After making his decision he slowly walked back to the edge of the bed. He drank in every nuance and detail of her delicate features. In that one brief moment, he allowed himself simply to feel without thought or sensor. He brushed a light kiss on her forehead. "Forgive me, little one."
It was enough to know she was on Ki. As long as she remained on his world, he would be able to find her no matter where she went. He would be able to find her.
Chapter Four
Kaily bolted upright in bed, her eyes darted from one corner to another of the room. Her breath caught in her throat, and her heart pounded so hard against her chest she thought it would explode. She leaned forward to see the other parts of the room hard to see from the bed. She sat uneasily back against the headboard and hugged her knees to her chest. The room was empty. For the past week she woke in like manner before dawn began to light the sky. Every time she believed someone stood in the room with her, and every single time she would find it empty upon waking. Everything undisturbed, and just as she left it the previous night.
None of the doors to and from the bedchamber possessed locks of any kind, not even crossbars. Who would build a damn castle with doors that didn't have a crossbar? They did, and she couldn't secure the doors. She would push the two chairs in the room against two of the doors. They were too heavy for her to move. She didn't feel safe. She found it difficult to fall asleep. When she did finally fall asleep it was so deep, she didn't dream. In fact, she dreamt of nothing including her dark warrior since she arrived in that damn place. She chided herself for missing those dreams. It wasn't real. In truth, she still didn't know for sure. At the moment, nothing felt real to her. At times Kaily wondered if she lost touch with reality and lay in a hospital somewhere being feed medications which kept her trapped within the confines of her own mind and this world. But too many minute details convinced her it very much was real. Her imagination couldn't supply those kinds of details even in her most delirious state. She didn't have an imagination.
She shook her head in an attempt to clear her disturbing thoughts and unease. Her eyes darted from one end of the room to the other. She couldn't shake the feeling someone had been in the room, and yet her eyes told her otherwise. Everything in its place. She would notice a door opening and closing, she hoped. She slept too deep for her comfort. She was afraid someone might sneak in and she wouldn't know until too late. She felt fear, all the time.
She ran a tired hand through her hair and attempted to calm her pounding heart. She pulled the bed covers up over her bare arms. A chill in the room made it feel far colder than the room should be. The type of cold that sent a shiver down Kaily's spine. Something felt not quite right. She couldn't just ignore the feeling, but neither could she give in to imagined fears. She felt enough real fears to deal with she didn't need to add imagined ones. She knew it was the lack of sleep that feed her paranoia. She felt she hadn't slept in so long she didn't think she would feel rested again, despite the fact that only a week passed. It felt like an eternity.
The past week she spent as much time in the library, the room she first arrived in, for as long as she could stomach. The time didn't amount to as much as she needed. She would stay until she felt first pangs of suffocation. Something inside her clawed to get out. She would flee back to the bed chamber and either stare mindlessly into the flames of the fire or out the window. She never liked closed in spaces, and the gruesome tapestry didn't help. It, in part, added to her claustrophobic feeling and fear. She didn't venture out beyond those two rooms. She was afraid to. Jaren didn't dissuade her fears.
The bedchamber was not as stifling as the library. Not that if felt comforting, but it was larger. The window alcove helped, if it could be called that. It was small for an alcove. Still, she preferred it to anywhere else in that room. It afforded a small ledge wide enough to sit on, but not quite wide enough to be called a window seat. Fresh air drifted in when she opened the shutters wide. She felt as if she might be able to breathe. At least in part. She didn't know how she got there or how to get back to her beloved Scotland. She thought the doorway had something to do with her being there, but not the how of it.
Her only contact was with Jaren and the two serving women she encountered her first day. The women cleaned her room, made the bed, drew her baths, and laid out that day's attire properly. They brought meals in the morning and evening, most of which she hardly touched. Through all of this, neither women spoke to her which Kaily preferred. She wouldn't know what to say to them. The underclothing and dresses didn't require assistance to get in or out of, so she could bath and dress in peace. She preferred her jeans and bulky sweater, but upon a thorough search of the bedchamber, those items couldn't be found. She would have liked some comforts from home to help calm her panic and fear. They increased in intensity with each passing day.
Strange that from appearances she landed in some kind of medieval castle with knights and all, but at
