the table.
âWell, like a bridge troll. Theyâre kind of sneaky hiding under the bridge, so you donât see theyâre a troll until youâre already out on the shaky bridge. Then they jump out and kill you
