Britani’s lips lose their tightness, her perusal of Shya relaxing as my lifemate peeks out in curiosity.
At Shya’s happy sigh, a small smile plays on Britani’s lips.
Her shocking green eyes look up at me, the joy in comforting her friend leeching from her face.
My veins flash frozen.
Purple eyes shine in the moving shadows beyond her shoulder.
A flicker of motion reveals empty darkness.
Kwame and I have our Omega’s backs against the rock wall behind us within half a second, Seeck shoving Nova next to Shya a heartbeat later as he joins our formation.
Omega fear permeates the air, the roaring wind adding to their terror.
Agonizingly long minutes tick by as we search the shadows.
I look to each of my teammates before stepping forward. Shya grabs my shirt, her silent plea for me to stay close shredding my heart. I reach back and circle her wrist with my own, turning to meet her eyes.
I send her comfort through our link but pull her off my shirt.
Nova and Britani gather her close, holding her in feminine arms as I stalk out of our tiny shelter. When I glance back at them, Kwame and Seeck have closed the gap I left, a veritable wall between our Omegas and the world.
Snapping my worry into a box and burying it away for later, I invoke my intensive training and senses and prowl through the darkness.
Before I step under the overhang, I let out a short whistle and flick the links between myself, Kwame, and Seeck.
Shya’s slight form flies across the space and vaults into my arms. She wraps her arms and legs around me, clinging to me as I hook an arm under her bottom and kiss the top of her head.
“All clear.”
I project my voice over the loud wind but aim it into our little space, still uneasy.
“What set you off?” Seeck asks.
I point where I saw the apparition.
“Purple eyes, humanoid despite the color. Too dark to see anything else. No traces of passage, though.”
Kwame’s words solidify what we’ve all already decided.
“Time to move out.”
Nova’s face tightens, but after a glance at Seeck, she turns to Britani. They grasp each other’s shoulders, the untamed beast in Britani’s eyes eager to be let out. Silent words pass between them before they both step toward the packs.
Seeck’s agitation works off him in waves, his fiery hair appropriate for the volatile emotions permeating from him.
“No packs. Only water. We have to move fast and silent.”
He snatches up the nearest water sack, putting the straps over his shoulders so his arms are empty.
Nova looks as though she’s going to balk when he holds out his arms for her to climb into, except after a deep breath, she steps forward and frames his face with her hands.
I fling two water sacks over my back while Seeck and Nova fill the small space with their pheromones. Lust, fear, and determination saturate the air.
Kwame runs his fingers under the rope sleeves on Britani’s arms before smoothing his palm under her chin. A quick peck on the lips and he slides a water sack onto her shoulders before turning away from her. He mashes a water sack to his front and tosses the straps over his own shoulders. She climbs on his back, passing her braid over his shoulder so he can hold the rope trailing from the end. His water sack bulges around her legs while she connects them around his front.
Kwame takes the lead, Seeck pausing long enough to allow him a few feet head start before disappearing into the darkness.
I stroke Shya’s hair and kiss her head before stopping my purr and leaving the shelter.
While my senses stay on high alert, I revel in the way my soul meshes with the beautiful female in my arms, her fright soaking up my strength and security.
Urgency pulls our feet over and down slopes, a ball of dread sitting heavy in each of our hearts.
Miles pass in silence, apprehension growing with each step.
The arrival of a foe so deep in the mountains doesn’t make sense, yet intuition claims we’re the first of our team they’ve come across.
We have to get back to the Sky-Flyer.
Our legs can’t move faster and stay stealthy, but we push harder anyway, our instincts growing with each passing moment.
I fear we’ve royally fucked up somehow.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Anastasia
I can’t eat another bite and he knows it. He leans forward and kisses my cheek before beginning to feed himself. The rest of the food disappears.
We sit for a moment, enjoying each other’s presence while letting our meal digest a bit.
His fingertips draw lazy designs on my thighs and my languidness fades as I realize he’s tracing my stretch marks.
I’m not embarrassed by them for they represent the children I’ll never be able to hold with my corporeal arms, but his attention on my thighs makes me uncomfortable.
He skims over a surprisingly sensitive spot which makes my muscles jump in response.
The poignant pause following my choked noise and flinch makes the hairs stand up on my nape.
My lifemate’s sensual chuckle washes over me milliseconds before he brushes over the sensitive spot again.
My muscles spasm as I try to evade his playful fingers, but he homes in on other delicate flesh, chasing the areas until I struggle to breathe.
Noise bursts from me as I bat at his hands, but he’s relentless.
“Who’d have thought my stern little Omega would have so many ticklish spots?”
His diabolical fingers know exactly how much pressure to apply to make my nerve endings vault into hypersensitivity.
Ungodly sounds wrench from my chest as I wriggle on his lap, enjoying the rough glide of his manhood along my back as I battle his fingers.
“You have the most addictive laugh in the world,” he groans against my neck, his tongue snaking out to caress his bite mark on my shoulder.
Instant lust morphs my blood to lava, my breasts heavy and nipples tight as slick fills his lap.
“Please. Stop.” I manage between gasps and squeals, the conflicting sensations too
