Kaily tried to remove the sudden frown on her face before Sari saw it. She was not successful. She didn't like the comment. There was, after all, far too many women talking to her dark warrior, and every one of them appeared to be vying for his undivided attention. She didn't like how it made her feel. She didn't like she felt a pang of jealousy. She didn't have a right to be jealous and she knew it, but she was. He didn't acknowledge her. She didn't like how she felt about that either.
"I'm teasing you," Sari said her tone turning serious. "It's understandable that you would be attracted to him. Moto draws a fair amount of attention."
"So, I've noticed," Kaily said before she could stop herself. There was yet another woman who joined the group, and another. She knew she shouldn't care, but she did.
Sari gave her a reassuring rub on her back. "You have nothing to worry about." She leaned close to Kaily and spoke in a hushed tone. "Moto has eyes only for you."
"I'm not so sure." Kaily frowned. True her dark warrior traveled to her world, but she didn't know why. He left her with the Agenors, although he showed up when she needed him most. For all she knew, he didn't even know she was there until that day he rescued her. She didn't know how she came to the Agenors in the first place. She knew the how involved the doorway, but not the exact mechanics of how it worked. It didn't make sense that he took her there only to rescue her later. She blamed her dark warrior, but in reality, didn't know if he was the reason, she found herself on Ki. She did know he could take her back home and didn't. That she could hold against him.
She looked back to the group he was a part of and sighed. In the forest she felt an intense attraction between them. She thought he felt it too, at least, she hoped he felt it. They didn't have any kind of lengthy conversation. She wanted answers to her many questions and only he could give her the answers she needed. Assuming she could get him alone long enough to ask the questions, and assuming she could find the courage to demand the answers, real answers that made sense to her. She suspected he wouldn't say anything unless he wanted to and nothing she could say or do would change that. It was a feeling only, but a strong one. She signed again before she could stop herself.
"Trust me, Kaily, Moto's eyes are set on you and only you. No one has ever drawn his interest the way you have." Sari said. "Ever."
Kaily looked back at Sari. "How do you know?"
"You're here."
Kaily shook her head. "That is not an answer. It tells me nothing."
"On the contrary, Kaily, it tells you everything."
Kaily glanced down at her mug and its contents. She didn't feel as certain as Sari appeared to be. She went back to watching her dark warrior although she tried to be more discrete by turning her attention to the others as well. She finished the contents of her mug and set it next to her discarded plate. She listened to the music that started up and drifted in the background of the other village noises. The children played and laughed together. The adults talked and appeared to enjoy being there with their fellow villagers. It was peaceful and comfortable in a way that Kaily wouldn't have expected. She sat on the edges, and aside from Sari and Shimani, no one else spoke to her, but still, she found herself enjoying the evening more than she suspected she would. This was something she could get used to. "Sari?"
"Yes?"
"I see the woman and children eating, but the males don't appear to be eating anything. Did they eat already?" Kaily asked.
Sari shook her head. "No, our society is matriarchal."
"I did notice that." Kaily said. "Shimani sat and ate with me earlier this morning."
"The men will set and eat with their bonded mates and children for earlier repasts in the day, but for the evening repast, it is a bit more structured. The women and children's needs are seen to first." She pointed to a group of men going around and gathering the empty plates and filling empty mugs. She then indicated the Queen and group of women sitting with her. The children and other villagers moved away at that point. "The Chosen see to the Queen's needs and tonight the Shanees needs as well. At least those who remained seated with Queen Shakti."
Kaily observed the ones she knew to be Kesho and Baridi taking empty plates and refilling the mugs similar to the other groups. "I saw many of the women getting their own food." Kaily said.
"Most of us do prefer to choose our own."
Kaily watched as Shimani handed something to a child of maybe three years old, and then whisper something to her. She turned her attention back to Sari. "I didn't notice Shimani serving anyone." She didn't notice her dark warrior serve anyone either, but she didn't want to voice that to Sari.
"Shimani and Moto have been excused from those duties for this evening's repast."
Kaily frowned. "Shimani did get my plate earlier."
Sari nodded. "You are in his care while you are among us."
"So, the males are servants?"
"I would not use that word within Moto's presence or hearing." Sari said with a laugh. "No, the men are not our servants. Everyone has duties and responsibilities. Shimani has been assigned to you and thus his other duties and responsibilities have been assigned to the others. Moto has been excused from those duties for this evening's repast for other reasons." Sari didn't give any explanation as to why, and Kaily didn't ask. "The men eat after, but they do grab
