âNope, sheâs working at the poolâtraining to be a lifeguard. So hopefully we
wonât have to see her too much.â
Colin flattened out the printed e-mail on the table and videotaped it. âThis is
crazy,â he said. âI didnât know girls ever did this kind of thing.â
âBree McKennis does anything she wants,â Jake said. âWhich is why you guys
have to save me. I canât date her! First, itâll be painful and agonizing. Sheâll make me
carry her things and bring her sodas and buy her stuff, and then sheâll yell at me when I
do anything wrong, and then sheâll make fun of me to all her friends behind my back, and
then sheâll dump me and tell everyone what a dork I am and Iâll never get a date in this town ever again. I may not be the worldâs most popular guy, but this will ruin me for the
rest of high school. Remember what she did to Kevin Barkett? Or Alvaro? No, you donât,
because once she was through with them, they disappeared from everyoneâs minds.
Forever.â
âHowever,â said Colin, âshe is really hot. Like, Angelina Jolie-type hot.â
âEw, Colin!â Lexie said, smacking his shoulder.
âShe is!â Colin said. âRight, Jake?â
Jake shrugged. âI guess sheâs okay. Not my type.â
âNot yourâseriously?â
âPersonally, I wouldâve stayed with Jennifer Aniston,â Jake said. âAnd did you
miss the part about the âRules of Dating Breeâ? Does that sound like fun to you? Man, I
knew I shouldnât have met her eyes when she came up to get lemonade. I shouldnât have
agreed to work the concessions stand at graduation in the first place. Now itâs going to be
the worst summer ever.â He slid onto the floor, lay down, and crossed his arms over his
face.
âCanât you just say no?â Colin asked.
âEven I know the answer to that,â Lexie said. âNobody says no to Bree.â Lexie
understood exactly what Jake was worried about. Sheâd been avoiding Bree since
elementary school. If you stayed far under her radar, you could slip by unnoticed and
unharmed, but if you popped into her line of sight in any way, she would rip you to
shreds with one flick of her French-tipped nails.
âDoomed,â Jake muttered. âDoooomed.â
âAll right,â Colin said. âTell her you already have a girlfriend.â
Jake thought for a moment. âLike, long-distance? I donât think sheâll buy that.
Plus itâs only been a week since school ended. Where would I have picked up a girlfriend
in a week?â
âI dunno.â Colin shrugged. âYou could tell her youâre dating Lexie.â
Lexie was so, so, so glad that Colin had his eyes glued to the camera controls and
didnât see her expression. Jake kept his arms over his face, so he didnât notice, either. She
felt like she might faint. There was a really awkward pause, and Lexie wondered if she
was supposed to make a joke here.
She started to say, âAs ifââ at the same time as Jake said, âWell, Iââ and they
both stopped.
âwhat were you going to say?â he asked. He put his arms down and tilted his head
back to look at her.
âUm, just . . . as if sheâll believe that.â
âWhy?â Colin said. Lexie wished Jake would say something, but he just kept
looking at her.
âWell, if you think Bree is out of his league, then Iâm in another solar system,
arenât I?â she tried to joke.
âActually, it might work,â Jake said. Lexie bit her tongue, she was so surprised.
âSure it will,â Colin said. âLexie will be at Summerlodge, too, so Bree can see
youâre together. And itâs only for a little while, until Bree gets over you. And itâs not like
thereâs anyone Lexie wants to date, so youâre hardly putting a dent in her love life. Right,
Lexie?â
Thatâs nice. Thanks, Colin.
âWhat do you say, Lexie?â Jake asked, rolling over onto his stomach and
propping his elbows on the floor and his chin in his hands adorably. âWant to be my
pretend girlfriend?â His eyes were like store clouds, big and unstoppable and irresistible.
Lexie, this is what youâve been dreaming about.
Correction: This is a strange parody of what youâve been dreaming about. Is this
what you really want? Being Jakeâs pretend girlfriend?
Yeah, sure, okay. Close enough!
âOkay,â she said, feeling dizzy. âI mean, itâll be tough pretending to like you, but
I guess I can take one for the team. Right?â
âYouâre my knight in shining armor,â Jake said, getting up and kneeling on the
couch next to her. Right next to her. âMy hero, my warrior princess,â he said, taking her hand. âMy King Kong.â He pressed her hand to his heart. She could actually feel it
beating through the soft fabric of his shirt. It was going really fast. Nearly as fast as hers,
but he was an athlete, so it probably went that fast all the time.
âOkay, here are the Rules of Pretend Dating Lexie,â she said. âYou need to stop
comparing me to a giant gorilla.â
âWhat are the other rules?â he asked. He was still holding her hand against his
chest.
âThatâs the only one,â she said. Was her voice shaking? Could he tell? âSo far.
Iâll keep you posted as others come up.â
He grinned. âIâll look forward to it.â
âOkay,â Colin said, standing up. âI think Iâve figured out how to change it to
night recording. Letâs go test it in the shed.â He picked up a flashlight and headed for the
stairs. Lexie couldnât believe her own twin hadnât noticed how much she was blushing.
She wanted to stay where she was forever, but she pulled her hand free and scrambled off
the couch.
âGreat, okay,â she said. âSounds like fun.â She looked back from the doorway.
âComing, Jake?â
âYou bet,â he said, standing up and stretching. âWhere my girlfriend goes, I go.â
Lexie shivered.
I always thought my first boyfriend would be Jake. But I never thought it would be
pretend . . . .
