âThat remains to be seen.â
I screwed up my nose. The longer I was in this place, the crazier it became. Everyone seemed to have their own motivesâthe Codex, Arondight, power, Light, influence, secret liaisons⊠Where did it start, and more importantly, where did it end? Evil geniuses always had an end game. What was Wilderâs?
âIf I knew where it was, what would you do?â I asked, watching him closely.
He didnât reply, which annoyed the hell out of me. He was weighing up his options before he gave me the answer I wanted to hear.
âWould you give it to Greer?â I prodded, going for an easy button.
He shrugged.
âThen what would you do?â
âIâd use it to end the demon incursion,â he snapped. âIâd end this war once and for all.â
I let out a humph and crossed my arms over my chest. âGood.â
âIs there something youâre not telling me?â
âOh, so now youâre turning my questions back on me?â
âWell?â
âIf Greer had Arondight, what do you think sheâd do with it?â
âYouâre avoiding the question, Purples.â
âIf she had it, do you think sheâd use it to end the war?â I ignored him because there wasnât anything I wasnât telling him. Not really. If I told him I thought he was handsome and that I was developing a stupid crush on him, then heâd use it to taunt me for eternity.
âWhy are you asking me?â He gave me his trademark blank âI know nothingâ expression.
I snorted and glanced away. âMaybe because Iâm trying to understand what kind of person she is.â
âScarlett⊠do you know where Arondight is?â
I laughed and threw my hands into the air in exasperation. âNo, I donât. Bloody hell.â I felt the same anger thatâd driven me to escape the Sanctum raise its ugly head again. âWhy are you always so⊠so surly with me? Am I really that horrible?â
Wilder lowered his head and sighed. âNo, youâre not,â he replied after a moment. âIâm hard on you for a reason, Scarlett. This life isnât easy for people like us.â
I made a face that said âWTFâ. âNaturals? OrâŠâ
âBoth.â He flexed his fingers and curled them into tight fists.
âWilderâŠâ
âSpit it out, Purples.â
âWill you explain it to me now? Why your eyes shine silver like those demons?â
He sighed, letting his head fall back. Then he turned to face me, his eyes soft. It was kind of unsettling, how gentle he looked. Wilder had always been this strong, abrasive arsehole until now. And I simply didnât know how to handle it.
âI possess certain qualities that are inherent to demons, so people assume I was possessed as a child,â he said. âBut I was born this way, and no, my parents werenât demons. They were Naturals. I donât know why Iâm like this. No one does. All I know is that I can do things other Naturals canât, all while being completely⊠Natural.â He lowered his head. âPeople tend to fear things they donât understand. The closer to home they are, the worse it gets.â
âWhat can you do?â I whispered.
âI can see in the dark without the aid of Light,â he replied. âI can anticipate movement before it happens, and my staminaâŠâ
My thighs clenched at the word stamina and I swallowed hard. âThatâs why youâre so good at knocking me on my ass,â I declared.
âNo, itâs because youâre raw as hell, Mary Sue.â
I snorted. âDo you want to know? I mean, why youâre different.â
He shrugged. âI stopped thinking about it a long time ago.â
âJackson was altered by his possession,â I argued. âPerhapsââ
âIt isnât the same,â he interrupted. âMy DNA isnât altered.â
âWhat I was going to say before I was so rudely interrupted was that maybe something Ramona has found out might be able to explain why you can do the things you do. It mightnât be the same, but it might be similar. Donât be so precious.â
Wilder snorted and raked his hand through his hair. âBloody hell.â
I sighed heavily. What a day.
âNo oneâs ever talked to me like that,â he stated.
âLike what?â
âLike Iâm not contagious.â
âNot even Greer?â The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them.
Wilder narrowed his eyes and studied me for a moment, the intensity of his gaze made me tremble. The last thing I wanted to think about was romanceâespecially not with Wilderâbut my gaze dropped to his mouth anyway. Traitor, I internally hissed at my lady parts.
âNot even with her,â he finally said.
âWere youââ
âBriefly.â
I turned away before he could see the colour of my cheeks turn.
âA long time ago,â he added, âbefore she was the protector of the Codex.â
âYou donât need to explain it to me,â I said sharply. âJust a yes wouldâve been fine.â
He grunted, and then rose to his feet, stepping away from the edge of the roof.
âCâmon,â he said, âitâs late. Iâll see you back to your room.â
âI donât need an escort.â
âHumor me, Purples.â
I stood and dusted off my arse. âIâm in trouble, arenât I?â
Wilder nodded. âYouâll be reprimanded.â
âGreat.â
He led me off the roof and back into the Sanctum, closing out the chill of winter behind us. I stewed over the nightâs events all the way downstairs, mystified more about the way Wilder had opened up to me, more than the consequences of having my eyeball licked by a demon. Yeah, I was that weird.
We turned into the hallway where my room was located. It was past midnight, and it was dark and empty. Sometimes the Sanctum gave me the creeps when it was like thisâall dark corners where ghosts lingered.
Wilderâs arm brushed against mine and I tensed, quickening my steps.
âScarlett.â
I turned, gasping when I realised he was right behind me. When had he gotten so close?
I attempted to speak, but the words were stuck in
