Russ. âBut yes, that kind of bat.ââIâm intrigued,âI admit. âGo on.ââWell, at sunset, they all come out to look for food,âhe says. âThey stream over the water and fi ll the sky with black wings. Itâs incredible! Itâs like this giant cloud of creatures hovering over you.âRussâs eyes are lit up like heâs telling me weâre about to win the lottery. His smile is wide open and his enthusiasm is infectious. âThat sounds amazing,âI say, sitting down in a chair next to him. âThis is happening tonight?ââSummer sunsets,âhe says. âThatâs when theyâre here. The bats are up from Mexico.ââOoh, murciĂ©lagos,âI say. For some reason the Spanish word for bat is one of the only things that has stuck in my head since eighth grade Spanish II. âSĂ, dork,âsays Russ. âAnd the umbrella?âI ask, ignoring his jab. âWell, itâs not for rain,âhe says. âThe sky is about to fi ll with mammals, Priscilla! You do the math.ââEwww!âI wail, tucking my feet underneath
me in my wide wooden chair. A waiter comes by to get us drinks from the bar, and Russ orders a root beer. It sounds so good, I get one too. When they come, theyâre extra cold and frothy. âGood choice,âI say. âCheers,âsays Russ, clinking his mug with mine. An older couple wanders down the lawn and joins us, sitting on the bench to our left. Theyâre holding hands, I notice, which I always think is really annoying among people my age, but somehow sweet between couples like my par- entsâage and older. Maybe thatâs because my parents never hold hands. They love each other and all, but they just donât show it that way. This couple, though, is more like my grandpar- entsâage. âYou two waiting for the bats?âasks the husband. âYes, sir,âsays Russ. âItâll be the fi rst time for Priscilla here.ââWe watched last night, but they didnât show,âsays the wife, looking at me.
I glance over at Russ. âItâs not a sure thing,âhe says. âBut I thought itâd be fun to try.ââI guess bats are fi ckle,âI say, looking back at the old couple. âThe concierge at the hotel says the bats are still pregnant and might not be ready to come out and feed yet,âsays the husband. The way he says âfeedâsounds a little gross to me, but Iâm curious to see this bat phenom- enon. We sit silently for a few more minutes, and Russ and I sip our root beers. Even without the bats fl ying, this time around dayâs end is stunning. There is a brief golden moment that seems like it comes straight out of a cinematographerâs fi lmic dreamâthe sparkling glow on the water, the bright green of the grass under the rose-hued sky. And Russâs hair with a shimmer of sundown in it. Itâs like a song. âAre you disappointed?âhe asks me, when the sun sets and weâre left in the blue glow of twilight, sans fl ying rodents. âNo,âI say. âIt was lovely.â
Chapter 12 On Friday night, I have plans to meet Jade and Sebastian at Dirtyâs. I go to Jadeâs house first to pick her upâshe doesnât live too far from the Drag, which is this main strip near campus, and itâs definitely my turn to drive. When she gets in the Festiva, Jade instantly comments on the music. I realize Iâve been play- ing Russâs dusty-ass tape for days. Iâm kind of into it. âOld-school!âshe says, when some insanely ancient Green Day song comes on. âI think this is Russâs older brotherâs high school mix tape or something,âI say. âThe family canât be all bad if he was into Billy Joe back in the day,âsays Jade. By the time we get to Dirtyâs, Sebastian
is already spinning, and Jade and I grab two sodas and settle into our regular booth. âI tried to see the bats this week,âI say. âItâs early,âshe says. âTheyâre probably still pregnant.âFunny how the bats are this normal thing to talk about in Austin. Itâs like I just said, âOh, I went to the supermarket today.âBut Iâm talking about fl ying mice here. âYeah, Russ took me down to the lawn by the Four Seasons and we were justââI start. âWait,âinterrupts Jade. âYou went on a date with your fratty neighbor? And you have his mix tape playing in your car . . . ?ââIt was not a date,âI say fi rmly. âMore like I was looking for something to do. Thatâs all.ââYou must have been really bored,âsays Jade, taking a sip of her drink and looking back toward Sebastian. âRuss isnât that bad,âI say. âHeâs not?âshe asks. âYouâre always acting like heâs the biggest a-hole on the planet with the way he wonât call you âQuinnâand how he
hangs around all the time.ââYeah,âI say. âThatâs true. He does irritate me.ââGood thing you have Sebastian to focus on,âsays Jade, smiling. I look over and see his fast hands replac- ing the Fretless Coma album that just played. Sebastian really is hot. I hear the bells over the door jingle. âHey, thereâs Rick,âI say to Jade, whose back is to the entrance. She doesnât turn around. âRick!âI
