“What part of ‘not talkingto you’ don’t you understand?”
I cleared my throat. “Uh,girls….”
“What?” they said andturned to me simultaneously.
My head swam, and I blinked a fewtimes before squinting. “You called me a fairy….”
They shot strange looks at each other. The younger sister made a sweeping motion with her hand to hertwin. “Go ahead; I know how you love to baby the brokenones.”
“Touch your ears,” Ameliasaid.
Frowning, I did as she said, confusedas to what she was getting at. I touched my ears pointing out of myhair. I froze and my fingers twitched over the tip of my ear thatwas decidedly pointy. Then I was aware of the two limbs restingacross my back and then floor. I was aware of the tail curlingabout my waist. My heart pounded and I squeezed my eyes shut. “I– Ifeel sick–” I gasped; memories hit me in the gut and bombarded mymind. My eyes shot open. “Alec!” I shouted and stood. I spun roundand launched myself at the door, a moment after I remembered theiron manacle. I jerked to a stop and lost my footing. I fell hardand smacked my head on the floor. I felt the skin at my templesplit.
“Be still, fairy. If youmake too much noise they’ll come.” Amelia touched my shoulder and Ishrugged her off violently.
Surging up to my knees, I crawled awayfrom them and put my back against the wall.
I remembered everything. I wasprotecting Alec and had been tagged by the Clerics. Me dropped bytazer probes … how could I be so stupid? Why was I not focusing onwhat was going on around me? How the hell did they get so far intothe Pride? Something was no right here and I needed to find outwhat.
“I need out of this hole,”I growled.
“Oh, don’t worry,” Nimahsaid. “No doubt they’ll be back for you soon. You’re the newplaything.” She shot me a dirty look, and tipped her nose up. “Nowyou seem to have returned to yourself answer my question. Why isthe scent of our Alpha on you?” She crossed her sinewy arms overher chest tightly. Unlike Amelia she had a heavy fringe that fellinto her eyes. “I thought I scented Alec, and you seem to know him,but that’s just crazy talk. Why would his scent linger on you? Forit to be so strong there would need to be prolonged skin to skincontact.” She glared at me. Was this shifter-girl the one Alecconfessed he wished to Claim? But he had told me she didn’t know heexisted.
“Oh, shut up, Ni. Leave thepoor girl alone.”
A startling thought occurred to me.“I’m a demon,” I said and blinked. I was still struggling toadjust, and though these girls seemed to need some answers from me,I was still running a few things through my clouded mind. Where wasAlec now? Was Breandan looking for me, and how long had I been downhere? Oh gods. How long had I been down here? Conall would be goingnuts. And as for Breandan…. Yeah, I was in big trouble.
“Yes,” Nimah promoted, jarring me out of my horrified thoughts. “You’re a….” I saidnothing, still shocked and confused. Witheringly, she looked atAmelia.
I looked too. I could use somedirection.
“Fairy,” shesaid.
At the expression that twisted myface, they both tensed and shuffled closer together. They waitedfor my shriek, or yell, but it never happened. The twins watchedme, heads cocked together. It was like there was a mirror but thereflections differed slightly. Amelia’s face was a smidge rounderand Nimah’s eyes were a fraction darker.
“They must have hit youwith a high voltage to screw with your memory so badly,” Ameliasaid after a terse pause. “Don’t worry, it’ll get clearersoon.”
“She’s still hasn’texplained why she smells like members of our pack,” the young twinsaid bluntly.
Running a hand down her hunched backin comfort, Amelia’s voice was hard. “Give her time. She has beenthrough a lot. Remember how you were when we first gothere?”
The younger twin wiggled, to get hersister to back off, but she kept stroking so shestilled.
My hands flew up and out. “Unguh, theydid hit me too hard.” I smacked myself on the forehead. “You’reByron’s missing daughters, aren’t you?”
“So you do know ourfather.” Amelia shifted forward, a light coming on in her eyes.“He’s coming for us?”
I nodded. “Yes. We had a deal. I’mgoing to rescue you.” As I said the words, I flushed. “I mean, uh,I was going to rescue you before I was caught, ofcourse.”
Nimah was watching me, distrust plainon her face. “I don’t believe you. Our father would never ask thefairy-lord for help. And involve one of his concubines? I don’tthink so.”
I spluttered, “Concubine? Give me abreak. I’m not Devlin’s concubine. My name is Rae, andI’m–”
The door shuddered.
Nimah and Amelia instinctively slidcloser together. Both turned their gaze upon me and I saw panic intheir eyes. Even Runt had turned to look at me, and if possible, his face was even paler than before.
The door swung open and slammedagainst the back wall. Three figures in crimson blazers with blacktails stood in the doorway. Hoods pulled over their heads, thelight, and my eyesight was enough for me to make them out. All weremuch older than us. Men. One had sunken eyes and a crooked nose. The other was fair and stunningly handsome, for a human. The lastwas stockier in build and rougher in appearance; stubble wasvisible on his jaw and his blazer looked rumbled. I thought I saw afaint trace of guilt flitter across his expression, but then it wasgone, and his expression was blank.
Amelia shuffled forward and crouchedin front of me. She arched her back and hissed, sounding like acat, a cat that was pissed. Nimah came up on my otherside.
“Good thinking, Melia,” shemuttered. “Throw our lot in with the fairy stupid enough to getcaught.”
The Clerics stepped forward and Ifigured out my next move. The iron had drained my strength, nodoubt. I was weak, disorientated, and the stench of the metal mademe retch, but I had been trained in combat by these Clerics. I knewhow they would move and fight. If we could overwhelm them, we couldescape. I may not get another chance.
