Kind of.
âIâll never be clean if youâre always naked around me,â she tries to protest, but we find a way we can wash each other and still have a good time without being too late.
âWeâll be late,â she tells me once weâre in the car.
âI know a back way, we wonât be late,â I laugh, taking the back road down the opposite side of the hill, which takes us straight to campus and Mastersâ office in half the time then if we went the other way.
I havenât told her, but I asked my attorney to meet us here, Simon Greer. I canât see him once we pull up, but assume heâs already inside which turns out to be the case.
Dean Mastersâ secretary ushers us in and straight away I can see him and the Professor on his side of his huge oak desk, with Simon on what I guess is our side for this meeting.
He stands to greet me and introduces himself to Katelyn.
Masters and Professor Bernstein stay seated, frowning.
âWe didnât expect to see either of you here this morning,â The Dean says in his best schoolmaster voice. Talking down to me already, knowing my hand before Iâve even picked up any cards.
If thereâs one man who knows me through and through, itâs Masters.
âI was in the area, and Mr. Heart suggested I stop by,â my attorney announces, saving me the trouble of making my own wiseass remark.
Iâm done with Mastersâs and his school.
If only he could have been happy for me. Happy for both me and Katelyn. Wouldâve meant a lot.
Masters turns his attention to Katelyn, the Professor clearing his throat, signaling the start of their rehearsed speech.
Itâs all a âterrible misunderstandingâ, the whole business between her and me, according to them that is.
âIf youâll agree to stop⊠seeing Mr. Heart in a personal capacity, we and the board of scholarship directors can draw a line under your name instead of through it. We can guarantee your place within the post-graduate research program, and assure you of the best chance at a long and⊠healthy career,â The Professor says, with all the attention and care of a caring grandfather.
âAnd if I donât?â Katelyn asks. Not a silly question, given the circumstances.
âThen we draw a line through your name,â Masters says gruffly, looking at his watch before scowling at me and then Simon in turn.
I hold my hand up, smiling politely at Masters.
âSir? With all due respect. If I was no longer on the faculty if I was no longer at the college. It wouldnât put you, the college, or Katelyn in a negative situation, would it?â I ask.
âWhat do you mean, Heart? Are you offering to resign?â he scoffs. âThrowing yourself into the fire to save the girl? I donât think so, it wonât work like that, and itâs gone way beyond that,â he bellows, jumping up and waving his hands in the air, furious.
Simon looks at me intently, trying not to smile.
I shrug and have to admit to him. âWorth a try.â
But itâs Katelynâs interruption that surprises everyone.
âYou canât quit, Wes. I wonât let you. And you,â she says, standing up herself and pointing at the two older men opposite. âThe pair of you are nothing but bullies, manipulative mean old bastards whoâve done nothing but try and frighten me since I started to think for myself.â
Mastersâ jaw drops and Professor Bernstein is reaching for his own medication.
âI wonât let you quit, Wes because, I quit! The scholarship, the research grant. Boston, everything! You can shove it. Iâm a person, not a lap dog, and if you think youâre the only research grant on offer in the country â in the whole world, you really should pay more attention.â
I feel myself swell with pride again, sheâs amazing. And so cute when sheâs genuinely angry.
But I canât let her quit.
Iâm quitting so she can stay, thatâs the plan.
Simon frowns, checking his own watch and when Masters, Bernstein, and Katelyn all start to try and shout over each other, he stands up.
âGentlemen, Katelyn. Please,â he insists, holding up a sheaf of papers.
âIâll make this brief,â he says, lowering his voice and passing the papers over to Masters.
âThis is Mr. Heartâs formal resignation, effective at the time of writing and signing, beating you to it Iâm afraid kiddo,â he says to Katelyn with a wink.
Masters looks stunned, his mouth pumping air like a fish.
âAnd these,â Simon continues, âAre preliminary notices of intent to commence civil cases against you both individually, and the college itself.â
âRidiculous!â Masters cries. âYouâll find yourself served with papers if you keep on this line Heart. I think itâs high time this meeting was adjourned,â he huffs.
I stand up, and leaning over so my face is an inch from Masters, I spell it out for him.
âListen. I quit you piece of shit, and Iâll sue your ass for harassment, defamation and blackmail, and anything else legal eagle here can come up with, as well as taking the time to come back when itâs done to finish things properly myself,â I tell him.
He knows Iâm not warning, not bluffing. Iâm telling him.
Man to man.
âYouâll do what youâre told Masters, and you too Bernie. If I have to come back here again, Iâll reach so far down each of your throats youâll be shaking my hand every time you need to go shit. Got it,â I growl, bringing my fist down on the table in front of both of them, making everybody in the room jump.
Masters scowls again for a moment, breathing in heavily as he looks from me to Katelyn, then to Simon, whoâs fanning himself with his papers like he doesnât want to hold onto them much longer.
âThis is outrageous. You canât just come in here, demanding⊠what is it you want exactly anyway, Heart?â he asks, his eyes narrowing like red slits in his skull.
âKatelyn,â I tell him simply. Smiling.
âSheâs what I want, and I want you to treat her with some well earned
