I’m not one of those guys who swoops in the second a girl gets her heart broken. At least, not anymore, I’m not. Tonight, I’m here as her friend. Even though all she sees me as is her enemy.

She returns with a bottle of beer and hands it to me.

“Thanks,” I say as I unscrew the cap.

As I take a sip, my eyes trace her steps as she walks over to a three-seater sofa and plops her ass onto the leather but not before grabbing her wine from the coffee table.

Still standing, I point my bottle around the cabin. “I can’t believe your dad built this. It’s awesome.”

I stray my eyes from her to take a proper look at the place. It’s almost the size of a large hotel room, and along with the compact corner kitchen and the small seating area with a television mounted to the wall, there is also a rustic wooden queen-size bed against the center of the wall. I notice a narrow hallway leading to another door.

“What’s through there?”

“It’s the bathroom.”

“Wow, he even had plumbing installed?”

She nods, smiling a little. “Yeah.” She huffs out a laugh. “When my dad gets something in that head of his, there’s no backing down. It took him almost a year to finish it.”

“That’s some dedication there,” I comment as I step toward the couch and sit beside Ally. “I take it, with how lived-in this place is, you’re staying out here?”

She shakes her head. “No, I sleep inside the house—when I can sleep, that is. I just like to relax in here. Even though it’s just my mom and dad, it can get a little crowded in the house. So, it’s nice to come out here and…” She trails off, leaving her sentence hanging. Then, she shakes her head. “I can’t believe that guy had the nerve to cheat on me. I’m so stupid.”

“You’re not stupid. He’s the stupid one.”

“You know, I’m not even really upset. I didn’t love him—hell, toward the end, I barely even liked him. I’m just so angry that he turned out to be like all the other guys. Just after one thing. And I’m pissed off at myself, too. I wasted three months in a relationship with him when I could have been…”

“You could have been what?” I ask, wanting to know the end of that sentence.

She just shakes her head and changes the subject. “You were right though.”

“About what?”

“The size of his dick. It was tiny.” She sips her wine, smirking around the glass.

“I thought you didn’t have sex,” I point out.

“We didn’t, but I felt it up against me a few times when we made out. I’ve had fun-size Snickers bars that were bigger.”

I let out a snort. “I haven’t heard that analogy before.”

She shrugs her shoulders before taking another sip of her wine. “I’m exaggerating, but I’m glad I didn’t sleep with him.”

“I know it’s none of my business, but why didn’t you sleep with him?”

I expect her to reprimand me for asking such a personal question, but instead, her face stays neutral as she answers me, “I just wanted to build a relationship that wasn’t revolved around sex first. You know, have an emotional connection. I guess he was the wrong guy to try that with, considering you caught him fucking around on me. God!” she exclaims. “Why are guys such dicks? No offense,” she adds.

“None taken,” I say, taking a pull of my beer. “But to answer your question, I think we’re injected with something when we’re born. You know, to ensure all male species are assholes.”

“So, you agree? All men are assholes?”

“There’s no doubt about it.”

She watches me curiously for a moment before she suddenly throws her head back and starts laughing. “You know, you’re the most honest person I know. Most guys wouldn’t admit that.”

“But we do have our redeeming qualities.”

“We?”

“Okay, I have redeeming qualities.”

“Like what?” she asks with pure intrigue, her wide eyes watching me with amusement.

“I’m loyal, funny, smart, strong, and if you haven’t already noticed, I’m not exactly hard on the eyes,” I say with a cock of my head, piercing her with my dazzling stare. “Also, I promise, you wouldn’t be disappointed if I brushed up against you with my erection.”

Her sweet laugh fills the room, and just hearing that giggle makes me feel damn good. “That sure is a lot of redeeming qualities.”

“Well, I’ve been trying to tell you this for months, but you’ve been hell-bent on hating me since the second you locked eyes on me.”

“C’mon, you came on to me in, like, ten seconds flat. And then, in the same day, you asked me to give you a blow job in exchange for paying for the pizzas. I mean, dude, how I didn’t kick you in the balls that day was a miracle.”

I let out a deep laugh, almost swallowing my beer down the wrong pipe. “I was joking,” I say, coughing.

“So, you’re telling me, if I’d gotten down on my knees and sucked your dick, you’d have stopped me?”

I raise a brow. “As a guy who also has bad qualities, I’d have to say, no.”

She rolls her eyes, and the very move spreads warmth to my chest. “So, you weren’t joking?”

“What can I say? Men say stupid shit when there’s a beautiful woman around.”

Her cheeks turn a rosy shade of pink, and she points down to herself in her loungewear. “Not exactly at my most beautiful today.”

Now, it’s my turn to roll my eyes. “What are you talking about? You’re beautiful every day.”

She lets out a puff of air, staring at me like I’ve lost my damn mind. “I’m in my slob clothes, I don’t have a stitch of makeup on, and my eyes are probably still blotchy from my pathetic crying in the car on the way home. I’m so ugly right now.”

I twist in my seat to take her in, my eyes tracing over every inch of her, and nowhere in my assessment do I see an
