Orinâs eyes darted around the lab. He found Ky staring back at him, smiling. âExcuse me, sir?â said Orin. âWhere am I?â He struggled against his restraints. âWhatâs going on?â
Ky chuckled. âAinât that somethinââŠâ

Casey piloted the shuttle away from the asteroid, and April stifled a yawn as she stared at the stars. âHow much did we get for him?â asked April. She bit down on a hangnail.
âThirty thousand. Not bad, considering.â
âThree hundred thousand wouldâve been better. Thatâs what we wouldâve gotten if weâd delivered him to the lab, ourselves.â
Casey sought Aprilâs eyes, but her cousin looked away. âNot if it cost us our lives. Whatâs gotten into you?â
âNothing,â April sighed.
Over the commlink, KranĂ© said, âExcuse me, Captain. Ky Rego transmitted the coordinates to his starship.â
âIs he close?â asked Casey.
âLess than a two-hour flight from our current position,â said KranĂ©. âShall I transmit the coordinates to you so we can all meet there?â
âSure, thank you.â Casey studied April. âActually, belay that. Maintain your current position.â
âAye, Captain,â said KranĂ©. âAwaiting orders.â
Casey ended the call and pivoted to face April directly. âSeriously, are you okay? I donât think Iâve ever seen you this gloomy after a job before.â
April smiled slightly, and she shrugged. âI will be.â Her heart pounded a bit harder. âI canât be your first mate anymore.â
Casey paused. âYouâre joking, right?â
âYou can drop me off somewhere on Rhyon. Iâll find my way.â
âI canât tell if youâre joking or not,â said Casey.
April looked at her with a mix of fury and tears in her eyes. âWhat do you think?â
âOh.â Casey swallowed hard. âWhy?â
âYouâve been knocked too far off course,â said April. âDoing the right thing used to matter to you, but after what you just did, itâs clear to me youâre only capable of drawing upon your courage when you no longer require it. Though it saddens me to bid farewell, I will never serve under a captain without principles.â
Casey nodded. âI see.â
âGood.â April dabbed her eyes with her sleeve. âIâm glad.â She tabbed through a list of Rhyondan starports.
In her periphery, Casey noticed an orange light blinking with increasing urgency. âCan you do one more thing for me?â
âMaybe. It depends on what it is,â said April.
âThe proximity alarmâs just been triggered, but the sirens arenât working. Can you ask Cajun to look into that?â
April sat forward. âProximity alarm? I thought this place was abandoned.â Her fingers danced across the console.
âI thought so, too,â said Casey.
Scanners displayed a warthog-shaped starship on approach. âItâs a short-range shuttle,â said April. âHeavily armored.â Portions of the systems schematics flashed red. âIâm detecting active weapons and magazines.â She looked aghast at her cousin. âPirates! It must be. What are pirates doing out here?â
âRocksaughâs been abandoned for a long time,â said Casey. âMaybe itâs their hideout.â
April shook her head, poring over the data. âDonât be absurd. See if you can find the shuttleâs point of origin.â
Casey regarded her questioningly. âHey, Iâm still the captain, here. You donât give the give the orders. I do.â
April glanced at her sidelong. âYouâre not my captain. Not anymore.â
Wincing slightly, Casey nodded. âRight. Point of origin,â she muttered, and she worked her half of the console. After a moment, a trajectory map appeared in place of the shuttle diagram. It led directly to a massive vessel outlined in red. âThe starship Excrucio,â said Casey, and she studied the vesselâs transponder information. âGobthar Veskgron is the owner and captain, and⊠Excrucio is a Colima-class battlecruiser.â Casey looked nervous. âIâm getting a lot of accompanying pings on the scannerâstarfighters, mostly. Thereâs also a dreadnought, two missile cruisers, and four frigates. It looks like sheâs part of a flotilla.â
âDefinitely pirates,â said April. After a quick search, she found hundreds of Rhyondan newscasts related to the warshipâs captain. She selected the most recent one for playback.
From aboard the smoking remains of a gutted starship, a spacesuit-clad journalist reported. âWith a seemingly insatiable appetite for violence, Gobthar Veskgron claims personal responsibility for this latest senseless massacre. More commonly known as Blacktusk, he is perhaps the most dreaded space pirate ever to plague the stars of Rhyon. His fleet is responsible for countless acts of terrorâlike this oneâdirected against Monarch Cruisesâ own starliner, the SS Champion.â
The camera operator panned along scorched passageways, pausing to showcase several rows of blurred heads skewered on pikes. âDespite his brazen attacks on vital shipping lanes, federal authorities are slow to act. While local authorities claim they lack the resources to mount a meaningful response, itâs well known they are far too terrified of his notoriously brutal acts of reprisal to challenge him.â The operator returned the cameraâs focus to the journalist.
âRecently, Blacktusk has made several attempts to recruit powerful binaries to his cause. Should he succeed, his reign of terror would be unequaled, and scenes like this one could become commonplace.â
April paused the playback and cast her cousin a seething glare. âI wonder why heâs here!â
âNo, because Ky promised. He wouldnât dare!â
âAt least you got your thirty thousand,â said April.
Casey opened the navigation console and recalled Rocksaughâs coordinates. She gripped the controls and turned her vessel about.
âWhat are you doing?â asked April.
Casey offered a determined smile in response. âIâm changing course.â

Ky led Orin down the boarding ramp. From all around, warning lights spun, and broken alarms cried out in warped tones. âRinshi, gonna need you to wait right here,â said Ky. âIâm fixinâ to inject the imprintinâ agent, and I donât wanna confuse the poor boy any more âan he already is.â
âYou got it, boss,â said Rinshi, and he stopped halfway down the ramp.
Ky shoved Orin forward, prodding him with his blaster pistol. Moments later, the warthog-shaped shuttle taxied into the space where Caseyâs shuttle had been, and she docked. Heavy armor plates covered her fuselage, and
