Adela didnât watch her mouth, though, cuss words tumbling out as panic twisted her features. Martin ran over to her, whooshing through Ro again, which made them both gasp, but he grabbed his sister.
âStop, before Dad comes out and sees this!â Martin said, giving her a shake. âHeâs already stressed to the point Iâm worried heâs going to have a heart attack or stroke or something!â
Conner got his arms around Ro quickly, whispering to him even though he didnât think Martin and Adela could hear him. âGive them a few minutes. Theyâre badly rattled.â Normally, Conner would have been kind of amused by their expressions, but he was learning that his sense of humor was warped and he didnât care for it much at times. âThey can hear you, I think, maybe even sense you. It must just be your dad thatâs blocking us somehow.â
âRo?â Adela rasped shortly thereafter. âRo, are you here? Are youâ?â She glared at Martin. âI feel like a fuckinâ idiot.â
âAdela, your mouth,â Ro said quietly. âMama would whip your butt for that.â
Adela froze, not even breathing at first as she stared at them, or at least in their direction. Martin sniffled and cupped his hands over his mouth.
Finally Adela shook herself and said, âMama always did have a double standard for you boys and me. A lady shouldnât cuss.â She rolled her eyes then promptly burst into tears.
Martin stopped covering his mouth and instead hugged his sister, but it was Ro he addressed. âHowâŠ? How can we hear you? Why are you here? Is Mama with you? Are you in Heaven orâ?â He stopped and huffed. âI guess youâre not in Hell, but why canât Dad hear you? I know heâs angry, but thatâs just because that guy showed up here the morning after you died and told Dad heâd, uh, that yâall had, uh. Uh.â
Conner wasnât far off from being shocked, which was hard to do to him. âThat guy, the JD guy, came to talk to your dad?â
Ro squeaked and his siblings almost wet their pants, Conner would bet.
âOh my God, oh my God, oh my God!â Martin chanted as he started backing up again. âHe is here, Adela!â
âSo shut up so we can hear what he has to say for himself,â she scolded, crossing her arms over her chest. She tapped her foot. âWell, Ro, why were you having nasty sex with some scuzzy guy in the alley? You know he showed up here telling Dad that you two were fuck buddies and he was really going to miss the way you took hisââ
âStop!â Ro tried to double over, as if he was going to retch. Conner held onto him and rubbed between his shoulder blades, trying to comfort him. âHe came here and told DadâŠâ
âI canât believe youâre really here,â Adela said, her voice full of wonder. Martin was standing, staring with his mouth gaped open. âSo itâs true, about the spirits? I mean, I didnât not believe Uncle Sev, but itâs different. Now it is real to me. Can I touch you?â
âNo,â Ro said faintly. âI donât know how to do that yet. It took a lot to just move Martinâs hair.â
Adela looked at her younger brother and scowled. âYeah, if heâd ditch that stupid emo haircut he might actually be cute.â
âWhatever,â Martin grumbled, still looking shell-shocked.
âWhat did Dad say?â Ro asked, sounding gutted. âGod, I canât believe JD did that.â
âWhy not? You said he hurt you.â Conner hadnât forgotten. He was going to see to it that JD paid for doing so, too. âAnd remember, before you answer, they can hear you, too.â
âDad said he showed up drunk, very drunk and maybe stoned from drugs, too. He looked like heâd been crying, and he told Dad it was his fault you died, because heâd been too rough when yâall hadââ Adela made a lewd gesture with her hands. âDone it.â
Ro scowled at her. âYou can cuss like a sailor but you canât say âwhen yâall had sexâ?â
She wrinkled her nose as she grimaced. âYuck. Not when it comes to my brothers. Thatâs just disgusting. Anyway, Dad didnât say anything to anyone else, but he made JD leave and threatened to have him arrested if he came back around. He didnât want people knowing his son was being a cheap floozy in the alleyway. His words, not mine, bro.â
Ro groaned and sank against Conner. âHe hates me now.â
âHe doesnât. He hates what you did, and feels guilty that you were so lonely and lost that you did it,â Adela corrected. âHe thinks that if you hadnât been obligated to stay and take care of him and Mama, or at least keep them company, you wouldnât have been giving yourself away to a scumbag like JD, and you wouldnât have ended up dead.â Adela took a deep breath then continued, âDad actually begged and pleaded with Doc Hamlin not to do an autopsy. He didnât want anyone else to know about that. Doc Hamlin said he wouldnât do one, I donât know how he got around it. Maybe because the cause of death was obvious. I didnât ask. I just know that Dad is a mess, and like Martin said, maybe dangerously so.â
âWe canât lose him too,â Martin said. âYou need to stay away from him, Ro. Iâm sorry, but you do.â
Conner wanted to argue, but Martin wouldnât hear him, and anyways Adela was nodding and so, God damn it, was Ro.
âYeah, yeah youâre right. I already hurt everyone by being stupid.â Ro tugged on his arm until Conner released him. âLook, I wonât come around again. I canât get close to Dad anyway. I canât hear him, he canât hear me. Iâm sorry, for all the good it does. I love yâall.â
âWe love you too, but it has to be this way for now.â Martin stood beside Adela, who murmured her agreement. âI hope to see
