âNothing to do now except rest.â David still wasnât worried. Kenzieâcode name Dead-Eyeâwas a top-notch warrior, and even though she spent most of her time in meetings or court, she kept up with her training. Except for JC disarming her recently, she hadnât lost her edge in the field.
Cullenâcode name Oregonâwas an excellent tracker and hunter and was calm and levelheaded in a crisis. They had a combination of skills needed to get them back on course, although he didnât believe they were lost. Their whereabouts were just unknown.
David closed his eyes and rested, and the next thing he knew, Robbie was shaking his shoulder. âItâs been an hour, Da. Mom still hasnât called. Somethingâs wrong. We have to find her.â
David stretched. âWe canât leave, Robbie. She knows the CP location. Sheâll get here.â
âYou lost her before, and she almost got killed,â Robbie said with a tinge of fear in his voice.
Robbieâs accusation would have gotten anyone else a broken nose. âI havenât lost her. Sheâll be here. Letâs trust her.â
âHow long do you plan to wait?â Robbie looked right into Davidâs soul and twisted it into a thousand knots.
âYer motherâs a soldier, lad. She knows what sheâs doing.â
âIf youâd waited for her in London, she wouldnât have come back,â Henry added. âYou have to go find her, Da.â
David unfolded his map again. âLook. Weâre hereââhe pointedââat the southernmost point of the islands. Muckle Flugga off the coast of Unst is the northernmost point. Thatâs a distance of seventy miles. The Shetland Islands cover an area of over five hundred and fifty square miles. Where do ye want to start looking?â
âYouâre the miracle worker, Da. Tell us where to look, where to go.â Robbie folded his arms across his chest and glared at David with alternating expressions of fear and helplessness.
David rubbed his forehead. He had to stay patient with them. Theyâd never experienced being afraid for someone elseâs life before. Theyâd learned patience and how to control emotions during times of crisis, but theyâd never been fearful for someone they loved. They didnât know how to handle that, and it would be easy for them to do something rashâlike go off on their own to search for her.
âAs soon as Pete and Connor get here, weâll develop a search plan to find her and Cullen. Do not go off by yerselves. That would compound the problem. Yer job right now is to rest, to prepareââhe tapped his foreheadââup here.â
The twins returned to their spot to sulk, and David stared at the map, willing Kenzieâs position to pop up like a symbol on a radar display. He mentally placed all the teams on the map, looking for a missing piece.
âWhatâd the ship you saw look like?â Tavis asked.
âIt wasnât close enough to see. What should it look like?â
âIf itâs ours, long and narrow with a shallow draft, a snake decorating the prow. It has one large, square sail and a steering oar at the stern. It left three weeks ago and could be on its way back.â
âYeâre a trained sailor. Why didnât ye go with them?â David asked.
âMy fighting and strategic skills are needed here more than on a trading mission.â
Josephâs watchful gaze moved from David to Tavis, and he looked up at his dad with curiosity. David knew then that Tavisâs real reason was fear of leaving his son behind, knowing that any minute Arne could order Tavisâs death. With Tavis out of the way, Arne would have control over Joseph.
âHow many men does a longboat carry?â David asked.
âForty oarsmen and one coxswain.â
If they had to fight forty Vikingsâhigh-powered rifles vs. battle-axesâit would all be over in minutes unless hostages were involved. But the clan didnât come here to kill off the settlement. They didnât come here to die, either.
Remy picked up Tavisâs net with the dead birds. âHow do you usually eat these?â
âFresh, salted in brine, or smoked and dried,â Tavis said.
âIâll just fry âem up with some of my special seasonings.â He flicked his BIC lighter. âThe wind is blowing out to sea, and the breeze will carry away the aroma. I donât want any uninvited guests for dinner.â
âYou going to cook?â Tavis asked.
âYou know me. If I canât watch basketball, Iâd rather be cooking.â
Tavis laughed. âYouâd rather be banginâ your sticks or watching womenâs curling than do anything else except cook some Cajun delicacy, and that includes sex.â
âWhatâs sex, Dad?â
âWellâŠâ Tavis said.
âItâs when your parents kiss and hug each other,â Robbie said. âAt least thatâs what they told us when we were growing up.â
Henry teasingly tapped Josephâs chin with his knuckles. âDonât believe him. Itâs one of the four big lies, along with Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the tooth fairy.â
âWho are they?â Joseph asked.
âWays to control kidsâ behavior when they canât think of any other way,â Robbie said.
âWell, you sure are cynical,â Ensley said. âIâm glad you werenât around when I was growing up.â
âI donât understand what theyâre talking about, Dad.â
âFor once, Iâm glad, Joseph. Robbie and Henry are mad because they canât go search for their mom.â
âIf I could search for Mom, Iâd go. I have my knife, and I would fight to protect her.â
âThere you go, see?â Robbie said, glaring at David. âAt least somebody around here understands how Henry and I feel.â
âEverybody knows how ye feel, lad,â Elliott said. âWe also know we have a chain of command, and yeâre standing on the bottom rung. Yeâll stay put until ye receive an order.â
Elliott did more in three sentences to curb the twinsâ urges than David could have accomplished in an hour.
âJust before actor W. C. Fieldsâs death,â Austin said, âa friend visited Fieldsâs hospital room and was surprised to find him thumbing through a Bible. When the friend asked what Fields was doing with a Bible, Fields replied, âLookinâ for the loopholes.ââ
âSo, whatâs your point, cuz?â Henry mumbled.
âIf you canât search for Kenzie, what can you do? Whereâs the loophole in what Grandpa said? What can you do from
