He nodded at her. âBut you canât get the price, can you? Everyoneâs fuckinâ at it out there, growing their own. Make it legal and the bleedinâ price goes through the floor.â He looked back at me. âWhat do you want, then, if youâre not vice?â
âWhat can you tell me about Luis Irizarry?â
He frowned a moment, then his face cleared. âOh, that wanker! Luis.â He shrugged. âNot a lot. Thinks heâs a fuckinâ cut above everybody else just âcause heâs a doctor. That, and heâs got his fuckinâ sights on my girlâŠâ
Dehan said, âYour girl?â
âYeah, my girlfriend, you knowâŠâ
âYeah, I know what a girl is, Jack. Who is she? Whatâs her name?â
He narrowed his pale blue eyes. âWhy dâyou wanna know that? Whatâs she got to do with anything?â
I raised my eyebrows at him and tilted my head on one side. âJust answer the question, Jack. Alternatively, we can do this by the book down at the station, record the interview, get a warrantâŠâ
âAll right, all right. Lynda, Lynda Graham. But she ainât involved in nothing dodgy. Sheâs a nice girl, got a proper job, nice house. I help her out with the rent a bitâŠâ
I nodded. âThatâs good of you, Jack. So, what I hear you saying is that you are making a commitment to Lynda.â
He got a far away look in his eyes and smiled. âI suppose I am. Sheâs the kind of girl what might make you take a look at your life, know what I mean? Think twice about the direction youâre taking anâ that.â
âIâm glad to hear it because, my friend, let me tell you, where you are headed right now is not anywhere you want to be, especially if you are thinking of getting serious about a woman. If you have, in that basement, what I think you have in that basement, you are looking at a long sentence. By the time you get out, Lynda could be married and with kids.â
He became serious. âI know. I was never doing it in a big way. Itâs justâŠâ
âRelax, I can see youâre cooperating.â I gave him a man-to-man, lopsided grin. âMust have made you mad to see Luis coming on to your girl, am I right?â
He sagged back into the sofa. âHeâs not fuckinâ serious, is he? To him itâs all a big fuckinâ larf. Lifeâs one big bleedinâ party. And Lynda loves a party, donât she? So sheâs well up for it! And I donât mind that. I ainât the bleedinâ jealous type. But she donât realize he only wants her for one thing. Me, Iâm in for the long haul, ainât I? I want a commitment.â
âWhen was the last time you saw Luis, Jack?â
âLast night. Why?â
âWhere was that?â
âItâs what Iâm tellinâ you. I went âround to Lyndaâs place. She only lives âround the corner, I knocks on the door, and I can hear fuckinâ music and laughing inside. I go in and thereâs fuckinâ Luis and a mate of his, sitting there drinking beer with my girl, in the house what Iâm paying the rent forâŠâ
âMust have made you pretty crazy.â
He shrugged. âWell, you know, thereâs a fuckinâ limit, ainât there?â
âSo what did you do?â
âI told her, her and me needed to have a serious talk, âcause I ainât payinâ the rent on her bleedinâ house so she can entertain gentlemen there. I mean, I ainât fuckinâ stupid. So she has to decide whether she is serious or not.â He frowned. âHere, whatâs this about? You didnât come here to play fuckinâ agony aunt to me, did you?â
I smiled. âNot really, Jack. Weâre almost done. Just tell me where you went and what you did after you left Lyndaâs house.â
âI come home, got a take away pizza, and watched a movie.â His frown deepened. âWhy? Iâve played straight with you guys, I have a right to know what youâre questioning me about.â
Dehan said, âWhere were you between two and three AM last night?â
Now he looked alarmed. âI was here, on my couch, asleep. And I ainât sayinâ another word till you tell me what this is about.â
âSo you have no one who can vouch for youâŠâ
âI ainât got a fuckinâ alibi, if thatâs what youâre askinâ. But I didnât fuckinâ know Iâd need one. I played fair and square with you anâ you led me into a fuckinâ trap! That ainât right!â
âLuis was shot last night.â
âOh, fuckin âell!â
I said, âDo you own a gun, Jack?â
He turned on me. âNo, of course I donât own a fuckinâ gun! I ainât a fuckinâ Yank, am I?â He stopped himself, closed his eyes, and took a deep breath. âSorry, I didnât mean that the way it sounded. Itâs just Iâm⊠Youâre scaring the livinâ fuckinâ daylights out of me. You know, we just donât go around shootinâ everybody the way you do!â
I heard Dehan snort and looked at her. She was suppressing a smile. Jack shrugged. âWell, you do a bit, donât you?â
âSo your defense is, âI didnât shoot him because I am British, and we donât do that kind of thingâ?â
âEnglish. And no, that isnât my defense. Am I under arrest? Do I need a defense? So far, your case against me seems to be that Iâm in love with a girl and Luis was flirting with her. You wanna do me for sellinâ weed, thatâs a fair cop. But if you want to stitch me up for a murderâŠâ He shook his head. âNo way, mate.â
I studied his face a moment. âWho said it was a murder?â
He laughed. âCome off it! You did. You said he was shot.â
I sighed. âHe was shot, he wasnât
