Forcing her eyes closed, Caitlin focused on her breathing, on Bookerâs heartbeat thrumming faintly in her ear.
Sheâd make it up to him in the morning, she decided.
In the light. When it would be easy to spot someone peeking into their room.

Greeting people as she passed, Caitlin headed for the teacherâs loungeâthe room designated for elected official meetings. If no one was inside, sheâd leave a note asking to speak to them.
About what yet she hadnât decided.
She didnât want to lodge a complaint, necessarily. She just needed to make someone else aware of the growing concern coiling in her gut every time she spotted Seth meandering through the halls or cafeteria.
David and Max were slowly making their way to Sister Agnesâ story time, Matilda toddling along in front of them, a hand in each of theirs.
âLook who it is, Maddie,â Max cooed. âAuntie Caitlin.â
She beamed, waving at the little girl. âHi sweetie, look at you walking!â
âSoon sheâll be running,â David said with a sigh. âAnd then climbing. And then Iâll never get a momentâs peace ever again.â
Max shushed him. âAt least sheâs got my sense of balance.â
âAnd sheâs also got your reckless nature.â
Slipping her hands into her back pockets, Caitlin smirked at the men.
âYou two are definitely married,â she said. âAnd definitely parents.â
Max chuckled. âIâll take that as a compliment.â
Just before they passed her, Caitlin jerked her chin at Max and asked, âActually, can I talk to you about something? It wonât take long.â
âSure,â he said, giving David a knowing look as he slid Matildaâs little fist into his hand.
Stepping over to the side of the corridor, Caitlin folded her arms and leaned a shoulder into the wall.
âYou look very serious,â Max commented.
Caitlin tried to smile but it felt like a wince.
âHow much do you know about Seth?â
Max frowned. âSeth⊠From the Iowa camp?â
âYeah.â
âNot much,â he admitted. âIâve only talked to him a handful of times. He was helping set up camp back in Oklahoma. Seemed friendly enough. Courteous.â
When Caitlin shifted uncomfortably, Max took note.
âWhy do I get the feeling youâve had a much different experience?â
Pushing her hair off her forehead, she let her gaze drift to the dusty bulletin board nearby advertising the end of school year jamboree.
âHe hasnât⊠done anything,â she said finally. âNot really. He just keeps popping up, and making these comments like⊠he thinks he knows me.â
Max waited for her to continue.
âI donât know, thereâs something in his tone. It feels⊠like heâs trying to lull me into a false sense of security.â
âIs this another âTed Bundy looked normal tooâ kinda thing?â
She smiled briefly at the memory. âMaybe. Iâm not sure. I feel ridiculous even bringing it up, but after last nightâŠâ
âWait, what happened last night?â
Her cheeks burned.
âUm, well.â She glanced over her shoulder, making sure no one was within earshot. âLast night, Booker and I were⊠being intimateâŠâ
Maxâs eyebrows shot up for a moment before he regained his composure.
âAnd I felt someone watching us.â
Immediately, he went from mildly embarrassed to horrified.
âSeth was watching you two have sex?â
Caitlin started to shake her head. âI donât know. I think. Maybe.â
âThatâs an awful lot of uncertainty.â
âI know in my bones someone was outside our door,â she said. âBut when we went to check, no one was out there. But Iâve run into Seth in the halls beforeâearly morning, no one else around, and heâs just lingering in a doorway, not making a sound.â
âHuh. Well, that is a little disconcerting,â Max said. âStill, that doesnât meanââ
âI know,â Caitlin cut in, sighing. âI just⊠Canât get a read on this guy. Itâs making me nervous.â
She looked over Maxâs shoulder to where David and Matilda were still making their way to the library.
âGeeks arenât the only things we have to worry about,â she added. âAnd I made a promise to myself Iâd do whatever I could to keep people safe. Theyâre my responsibility.â
Max reached for her, gently placing a hand on her forearm.
âYouâre not responsible for every person in this group, Caitlin. Why do you think we have an elected council? Voting? Itâs to keep the burden off the shoulders of one individual.â
Blinking back the sting of tears threatening to build, she held his stare.
âBooker and I brought these people out of the Arks,â she whispered roughly. âThey keep saying we rescued them, but really we just made them trade one hardship for another. What kind of person would I be if I just left them to the whims of fate?â
âYouâd be a human being,â Max told her, compassion softening his features. âAnd let me take this moment to remind you, that because you broke into those Arksâmaking people trade âone hardship for anotherââI have my husband and daughter back.â
A knot formed in Caitlinâs throat, and the more she tried to swallow it down, the firmer it lodged itself.
âWeâll never know which call is the right one,â Max continued. âBut from where Iâm standing, this decision feels pretty damn great. And Iâm never going to hold you liable for what happens to us next.â
Overwhelmed, all she could do was nod.
Giving her wrist a squeeze, Max smiled. âStop trying to appoint yourself as the Rejectâs Atlas. Your energy is better used elsewhere.â
It was the kindest thing anyone had said to her in a long time.
âThanks, Max,â she murmured.
At the end of the hall, David called out to them. âBetter hurry, Papa! Maddieâs outpacing you by a mile!â
Chuckling, Max turned and waved.
âGo,â Caitlin told him. âThanks for⊠Well, everything.â
âAnytime.â
She watched him jog across the polished tile, rejoining his family.
