Justinās eyes blazed. āIt is when it affects my company. Iāā
āAnd there we have it. Your company.ā Blake scowled. āWhatever happened to āitās your company, sonā? āPut your stamp on it.ā Does any of this ring a bell?ā Justinās gaze lowered and Blake jutted out his chin. āWell, I did all that, Dad, and more. So please, tell me how me being gay is going to affect the company for one second.ā
There was a long silence as the two men faced each other. Will was aware of the whole team watching the spectacle. He walked to Blakeās side and slipped his hand around Blakeās. Blake gave him a quick grateful glance. Justin said nothing, his throat working as he swallowed. Will held his breath, waiting for Justinās reaction. When it became clear he wasnāt about to say anything, Blakeās hand tightened around his.
āYou know what? Iāve had it.ā Blake snapped out the words. āIf youāre not prepared to acknowledge everything Iāve done during the last six years, then Iām out of here. You can keep your precious company.ā Will gaped.
āYouāre not serious.ā Justinās eyes goggled.
āWatch me.ā Blake stared resolutely at him.
Justinās jaw dropped. āButā¦but what will you do?ā
Blake barked out a laugh. āThatās easy. Iāll start up my own publishing company.ā
āAnd where the boss goes, we go.ā Ed came to stand beside Blake, flinging his arm around his shoulder. āRight, guys?ā There were murmurs as Blakeās team moved as one to stand behind him, all eyes on Justin. Will was so proud of them for this show of solidarity. He glanced at his lover and was dismayed to see him tremble.
āIs that what you really want, Dad?ā Blakeās voice softened. āAre you prepared to lose everything this company has gained, just because youāre ashamed to have a gay son?ā
Justinās eyes widened in alarm. āWaitā¦ you think Iām ashamed of you?ā
āWell, what else am I supposed to think?ā The misery in Blakeās expression tore at Willās heart.
Justin shook his head. āForgive me, Blake. For my generation, being gay was something you didnāt shout about. I know itās all different these days, but I guess Iām still stuck in the past. Iāll be honest, my first reaction was to wonder how the company would be perceived if it became known that its owner was gay.ā
Blake snorted. āNo one will bat an eye, I promise you.ā He became still. āYouā¦ you donāt mind that Iām gay?ā Will saw the hopeful light in Blakeās eyes and held his breath, praying for Justinās reaction.
āOf course I donāt mind.ā Justin fixed his gaze on his son. āAll right, so itās something I didnāt expect, but it doesnāt change how I feel about you.ā He tilted his head. āWhy would you think you being gay would bother me?ā
Blakeās mouth fell open. āButā¦ but what about Uncle Dominic?ā
Justin frowned. āI donāt understand. What does your uncle have to do with any of this?ā
Blake stared in amazement. āI remember how you were whenever he came round to see me. You couldnāt stand to be in the same room as him.ā
Justin burst into laughter. āOh, Blake.ā He shook his head, smiling sadly. āI couldnāt stand to be near him, youāre right, not because he was gay, but because he was an obnoxious son of a bitch!ā
Blakeās expression was incredulous. āWhat?ā
Justin scowled. āThat bastard was always asking for money. He drank like a fish and was forever running up bad debts. He owed money to nearly every betting shop in London at one point.ā He stared with wide eyes to see Blakeās face. āYou really thought I didnāt like gays?ā When Blake nodded numbly, Justinās face fell. āThat tells me how much weāve grown apartāand that saddens me immensely.ā
Blake blinked. āButā¦ what about your reaction to Trinity publishing gay fiction? I thought you were against it?ā
Justin sighed. āNo, that wasnāt it. I was just nervous that it wouldnāt pay off. And then weāre back to the whole āolder generationā bit again.ā He locked eyes with his son. āYou were right, of course. The genre is growing ever more popular. It was the right decisionāonly one is a long line of good decisions, I have to say.ā He moved closer to Blake and Ed stepped back, allowing him access. Justin grasped Blakeās shoulder firmly. āIām proud of you, son.ā
The look of joy in Blakeās eyes was almost too much to bear. Will fought hard to hold back tears. āDad?ā
Justin became still. āYes, son. I should have said this a long time ago. And I think I clung on to the company when I should have made a clean break of it.ā He placed his hands on Blakeās shoulders and regarded him squarely. āBut we can do something about that.ā
Will hardly dared breathe as he saw the hopeful expression on Blakeās face.
Justin smiled. āI think itās time we made this official, donāt you? Iāll prepare a press statement for tomorrow, to the effect that you are the legal owner of Trinity Publishing, and have been solely in charge of the company for the last six years. Think of it as your Christmas present.ā He winked, but then his expression changed. āIām sorry to have spoken so disparagingly of your team, Blake. The way they all rallied round you was truly wonderful. You chose a fine bunch of people, son.ā He fixed the team with a forthright stare. āAnd I believe youāre supposed to be having a party here, so why donāt you good people get it started while I take my son and hisā¦partner into his office for a talk?ā He winked. āWe wonāt be longāwouldnāt want to miss you opening your gifts!ā
There were smiles all round as Justin led Blake and Will to Blakeās office and then closed the door behind them. Blake seemed to be in a dream. He kept staring at his father openmouthed, blinking. Justin regarded him with a hint of anxiety in his expression.
āAre you all right, son?ā
Will reached out and
