Ben and Jackson returned to the section of the woods where they had left the nuclear scientist and then returned to gather the others.
For the next three trailers, everything went smoothly. No one suspected their entrance, and both Jackson and Ben remained efficient in recovering the other engineers. But when they neared the fourth trailer, they encountered their first problem.
The guards circling the perimeter decided to take an early break and cut through the center of the trailer park, crossing paths with Ben and Jackson. Both parties froze, neither moving as they all waited for the other person to make a move.
Thankfully, Jackson had made the first move, and once the gunfire started, Ben jumped into action.
The trio sped toward the tree line, Ben holding the grenade in his hand, ready to blow the trailer where the nuclear scientist had been working, but then stopped. What was inside was valuable not just to The New Order but to anyone fighting them.
“Ben, let’s go!” Jackson shouted, leading the other engineer to the forest line where they would meet the others.
Ben didn’t hesitate. He pocketed the grenade and then rushed into the portable. It was still empty, all of the schematics and sheets of paper that had been strung up. He grabbed as many of the sheets of paper as he could find, not bother looking at what he was grabbing because he knew he wouldn’t be able to understand it anyway.
One of the guards banged against the door, and Ben shot at him, buying him a few moments. Out of time, Ben shot out the window and leaped through the glass. He landed awkwardly on the ground outside, but he had no idea how much of the glass had scratched him. He chucked the grenade back behind him, into the shattered window, and then made it into the woods before it exploded.
Ben’s adrenaline was amped, and he was so wired from the fight that he didn’t see Jackson and the others until they were halfway to the horses.
Once they all reached the animals, Ben knew that they didn’t have enough horses to carry everybody. And as Jackson hoisted the nuclear scientist onto the back of the animal, the others scrambled to get up.
“What about us?” a man asked.
“Just keep running, and we’ll hold them off as long as we can,” Jackson answered.
Jackson fired back at the enemy who was chasing them into the woods. Ben reached his horse, where two others were clamoring to get on the animal. The horse bucked and reared, stress from all of the frantic energy surrounding it. These animals weren’t used to such excitement.
“Let her go,” Ben yelled, motioning for the people to get away from the horse before it hurt itself.
The escaped engineers and scientists were stuck between being kicked by the horse and shot in the back, and Ben saw the wild fear in everyone’s eyes.
Ben tried to calm the horse down, but the gunfire grew louder and closer as the enemy advanced through the woods.
Ben looked to Jackson, who was still mounted on the horse with the nuclear scientist. As he made his way over, the colonel was barely able to keep control of the animal.
“I’m going to take the scientist farther down the road and come back for people,” Jackson said. “You think you can stay here and hold the ground?”
Ben looked to the other prisoners who were frazzled from the fight. He nodded. “Just make it fast.”
Jackson turned the animal around and kicked its belly, sending it flying through the woods.
Ben had a spare pistol, and he reloaded. “Who here knows how to shoot?”
The three scientists and engineers who had followed Ben remained skittish, and they kept their eyes peeled on the danger that was heading right for them.
“Hey!” Ben shouted, pulling their attention away from the enemy advancing toward him. “I can’t hold them off all on my own. Have any of you handled a weapon before?”
Finally, one of the scientists stepped forward. He nodded shakily and extended his hand for the weapon. “I know how to shoot a little bit.”
Ben handed the pistol over to the man. “What’s your name?”
“Daniel,” he answered.
“Daniel, I need you to go ten feet that way and make sure no one flanks us from your side,” Ben answered, shoving Daniel in the direction he needed him to go. “You hang out by that big tree there, and you don’t move, and you shoot anything that comes your way.” He reached for a few spare magazines and tossed them to Daniel. “You know how to reload?”
Daniel nodded and then ducked from the gunfire.
“Good, now go!” Ben shouted.
Daniel sprinted over to the tree and crouched down behind it for cover. Ben wasn’t sure how good of a shot he was, but so long as he kept firing, it would at least buy them a little time.
“Why can’t we just keep running?” the other engineer asked. “Aren’t we just sitting ducks here?”
“If we keep running, they keep chasing,” Ben answered. “But if we hold our ground, it will slow them down, hopefully, long enough that you can get to safety when Jackson comes back.”
A bullet whizzed by, and Ben pressed himself back up against a tree while the others ducked.
“Just stay down and don’t make yourself a big target,” Ben said.
When Jackson returned, the gunfire between Ben and the encroaching enemy had intensified, but from what Ben could see, the enemy had slowed their advance. Jackson picked up the next scientist and took off.
The enemy had dug their heels in as well, and each time Ben peered around the edge of the tree to take a shot, he never had an opening.
By the time Jackson came back for the
