head.ā€ His dark eyes met Benā€™s, again stirring that past shit that Ben really didnā€™t want dredged up, but of course Matt didnā€™t let anyone get away with much.

God, he needed air.

* * * * *

When they pulled up to their destination, Ben was the first out of the car. He muttered something about needing to see someone in Legal first and that heā€™d meet them upstairs, then disappeared through the front doors.

Lucas looked toward Matt. ā€œHe has the lead on this?ā€

ā€œBecause heā€™s right. Youā€™re too close, and in the wrong position to help her embrace her submissive nature. You have to trust him.ā€

ā€œI do. With my life. Not so much with Marcieā€™s.ā€ Lucas sighed. ā€œYou know his M.O.ā€

Matt straightened his cuffs. ā€œBen is one of the most disciplined Masters Iā€™ve ever seen. He never loses control, because he puts all his energy and focus into holding the reins, into getting the sub to give him everything. Heā€™s brutal, going to the edge of edge play. But he always gives a woman the experience of her life.ā€

ā€œAnd in return, he takes nothing but the challenge of having broken her down. He doesnā€™t let her in. Doesnā€™t let any of them in.ā€ Lucas grimaced. ā€œThe problem is, sheā€™s already inside him, because sheā€™s family. I know what he carries around, and so do you. Iā€™m not sure thatā€™s a place I want her to be.ā€

ā€œMarcie has been starry-eyed in love with Ben since she first laid eyes on him,ā€ Matt pointed out. ā€œWe all saw it. As improbable as it is that it might have survived the transition from childhood to adulthood, from what I saw this morning, that girlhood crush has become a womanā€™s passion. Itā€™s possible weā€™re witnessing the very rare instance when a teenage crush was never a crush at all.ā€

Mattā€™s handheld buzzed with an incoming message. When Matt glanced at it, his lips quirked. Leaning forward, Lucas saw the screen. Not texting you. Bully. He raised a brow, his lips curving.

ā€œSavannah?ā€

ā€œYes. I told her to text me every so often while she was awake. The last one was ā€˜Bite Meā€™. Sheā€™s getting more conciliatory. The first one was ā€˜Fascist Assholeā€™.ā€ Matt shook his head. ā€œI have the housekeeper texting Janet as well, to let me know if she does too much.ā€

ā€œSheā€™s going to stab you in your sleep.ā€

ā€œIf Savannah ever decides to take me out, sheā€™ll do it toe-to-toe while Iā€™m fully conscious.ā€ Matt gazed at the handheld screen fondly, thumb passing over it as if he was caressing the woman sending the barbed missives. ā€œSheā€™s a mountain lion.ā€

ā€œLike Cass. And like Marcie, truth be known.ā€

ā€œI know. I also know this is hard, Luc.ā€ Matt met his gaze anew. ā€œShe wants in, and sheā€™s determined to get there. It makes sense she chose the man sheā€™s always trusted the most. But yes, Ben has some very dark places in him. For most of his life, heā€™s kept them buried, but the events of the past few years are opening them up. Weā€™ve all tried various ways of offering our help, but heā€™s not there yet. Iā€™m not sure what will be the trigger, but if she forces her way into those rooms, eventually heā€™s going to lose a grip on the reins. Itā€™s possible sheā€™ll get hurt.ā€

Lucasā€™ hand tightened on the console between them. ā€œIf Marcie went to him for mentoring, thatā€™s a front. She wants more than that. The mentoring is just all sheā€™s been able to get him to agree to doā€¦so far.ā€

Matt nodded. ā€œBenā€™s loyalty to you, to us, is unquestioned. If you want to put an end to it right here, right now, you need only tell him. Heā€™d do it, in a heartbeat. But if youā€™re not going to make that call, you need to let it play out. Sometimes you have to step out of the way and see what Fate decides.ā€

ā€œJesus. Youā€™ve been talking to Jon.ā€

Mattā€™s lips curved. ā€œNo, but heā€™s rubbed off on me, as weā€™ve all rubbed off on each other over the years. Itā€™s time for a change in Benā€™s life. He feels it, as do we all. Unfortunately, what weā€™re suggesting makes Marcie a guinea pig. Normally, Iā€™d trust my gut, take the risk, but this part is your call, Lucas. Yours and Cassandraā€™s.ā€

ā€œCass will get worked up about it, initially, but in the end sheā€™ll say Marcieā€™s of legal age. That if what she wants is Ben, she has a right to take her shot. To get hurt like any other adult. But sheā€™ll worry, same as I will. Marcie is so fucking young.ā€ He sighed. ā€œI donā€™t know how Iā€™ll react if he breaks her heart, even if heā€™s dealing with his own knee-jerk fight-or-flight instinct. Fair warning.ā€

ā€œWeā€™ll protect her if she needs protecting. Weā€™ve always put the well-being of our women first. Itā€™s in Ben as strong as any of us, for all that he hasnā€™t found a singular focus for it. Maybe he has now.ā€

ā€œWhoa, wait a minute.ā€ Lucas caught Mattā€™s arm. ā€œDid you just suggest what I think you suggested?ā€

Matt gave him his trademark piercing expression. ā€œHave you ever known him to act this unsettled about any woman? Or ask the question he asked about her being part of the group?ā€

ā€œHe said it was just a heads-up, because of her fantasies. Not his.ā€

ā€œMaybe not consciously.ā€

ā€œFuck.ā€ Lucas sat back. ā€œSeriously? You think this could be going in that direction? I just wrapped my mind around him mentoring her.ā€

ā€œI wouldnā€™t swear to it, but I do know when it comes to women, Ben isnā€™t easily rattled.ā€

ā€œDamn it, Matt.ā€ Lucas sighed, ran his hand over his face. ā€œIf itā€™s true, she will stumble on those dark places. And you know the problem isnā€™t her inability to handle that.ā€

ā€œCorrect. The problem is how Ben will handle it. If itā€™s any comfort, I suspect Marcie already knows a great deal about Ben. She may not be able to withstand the storm, but she knows itā€™s coming.
