I would.”

“I could take the train to Albany on Friday afternoons. That’s only what, like an hour from here?”

He nodded. “I could absolutely pick you up in Albany.”

“I could work on the train and while you’re teaching.”

“I can teach you to ride, too, if you want to learn.”

“Once my ankle’s healed, I’m willing to give it another shot.”

“Then I guess we’ve got the next several weeks sorted out,” he said, and even though she couldn’t see his face, she could hear the smile in his voice.

With a sigh, she closed her eyes and snuggled into him.

“Oh God, baby! I’m gonna come! Shit!”

Sebastian clenched his jaw, trying to last though Kayla’s orgasm as he moved above her, her legs wound around his thrusting hips. She looked so beautiful, falling apart in his arms. So beautiful it almost hurt to look at her, like staring at the sun. Her pussy fluttered around him, pulling him deeper and he fell over the edge, his cock pulsing, his entire body on fire as he came.

“Kayla,” he moaned, crushing his mouth to hers, his thrusts gradually slowing to a deep, circular grind as she rode out the last of her orgasm. She wound her arms around his neck, holding him close as they kissed, their bodies intertwined as they moved together. He felt drained, but in a good way. Like after a hard workout or a challenging day of riding. And it was no wonder, given how many times they’d had sex over the past twenty-four hours.

How the hell had it only been twenty-four hours? Being locked away together, isolated from everyone and everything but each other had this weird way of accelerating time.

Honestly, it felt like a honeymoon. One he didn’t want to end, but the clock was quickly ticking down, especially with the sound of snow removal equipment rumbling in the distance, cleaning up the resort.

He broke the kiss and gently eased his sated cock out of her. After he’d disposed of the condom, he returned to their nest in front of the fire, made of pillows and throw blankets and the duvet from his bed. After they’d woken from their nap, they’d had dinner, then snuggled on the couch, watching one of the DVDs in the cabin. About halfway through, they’d ended up making out like teenagers on the couch, kissing and grinding.

Make love to me in front of the fire.

That had been Kayla’s request, one he’d been happy to oblige. When his woman asked him to make love to her, he wasn’t ever going to say no.

His woman. That’s what she’d become over the past day, hadn’t she? They’d started off as adversaries, but once they’d given in to the chemistry burning between them, they’d quickly morphed into something else. Something much, much more than work rivals or former colleagues or even friends.

With Kayla snuggled against him, a fierce wave of protectiveness surged through him, and he held her a little tighter. For her, he was willing to face his demons head on and slay them. She was so strong, so giving, so beautifully open and vulnerable with him that he wanted to be everything she needed and more. The way she looked at him, kissed him, held him, listened to him made him feel like he was worth a damn. She’d taken a chance on him even after everything he’d done. He’d showed her his scars and instead of running, she’d held him closer, making him feel seen and cared for in a way he hadn’t anticipated.

“Will you tell me about how you grew up?” he asked. He wanted to know everything about her. Wanted every single piece of her that she was willing to share with him.

She sighed, her fingers weaving through his chest hair. A day, and he was already addicted to the way she touched him. But unlike gambling, this was an addiction he was happy to indulge.

“It was just me and my mom. I don’t have any brothers or sisters, and my father left when I was two. I wouldn’t recognize him if I passed him on the street.”

“I’m sorry. That sounds shitty,” he said, kissing the top of her head.

“It was. We were always right on the edge of not having enough money. There was food on the table and the lights were on, but it was a struggle if another expense came up. Money was always tight. Always. And so mom decided that the best solution to that was to marry someone who’d take care of us.”

Apprehension tightened Sebastian’s chest. “Based on your tone, I’m guessing things didn’t work out that way.”

“No. My mom got married three times before my eighteenth birthday, and each guy was a total loser. A loser who could help us pay the bills, but a loser still. I just wanted to get out of there, so I focused on school, on getting a scholarship so I could go to college and leave that behind me. I had this plan…” She trailed off, shaking her head. “It sounds so stupid now, when I say it out loud. But I had this plan, my Perfect Life Plan, with steps and everything. And if I just followed the steps, my life would turn out better than my mom’s. I’d do everything I could to avoid making the same mistakes she had.”

“What was on your plan?”

She shrugged. “Go to school on a scholarship, get a degree, get a good job, marry Mr. Perfect.”

His mouth went a little dry. “Mr. Perfect, huh?” While he was trying to get his life sorted out, he was far from Mr. Perfect and probably always would be.

She let out a little laugh. “I told you it was stupid. We don’t always get to choose who we fall for.” A silence, heavy with meaning, hung between them. She cleared her throat softly and continued speaking. “I think that’s why I never had any successful relationships. I was always trying to date a resume, not a person.
