“How democratic. If you get booted out, do you have to sleep in a tent?”
“No. The Kellys, Bairds, and Grants all have extra rooms, or you can ask for the Cabin. But Charlotte is particular about who stays there. I don’t know why. But if you get the key, you know you’re special.” She handed the clipboard to Ensley. “Pick a room and sign your name. And before you ask, they all have the same layout and the same furniture but are all decorated differently. And they all open up to a Monet-style garden. I recommend you start at Room One and work your way around each time you’re here. David and I like Room Three best, and if it’s available, we always stay there. It’s got the McCabe tartan flair to it that he likes.”
“Okay, I’ll take Room One.” Ensley signed and dated the form and then looked around the kitchenette. “I’m dying for some chocolate mint ice cream.”
“There’s ice cream in there, but I don’t know what kind. You can check after I give you the tour.” She crossed the room and opened another door. “This is the women’s closet. If you can’t find what you need, I’ll ask Charlotte. We raid her closet in emergencies, like when Elliott demands we dress for dinner.”
“I’d never feel comfortable invading her personal space.” Ensley stood in front of a rack of hanging dresses, shirts, and jackets and slowly swiped through them, checking sizes.
“I’ll leave you here,” Kenzie said. “Room One is across the hall. You’ll find visitors’ bags in the bathroom closet. The bags contain all the toiletries you’ll need. After you finish shopping in the women’s closet, take a long shower, and don’t worry about depleting the hot water tank. You can’t. David and I tried one night. Call me on the desk phone if you need me. Just dial 0-3.”
Ensley hugged her. “Thanks for everything.”
“I was new here once and know how it feels. Just make yourself at home.”
Kenzie left her to pick through the neatly folded running clothes, jog bras, shorts, and leggings. Ensley pulled out items to try on and found a drawer full of panties from Victoria’s Secret with the price tags still attached. “Man, what a closet.” There were also racks of shoes and boots, and she found running shoes and hiking boots to fit. Then she gathered up what she planned to wear on the airplane and crossed the hallway to Room One.
The white and pale green suite smelled like hyacinths. Double doors led to a private garden with a lily pond, and natural light filled the room with warmth.
I might never leave.
The tension she didn’t realize she was carrying in her neck and shoulders seeped out like a squirrelly balloon losing air.
The bathroom was just as calming. She found the visitors’ bags in the closet and helped herself to one of them. The bag held travel sizes of everything she needed, from shampoo to a toothbrush.
She stripped out of the Victorian day dress and walked into the marbled shower, where she stayed until her mental timer rang, forcing her to turn off the blissfully hot water.
After moisturizing, she slipped into a blue cotton robe, wrapped her hair in a towel, and walked out to find Austin in a yoga cobra pose on the floor, wearing only a pair of boxer briefs.
Her heart swelled, and she couldn’t take her eyes off him, but she somehow managed to squeak out a question, “How often do you do yoga?” Of course, that wasn’t the question she wanted to ask, and it sounded so stupid.
What she wanted to ask was if he’d like to have sex. His answer would be yes, the same as hers, and they’d be late, and Elliott would leave them behind.
“I start every day with a few poses to loosen up. If I didn’t, I’d only be able to limp to the shower.” From the cobra pose, he moved into the bow pose.
“Damn, you put me to shame.” She stood in front of the French door, looking out at the lily pond while watching his reflection in the glass. “Did you talk to Pops and JL?”
He pushed onto his hands and knees and up into a downward dog pose. “I did, and JL can’t wait to talk to you.”
She glanced back over her shoulder. After a good stretch, Austin walked his hands to his feet and slowly rolled up into a standing position. She had to look away again, gulping at the size of his package. Damn, he was huge.
He walked into the bathroom and turned on the water. “Everybody is excited to meet the woman who changed my life.”
She followed him, stopping at the open door. “I didn’t change anything. Your family just didn’t know how happy you were before you went back in time. I hope you’ll tell them about your project so I won’t have to live a lie.”
He shucked his briefs, and she tried to look away, but it was impossible. The scars on his leg, knee, and up to his hip were blemishes on a perfectly sculpted body and did nothing to distract from his…arousal.
“I wouldn’t say I was happy, but I wasn’t unhappy…if that makes sense,” he said, stepping into the shower.
“It does to me.”
The shower door closed, and she walked out to the enclosed lily pond and sat on a stone bench, hoping the breeze would cool her off. She unwrapped her hair and ran her fingers through the damp strands, unable to get the sight of him out of her mind. He had been so gentle with her for days now, and she was no longer afraid of his size or how they would fit together. Instead, she knew exploring would be fun and exciting.
Fifteen minutes later, Austin walked out with a towel wrapped around his waist.
She slapped
