There was a long pause and she kept her gaze on the leaves of the plant.
âI wonât.â
Thatâs it?
Nothing else to say?
She didnât know what sheâd expected...didnât know what she wanted even, but a part of her felt disappointed at the ease at which he agreed to what she was saying.
âOkay? Thatâs it?â
âYes.â Kyro blinked and turned toward the door, but not before she caught itâit was there. A note of disappointment in his voice. âI will walk you home.â

They walked in silence on the way back to her apartment and Evren fought with the sinking feeling she had in her chest, as if sheâd just done something wrong.
What sheâd said felt so, so wrong and she wanted to take it back.
Her gaze was low as they walked, Kyro by her side, his eyes focused on something she couldnât see. He was in his head again, far away.
And even though they werenât speaking, the noise of the crowd of aliens heading to and from the market did nothing to pierce the dead silence between them.
They were almost to her apartment when she heard a voice that made her want to roll her eyes.
Not again.
Looking up before them, she saw MâAgunt standing with two yeti aliens in the middle of the street. She was just about to ask Kyro if they could walk another way when Kyroâs hand circled her arm almost protectively, his brow knit.
Eyes narrowed, he pulled her closer to his side just as MâAgunt turned and looked in their direction.
The way MâAgunt turned seemed so dramatic, it was almost as if he had been waiting in the street for their exact arrival and had only been pretending to have a conversation with the two aliens.
âHuman!â he proclaimed, catching glances from some of the beings walking by them as he sauntered in their direction.
When the two aliens heâd been talking to seemed to blend into the crowd, it only furthered her suspicion that MâAgunt had been waiting for them to come by.
âDoesnât he have wares to sell?â Kyro murmured, his tone reflecting such annoyance it made a bubble of laughter form within her just like that.
âI was thinking the same thing. I donât know why heâs trying so hard to be my friend. Itâs a bit unsettling, to be honest.â
âMaybe donât walk around looking so mesmerizing and then the likes of him will keep away. I have seen countless males watching you as we walk. He is not the only one wanting to draw closer.â There was growing contempt in his tone and it took her aback.
She found herself looking up at him, his words repeating in her mind as she stared at him.
He didnât look at her though, his frown was directed at MâAgunt who was still sauntering toward them, shimmering golden robe brushing just above the ground and a grin on his face.
Did Kyro just say she was mesmerizing?
âMy dear human friend.â MâAguntâs greeting scraped through her thoughts like a record scratch. âHow great to meet you here?â
Pasting a smile on her face she turned to face the large alien. âIt is nice to see you too, MâAgunt.â
At her greeting, Kyroâs arm tightened around her arm.
âAnd, nice to see you again, Borxclan Kyro.â MâAguntâs grin slipped a little when he turned his attention to Kyro.
Kyro didnât answer, he just narrowed his eyes some more and murmured something underneath his breath that Evren immediately caught.
âCanât say Iâm pleased to see you.â
Evrenâs eyes widened.
âWhat was that?â MâAgunt gave him a side-eye.
Kyro opened his mouth, the corners of his lips curling, and she knew without a doubt that he was going to insult the merchant. She had to grab his hand and squeeze it.
âIs today your day off, MâAgunt? I thought youâd be in the market.â She switched the conversation quickly. She could almost feel the vitriol emanating from Kyro.
âAh,â MâAgunt said. âYes, but I had other...business to attend to.â His eyes focused on her with clarity and she felt as if the other business he was referring to was her.
She was reading a lot in peopleâs gazes today and the common variable was her. Maybe that drink sheâd had did have an effect on her after all.
âWhat about you? I am seeing a lot of you lately,â MâAgunt continued.
âMaybe becauseââ Kyro began, those two words already slicing like daggers, and Evren had a feeling she knew exactly what he was going to say. Something along the lines of MâAgunt being a pest.
ââbecause Iâve been out a lot lately.â She finished Kyroâs sentence and smiled sweetly at them both.
âAh,â MâAguntâs grin deepened. With a tentacle, he gestured to a building close by. âWould you like to have a drink? Iâll pay.â
Ah.
She cringed inwardly. No, she didnât want to have a drink. But sheâd sidestepped his advances so much lately, she was beginning to feel guilty and she might even be creating an enemy in him.
âNo, we wouldnât âlike to have a drink.â We are tired and we are heading back to her quarters to restâŠâ Kyro spoke up.
â...For the rest of the day,â he added. âWithout interruptions.â
His tone was still clipped.
âI see.â It was MâAguntâs turn to narrow his eyes. âTogether?â
âWhat does it matter to you?â Kyro took a step toward MâAgunt and she found herself holding him back. âI will be staying with her,â he added, and Evrenâs wide eyes flew up to his.
Smiling at MâAgunt, she dipped her head in a slight bow as she began to pull Kyro away and down the streetâa mammoth task because his entire body was reluctant. âWeâre a bit tired, MâAgunt. Maybe some other time. Iâll see you in the market maybe?â
Eyes still narrowed on Kyro, his entire face gone hard, MâAgunt didnât even look at her when he replied. âYes, human. Some other
