“You don’t sign. You don’t get your deposit back.”
“Fine. Give me that.” Angelica snatched the clipboard from the man’s hands. She scribbled her name and handed it back. “There. You better not have damaged my belongings.”
“We didn’t damage anything.”
The second mover returned to the stoop, and then the men climbed into the vehicle. The moving truck rumbled down the narrow alley before turning the corner and disappearing from sight.
Carlita pointed to Angelica’s convertible. “We have one parking spot per tenant. Visitor parking is around the front of the building and on the street.”
“Where is tenant parking?”
Carlita pointed to the other end of the alley. “Down there.”
Angelica’s eyes widened in horror. “You mean there’s no covered parking?”
“No. It’s not assigned parking, either. You take whatever spot is open.”
“I…” Angelica’s mouth snapped shut and then opened again. “Your daughter never mentioned unassigned parking to my handler.”
“Handler?” Carlita asked.
“My agent.”
“I’m sure she forgot.”
“Well.” Angelica tugged on the lapel of her dress. “I would assume then that tenants are given a discount for subpar parking.”
“We don’t offer a discount. Listen.” Carlita was beginning to wonder what Mercedes had gotten them into with their new “tenant.” “If you don’t like the parking situation, there’s still time to back out of the lease.”
Angelica clicked her tongue. “I…just moved in.”
“Then you’ll have to be okay with the parking arrangement.” Carlita stepped inside the building. “I’ll go grab the lease agreement.”
She didn’t wait for the woman to reply as she climbed the steps.
The woman made a grunting noise, her angry heels clicking on the wood floor. The door to the efficiency slammed shut.
Carlita flung open the door to the apartment. “Mercedes!”
Mercedes emerged from her room. “Yeah?”
“I just met our new tenant, Angelica. What in the world did you get us into?”
The end.
