âDo we know of any other places Celia has attacked this time, other than at the Red Palm and the Holmwood Hotel?â Dara asked Kiefer, steering the conversation back on track.
âYeah, actually,â he said. âIâve got some laptops at home. Iâm linked into every hospital in the Houston metroâso I can keep an eye on admissions and check for anything wonky. I ran a quick search before coming over here. Within the past few days thereâve been a few people who came in with wounds on their necks. I cross-referenced with recent police reports and found a couple places where these people said theyâd been âattacked.â No one mentioned fangs or anything, so itâs possible, of course, that they were just mugged or something, but itâs also possible at least some of âem were vampire vics, and the details were just omitted.â
âShould we just go to some of these places?â Jessica asked. âWatch and see whatâs going on? See if any vampires show up?â
âItâs not a bad idea,â Kiefer said, âbut thereâs something else I think we might want to try first, and thatâs figuring out who dug up Celia in the first place.â
Nathan looked at his friend with interest. âYou have a lead?â
Kieferâs eyes glinted. âI might. See, when those Snacks were kicking the crap out of me, I managed to slip a token into one of their jacket pockets.â
Now Nathan looked excited, standing up straighter next to the kitchen counter.
âWhatâs a token?â Jessica asked.
âJust a little circle of metal,â Kiefer said, âbut itâs enchanted. If I cast a certain spell, whoeverâs got the disc on them will be compelled to come straight back to me. Theyâll have no choice about it. No passing Go, and no collecting two hundred dollars. Not unless someone else takes the coin off them and breaks the spell.â
âWe can restrain this person when he arrives,â Nathan added, âask him if he and his companion were the ones who went to Celiaâs grave and, if so, question him about who sent them there and why. Whoever ordered her release may very well have the master vampire with them now.â
Jessica looked at Kiefer. âYou can do that?â she gasped, sounding impressed.
âI can do all sorts of things,â Kiefer told her, flashing his dimple. âBut Nathan hereâs not a big fan of magic.â
âParticularly the sort that involves compulsion,â Nathan admitted. âBut in this case, I concede that it may be necessary.â
âWait,â Lucy held up her hands. âThe, uh, Snack would come here? To my apartment? Heâs not going to trash the place like he did Kieferâs office, is he?â Again, she thought about her rent deposit.
âWe wouldnât let him do that, maâam,â Kiefer assured her.
âMaybe not,â Aaron hooked his arm over the back of Lucyâs chair, âbut then heâll know where Lucy lives. Which means heâll be able to come back here and hurt her later if he wants. That is, assuming youâre not going to kill this thug once youâre done interrogating him-?â
âAbsolutely not,â Nathan said. âThis minion may be in thrall to a vampire, but he is still human. We do not kill people.â
âWe could erase the guyâs memory after weâre done,â Kiefer said to Lucy. âMake sure he doesnât remember where you live. Although Nathan doesnât like that spell, either.â He cast a glance at his vampire friend. âHe gets twitchy about anything that involves messing around with peopleâs minds. Which, unfortunately, is just about every form of magic I know.â
âI donât like it, either,â Jason said. He was sitting back in his chair with his arms crossed. âThe plan to bring this guy here, I mean. Aaronâs right that itâs too dangerous for a thug like that to know where Lucy lives. What if the mind-erasing spell doesnât work, and he does come back for her later?â He shook his head. âI wouldnât let you summon him to my apartment, I can tell you that much.â
Lucy looked at Jason in surprise. He didnât know her at all, and yet he sounded deeply concerned about her safety. He looked worried, too, his brows gathered darkly over his eyes. And it wasnât only him, she noticed. Dara, Jessica, Nathan, and of course Aaron, whoâd brought up the issue in the first place, were also all nodding in agreement. Lucy couldnât help but feel touched by their collective concern. It made her feel betterâsafer and more confidentâto know everyone here had her best interests at heart.
Kiefer looked at Jason. âMy spells always work,â he said, but without acrimony. âBut I understand your misgivings. Maybe we should all just go somewhere else to do this magic, then?â
âHow about the donut shop?â Dara suggested. âThese people already know where that is, anyway.â
âTrue,â Nathan said, âbut there is another place I think might be safer.â He and Kiefer exchanged a glance, and Kiefer flinched.
âIâm not sure, man,â he said. âNo offense to your new friends here, butâŠthe safehouse? Weâve never let anyone know where that is. Thatâs what makes it, you know, safe.â
Lucy watched the former vampire with interest. Obviously, he didnât share her trust in the group, but she could understand why. Heâd seen and experienced a lot more weirdness in his life than any of the rest of them, with the possible exception of Nathan. It wasnât surprising heâd be wary of a group of strangers, no matter who they were.
âYou shouldnât feel pressured to show us anything you donât want to, Kiefer,â she told him. âI vote for the donut shop, too.â
âYeah,â Jason said, âI agree. After all, weâre just a bunch of random ladies and two strange vampires you just met. I probably wouldnât trust us either. Letâs go to this donut shop.â He glanced at Dara. âAlthough, why a donut place
