As soon as Kennedy was upand around, Decker apprised him of her wish to visit the Intabet. After one of the sparring sessions theyâd initiated to aid in Conâsrecovery, she gave him the broad outline of her idea. Conunquestionably approved; he immediately insisted on leading themission and suggested they set out as soon as they could do sosafely. Deck had already informed him about the attack sheâdsuffered in the float-ways and about the sample of the worm sheâdgiven Aqila and Bly â who were presently at work on theanalysis.
Con said, âIf I know thosetwo â and I do â theyâll definitely devise a way for us to detectthose worms.â
âOnce they do that, themission is a go for us?â
âAs far Iâm concerned, yes, but youâre forgetting one thing â weâll need Lindstromâsapproval, too.â
âYou think heâll giveit?â
âOnly one way to findout.â Kennedy sent a request for a meeting with his CO andLindstrom quickly granted them a timeslot for the following day at1130 hours.
Unfortunately, the morningof the meeting they had lingered over their sparring session alittle too long and had to rush to clean up and be there on time. When Deckerâs hand-held buzzed with an urgent message, she pulledit out, muttering, âCome on, Lindstrom. Weâre not even two-minuteslate.â After reading the message, she gasped, âOh, no!â
Con asked,âWhat?â
âThereâs been a securitybreach of the shuttle. Unauthorized personnel attempting to accessthe piloting controls.â
âDid you do the checktoday?â
âI sent Finnegan. Shelogged a âstatus satisfactoryâ almost thirty-minutes ago.â Deckersighed, saying, âMaybe she set it off accidentally somehow. Iâllcomm her.â Moira almost immediately answered the hail; Decker couldhear, not one but two alarms blaring in the background. âFinnegan! What the hell is going on?â
âI donât know. I simplysat down and switched on the computer and the shuttle wentcrazy.â
âAre you in the pilotâsseat?â When she got an affirmative answer, Decker had to take adeep breath to avoid throwing a few choice words at the rattledgirl. She wanted to ask why she was sitting in the one place sheâdbeen explicitly warned not to â but first things first. Deckerremotely logged into the piloting controls and cleared all of thealarms.
âIâm so sorry,â Moirawailed. âI didnât mean toââ
The system status wasstill flashing red so Deck warned, âGet up and out of the pilotâsseat, now, before you reactivate the alarms.â The systemimmediately turned green, indicating Finnegan had vacated the seat.Naiche snapped, âWhy were you sitting there with the system powered up? Iwarned you several timesthat it had biometric controls in place â didnât I?!â
âI donât know what thatmeans. I wasnât going to fly it â I merely wanted to show Bingualand Lootanââ Finnegan stopped abruptly and Decker could hear somechirping noises in the background.
âIs there someone therewith you? Are you okay? Whatâs going on?â
âIâm fine. Itâs only twoMaykure kids I met. Theyâre really nice. They didnât mean to causeany trouble, they just asked meââ
âLetâs back up a fewsteps,â Naiche ordered. âStart with where you met two Maykure.âAfter a few minutes, Decker was able to piece together Moiraâsscrambled, slightly incoherent explanation. âOkay, listen to mevery carefully. Get yourself, andyour little friends, out of that shuttleimmediately. Make sure you activate the system locks and believeme, weâre gonna have a little chat when you get back, aboutââ
Decker was interrupted byan ear-splitting scream from Finnegan, accompanied by furiousbarking from Kayatennae. âWhatâs wrong now?â Moira was sobbing thatsomething had crashed onto the roof, something big. âOkay, okay, calm down. Itâs probably a tree or a rock or something. I doubtvery much itâs a peerazu. There have been no tremors and nosightings in days. Just hold on and Iâll check it out.â Naiche usedthe remote access to check the sensor readings; she almost droppedthe hand-held at the results.
Kennedy, whoâd beensilently listening to the entire exchange, must have noticed herreaction. He reached out a steadying hand. âWhat is it? Is it apeerazu?â
âNo,â she breathed. âItâstwo of them.â Deck quickly marshalled her wits. She told Moira tostay as calm as possible and hunker down â help was on the way.âGet in the very center of the shuttle and stay low. Weâll be thereas fast as we can.â
She and Con raced toLindstromâs office â formulating a rescue plan on the way. Kennedyand Decker quickly agreed that it was time to break out one ofthe Auroraâs small flying crafts.
Lindstrom was easilyconvinced to approve their plan. Maddox, whoâd been summoned alongwith Croker, was a tougher sell. âThere must be another way,â sheinsisted. âWe promised the Maykure we wouldnât use our smallvessels! I gave my word.â
Decker urged, âThere aretwo of their people trapped in that shuttle, too. Theyâllunderstand. Itâs the best way to get those peerazu away from thatshuttle quickly â while still maintaining a chance of surviving theencounter ourselves. In fact, itâs the only way.â
âHow will you even fightthem? Our vessels have no weapons.â
âWe know,â Kennedy said.âWeâve faced this situation before. Deck will fly it and Iâll hangout the hatch with a rifle.â
Maddox tossed up a hand insurrender. âI suppose I must allow this since you say there is noalternative â but I do so under protest.â
âDuly noted,â Lindstromsaid. He nodded at the Tactical leads. âProceed with yourmission.â
Croker tugged at Conâssleeve, delaying their exit from the room. âIt would be much betterif you both could shoot. Would it not?â Before Decker could snap atwhat an obvious but useless statement that was, he added, âI willfly the ship so you are free to do just that.â
âNo, not a good idea,âDecker said. âYou donât have any battle experience.â She and Contook off in a run towards the docking-bay.
âBut I wish to help,âCroker insisted, sprinting alongside them. âI wonât let you downagain.â
Kennedy stopped long enoughto say, âI sincerely believe that. I do. But this isnât the time.Iâm sorry, but three lives are at stake here.â
Croker nodded sadly. âThengo! I wish you all the luck.â

Decker settled into thecontrols of the compact ship, named the Alba. It was much smaller than ashuttle and was obviously meant for no more than fouroccupants.
Con asked, âYougood?â
She scanned the controlpanel. âYeah, pretty basic. Piece of
