private life has nothing to do with you.ā€

Justinā€™s eyes blazed. ā€œIt is when it affects my company. Iā€”ā€

ā€œAnd there we have it. Your company.ā€ Blake scowled. ā€œWhatever happened to ā€˜itā€™s your company, sonā€™? ā€˜Put your stamp on it.ā€™ Does any of this ring a bell?ā€ Justinā€™s gaze lowered and Blake jutted out his chin. ā€œWell, I did all that, Dad, and more. So please, tell me how me being gay is going to affect the company for one second.ā€

There was a long silence as the two men faced each other. Will was aware of the whole team watching the spectacle. He walked to Blakeā€™s side and slipped his hand around Blakeā€™s. Blake gave him a quick grateful glance. Justin said nothing, his throat working as he swallowed. Will held his breath, waiting for Justinā€™s reaction. When it became clear he wasnā€™t about to say anything, Blakeā€™s hand tightened around his.

ā€œYou know what? Iā€™ve had it.ā€ Blake snapped out the words. ā€œIf youā€™re not prepared to acknowledge everything Iā€™ve done during the last six years, then Iā€™m out of here. You can keep your precious company.ā€ Will gaped.

ā€œYouā€™re not serious.ā€ Justinā€™s eyes goggled.

ā€œWatch me.ā€ Blake stared resolutely at him.

Justinā€™s jaw dropped. ā€œButā€¦but what will you do?ā€

Blake barked out a laugh. ā€œThatā€™s easy. Iā€™ll start up my own publishing company.ā€

ā€œAnd where the boss goes, we go.ā€ Ed came to stand beside Blake, flinging his arm around his shoulder. ā€œRight, guys?ā€ There were murmurs as Blakeā€™s team moved as one to stand behind him, all eyes on Justin. Will was so proud of them for this show of solidarity. He glanced at his lover and was dismayed to see him tremble.

ā€œIs that what you really want, Dad?ā€ Blakeā€™s voice softened. ā€œAre you prepared to lose everything this company has gained, just because youā€™re ashamed to have a gay son?ā€

Justinā€™s eyes widened in alarm. ā€œWaitā€¦ you think Iā€™m ashamed of you?ā€

ā€œWell, what else am I supposed to think?ā€ The misery in Blakeā€™s expression tore at Willā€™s heart.

Justin shook his head. ā€œForgive me, Blake. For my generation, being gay was something you didnā€™t shout about. I know itā€™s all different these days, but I guess Iā€™m still stuck in the past. Iā€™ll be honest, my first reaction was to wonder how the company would be perceived if it became known that its owner was gay.ā€

Blake snorted. ā€œNo one will bat an eye, I promise you.ā€ He became still. ā€œYouā€¦ you donā€™t mind that Iā€™m gay?ā€ Will saw the hopeful light in Blakeā€™s eyes and held his breath, praying for Justinā€™s reaction.

ā€œOf course I donā€™t mind.ā€ Justin fixed his gaze on his son. ā€œAll right, so itā€™s something I didnā€™t expect, but it doesnā€™t change how I feel about you.ā€ He tilted his head. ā€œWhy would you think you being gay would bother me?ā€

Blakeā€™s mouth fell open. ā€œButā€¦ but what about Uncle Dominic?ā€

Justin frowned. ā€œI donā€™t understand. What does your uncle have to do with any of this?ā€

Blake stared in amazement. ā€œI remember how you were whenever he came round to see me. You couldnā€™t stand to be in the same room as him.ā€

Justin burst into laughter. ā€œOh, Blake.ā€ He shook his head, smiling sadly. ā€œI couldnā€™t stand to be near him, youā€™re right, not because he was gay, but because he was an obnoxious son of a bitch!ā€

Blakeā€™s expression was incredulous. ā€œWhat?ā€

Justin scowled. ā€œThat bastard was always asking for money. He drank like a fish and was forever running up bad debts. He owed money to nearly every betting shop in London at one point.ā€ He stared with wide eyes to see Blakeā€™s face. ā€œYou really thought I didnā€™t like gays?ā€ When Blake nodded numbly, Justinā€™s face fell. ā€œThat tells me how much weā€™ve grown apartā€”and that saddens me immensely.ā€

Blake blinked. ā€œButā€¦ what about your reaction to Trinity publishing gay fiction? I thought you were against it?ā€

Justin sighed. ā€œNo, that wasnā€™t it. I was just nervous that it wouldnā€™t pay off. And then weā€™re back to the whole ā€˜older generationā€™ bit again.ā€ He locked eyes with his son. ā€œYou were right, of course. The genre is growing ever more popular. It was the right decisionā€”only one is a long line of good decisions, I have to say.ā€ He moved closer to Blake and Ed stepped back, allowing him access. Justin grasped Blakeā€™s shoulder firmly. ā€œIā€™m proud of you, son.ā€

The look of joy in Blakeā€™s eyes was almost too much to bear. Will fought hard to hold back tears. ā€œDad?ā€

Justin became still. ā€œYes, son. I should have said this a long time ago. And I think I clung on to the company when I should have made a clean break of it.ā€ He placed his hands on Blakeā€™s shoulders and regarded him squarely. ā€œBut we can do something about that.ā€

Will hardly dared breathe as he saw the hopeful expression on Blakeā€™s face.

Justin smiled. ā€œI think itā€™s time we made this official, donā€™t you? Iā€™ll prepare a press statement for tomorrow, to the effect that you are the legal owner of Trinity Publishing, and have been solely in charge of the company for the last six years. Think of it as your Christmas present.ā€ He winked, but then his expression changed. ā€œIā€™m sorry to have spoken so disparagingly of your team, Blake. The way they all rallied round you was truly wonderful. You chose a fine bunch of people, son.ā€ He fixed the team with a forthright stare. ā€œAnd I believe youā€™re supposed to be having a party here, so why donā€™t you good people get it started while I take my son and hisā€¦partner into his office for a talk?ā€ He winked. ā€œWe wonā€™t be longā€”wouldnā€™t want to miss you opening your gifts!ā€

There were smiles all round as Justin led Blake and Will to Blakeā€™s office and then closed the door behind them. Blake seemed to be in a dream. He kept staring at his father openmouthed, blinking. Justin regarded him with a hint of anxiety in his expression.

ā€œAre you all right, son?ā€

Will reached out and
