Velvetâs cheeks were fiery red. Jerardâs implication was clear; she was the other âyoung ladyâ who liked to play games in the bathâwith him? God, what else could he have meant! The idea of it wasâexhilarating!
She picked up her small case. âIf youâll tell me where my room is âŠ?â
Jerard pushed the door open and went inside. âStep this way, Mrs Dale,â he mocked. âAnd Iâll show it to you.â
Her eyes widened. âIâI canât stay in there with you!â
âWhy not?â his eyes were narrowed. âIt is a suite, after all. With four bedrooms,â he added tauntingly.
âYes, but Iââ her hand tightened on the handle of her case. âIâd rather have a room of my own.â
âWe can talk this out later,â he looked pointedly at the listening Vicki. âCome inside for now.â
She went reluctantly. She couldnât possibly stay the night here, even if it was a suite.

Jerard was right, she did get soaked helping Vicki with her bath, but she had a lot of fun too. Without her clothes Vicki was painfully thin, her hair secured on top of her head to keep it dry making her look even more so. And yet she was a robust child, with a healthy glow to her cheeks.
It felt strange to be bathing a child of this size; she was only used to the tiny squirming bundle that Tony usually was. But Vicki looked angelic with her face newly washed and shiny, her hair glossily clean, her pink cotton nightgown reaching down to her ankles.
She came out to the lounge to drink the warm milk her father had ordered for her, accepting demurely when he ordered her to bed once she had drunk it, evidence that she was tired, even though she wasnât going to admit it.
âI want you both to take me to bed,â she requested shyly.
Jerard looked at Velvet. âAll right,â he agreed as he saw her nod. âJust this once.â
Vicki went quite happily into the bedroom, a hand in each of theirs, and climbed beneath the bedclothes. âNow you both have to tuck me in,â she announced mischievously.
âVickiââ
âOh, please, Daddy,â she pleaded. âJust for tonight!â
He shrugged. âOkay,â he agreed indulgently.
âRight. You sit here,â she ordered him to sit on one side of the bed, âand you here,â she ordered Velvet to the other side. âNow I want you both to kiss me goodnight.â
âYou seem to have a lot of âI wantsâ tonight,â her father said sternly.
âDaddy!â
He bent to kiss her on the forehead. âYouâre very bossy tonight, young lady.â
âI know,â she grinned. âBut itâs so nice having you both here, itâs almost likeââ
âVicki, no!â He moved back, standing up. âBehave yourself!â
âBut I was only going to say itâs almost like having a mummy and a daddy.â Her arms came up lovingly about Velvetâs neck. âI was thinkingââ
âWhen you start thinking it usually means trouble,â her father said grimly.
She looked appealingly at Velvet. âItâs just that your little boy doesnât have a daddy, and I donât have a mummy, and I wonderedââ
âVicki, for Godâs sake!â her father exploded.
Her mouth set rebelliously, her arms tightening about Velvetâs neck. âWill you be my mummy, Velvet?â she asked shyly.
CHAPTER FIVE
VELVET didnât know what to do, what to say. The question had been so unexpected that she was just speechless. Looked at from Vickiâs point of view it would seem a perfectly natural request, even a logical one, so much so that Velvet didnât have an answer to it.
âItâs time you were asleep, Vicki,â Jerard said briskly.
She pouted. âBut Velvet hasnât answered me.â
âAnd she isnât going to,â he told her firmly. âIâve warned you once today about asking questions like this, Iâm not going to tell you again.â He tucked the covers about her. âNow get to sleep,â he switched off the main light, leaving the night-lamp on. âItâs going to be a long exciting day tomorrow.â He took hold of Velvetâs arm and led her over to the door. âNight, darling,â he said huskily to his daughter.
"Night, Daddy,â she yawned. âVelvet, youâyou arenât cross with me, are you?â she asked uncertainly.
Velvet came out of her stupor. âNo, of course Iâm not, Vicki,â she said with forced brightness.
âGood. Because I like you very, very much.â She closed her eyes sleepily.
âHell!â Jerard swore as soon as they were in the lounge and Vickiâs bedroom door was firmly closed. âHell and damnation!â He paced the room angrily.
Velvet pushed her tousled hair back from her face. âI heard you the first time,â she said shakily.
He turned on her fiercely. âI warned you about this. Iââ
âYes, you warned me!â she snapped. âHow like you to turn around and say âI told you so"!â
âHow would you know it was like me?â his mouth twisted. âWhen you say you donât even know me?â
âIââ
âIâll tell you how well you know me,â his fingers dug into her shoulders as he shook her. âYou know me so well that you only used to say one word and Iâd be in bed with you.â
âJerardââ
âThatâs the word!â he said grimly, his mouth coming down forcefully on hers.
She hadnât wanted him to kiss her, had been afraid that he would. She melted against him at the first touch of his lips, her body arching against the hard contours of his, her fingers entangled in the dark thickness of his hair.
Lips met lips, exploringly, Jerardâs body hardening to arousal against her, his hands moving feverishly across her back. He swung her up in his arms and carried her over to the sofa, his mouth not leaving hers as he lay down beside her, his lips continuing their exploration.
Jerard was the one to finally break the kiss, his eyes dark as he looked down at her, his breathing ragged. âAre you sure this is what you want, Velvet? he asked huskily.
âOh yes,â her hands clung about his throat, âthis is what I want.â It was what her body cried out for, what she hungered for.
She had been too long denied this male warmth,
