He and Anson liked to share their women, usually hooking up with an undergrad and having some fun. They wouldnât be able to play with Eden and sharing her would be impossible. âYepânow youâre seeing the big picture, Brother,â Anson said.
âDid you know who she was when you wandered into her room to take pictures of her half naked?â Duff asked. He sounded like he was accusing his brother of wrongdoing, and maybe he was. The last thing they needed now was to draw more unwanted attention to either of them. The Gunderson girlâs murder had caused Anson enough problems over the past few months. They needed to get through the rest of their internships and then, theyâd be free to do who and what they choose.
âNo,â Anson admitted. âI saw that her door was open and when I peeked in to find her half naked, I nearly swallowed my tongue. I couldnât help myselfâI started taking her picture and thatâs when she woke up. I didnât know who she was until she told me her name.â
âYou know better than to be anywhere near that room, right? Hellâyou took a chance just by being in that building. If father found out that you were taking half-naked pictures of a Graystone, heâd have both of our balls.â His father hated Theodore Graystone. They were at the academy at the same time and their rivalry was what legends were made ofâliterally. They hated each other and from that time on, Graystones and Kirkpatrickâs were enemies.
âI donât see why your balls would be involved,â Anson grumbled.
âBecause Iâm the one who makes bad decisions, Brother. Iâm the one who would spend all my spare time pursuing the sexy witch and when I wore her down, Iâd convince her to let us share her. That would end with father having both our balls. If youâre the one going off half-cocked, acting completely reckless, whoâs going to be the level headed twin? Who will keep us in check and make sure that we donât do something stupidâlike share Eden Graystone?â Duff asked.
Anson sighed, âI told you before, Duff, I wasnât going to do anything stupid. Sure, sheâs hot,â Anson breathed.
âAhâso, you admit that sheâs hot then?â Duff asked. He was fishing, although he had no idea what for. Getting Anson to agree that he found the witch to be hot wasnât going to get them any closer to making her theirs. His brotherâs admission wouldnât magically change her name or the fact that she was off limits.
âSo what?â his brother asked. âWhat does it matter if sheâs the most beautiful woman Iâve ever seen in my life? Doesnât change a thing that I want Eden Graystone to be ours, but she canât be. Sheâs still off limits to both of us.â Anson wasnât watching where he was walking and he walked right into Eden, leaving her plastered against his body, her arms around him.
âShit,â Duff grumbled. âThis is not a good sign, Brother,â he whispered to Anson.
âIâm so sorry,â Eden stuttered. âI wasnât looking where I was going because I was studying this stupid map, trying to find the dining hall.â She looked up and when she recognized Anson and Duff, she gasped and quickly extricated herself from his brother.
âNo, it was completely my fault,â Anson stammered. âI should have been paying attention and not talking aboutââ he didnât finish his thought because heâd have to admit that he was droning on about how hot Eden was. Duff smirked at him and Anson looked at him like he wanted to tell him to fuck off.
âYou were talking about what?â she asked.
âOhânothing. We were going to the dining hall too and we were just wondering what they are serving tonight,â Duff covered for Anson. âWould you liked to join us? We can show you around so you donât have to rely on that stupid map and end up injuring yourself.â Anson groaned and rolled his eyes at his brother.
âI thought we decided that âdinnerâ was a bad idea?â Anson whispered. He used air quotes around the word, âdinnerâ as if sending his brother a clue to his cryptic code.
âYeahâwell, I told you that I liked, âdinnerâ and I think that eating, âdinnerâ is a good idea,â Duff countered, using air quotes just as his brother had. Eden looked between the two of them as if they had both lost their minds.
âYou two donât eat dinner?â she asked. âIs it something youâre opposed to or are you just not hungry tonight?â
âOh, weâre hungry,â Duff insisted. âBut weâre not sure if âdinnerâ is a good idea.â
âIâm missing the point of why you are both using air quotes,â she said. âI donât think that youâre using them correctly.â Duff nearly doubled over laughing and Anson shot him a look.
âHow about it, Edenâwould you like to have dinner with us?â Duff asked.
âAs long as dinner doesnât go against your beliefs or anything, sure,â she said. âIâd love to have someone to eat with. I donât know anyone else hereâwell, except you both.â
âThen itâs a date,â Duff said. He smiled over at his brother and Anson rolled his eyes.
âItâs not a date,â Anson corrected. âItâs three new friends having dinner.â Duff sometimes wished he could read peopleâs thoughts as his brother could. He didnât get any special gifts other than his ability to communicate with his twin telepathically, and he really didnât consider that to be a âgiftâ.
Coward, Duff thought.
Realist, Anson thought back. Iâm wondering if she knows about our families feud. She doesnât seem to hate us or anything.
Why would she? Iâm charming as hell, Duff thought. Anson barked out his laugh and Eden looked at him as if he lost his mind.
âYou two are
